Washington Nationals: Brian Bruney Loses Arbitration Battle To Nats.
• Happy Birthday, Brian Bruney.
• According to an AP report out of St. Petersburgh, Florida, which is posted at ESPN.com under the title, "Brian Bruney loses in arbitration", the Washington Nationals prevailed in the first of two arbitration battles they have this winter, winning their case against reliever Brian Bruney, who was awarded a $1.5 million dollar deal for 2010, which is a $250,000 dollar raise over the $1.25 million the Yankees paid the 28-year-old pitcher last year, but $350,000 less than Bruney was asking for from the Nationals.
• The Nationals have one more case to resolve this winter, with reliever Sean Burnett, 27, who was acquired along with DC CF Nyjer Morgan from the Pittsburgh Pirates in a 6/30/10 trade that sent right-handed pitcher Joel Hanrahan and outfielder Lastings Milledge to the Bucs. In 33 games and 25.1 IP, after arriving in DC (and surrendering a HR to the first batter he faced) Burnett was (1-1) with a 3.20 ERA (131 ERA+), and a 1.07 WHIP with Washington. On the year in 2009, Burnett walked 28 (4.4 BB/9) and struck out 43 (6.7 K/9) with a 1.11 WHIP in 71 games and 57.2 IP. Burnett is asking for a raise to $925,000 this year, with the Nationals offering the late-inning-left-hander a raise to $775,000 from the 1-year/$408,500 dollar deal he signed with Pittsburgh last March.

Dang, I left him off when I reposted the list...
I’ll put him back in for round three…Thanks for noticing, I think he’s got a shot at starting though he’s definitely in the “if healthy” category…

No love for alternate mammalian species, either....
Man, I’m taking a lot of heat around here for that….

I'm all for #3 being part of the starting rotation!
Has enough Rob Dibble edge to scare the batters, won’t nibble around the edges, and will throw a beanball upon occasion.
#3's secret is his ability to stare down a batter.........

…and then freeze them with the heat…

The eye black really makes his eyes pop. Yikes.
Like a furry Andy Petite hiding behind his glove. (and cheating with PEDs, nobody gets a pass.)
Put a cap on #3 with sweat pouring off the brim and I'd swear it was Scott Olsen...

Now that you mention it, an uncanny resemblance...

I heard he would soak his cap in Florida, so it was cold water dripping off...
Don’t know if it’s true but it’s much less gross than thinking about Olsen sweating that much…

That's a reassuring explanation...

he wont be doing anything for us. i really like burnett any chance he make the bullpen coming out of ST?
No doubt in my mind Burnett's a part of the bullpen...
Though in recent conversation with Pirates fans I noticed they didn’t share the high opinion DC fans seem to have…

Poor old Debi...
wonder if she learned how to look into the camera or take her arm off her hip this winter? maybe some serious ST for her as well?
Heh.
A little more on Wang...
…according to J.P. Morosi of Fox Sports, the Reds and Indians offered Wang a major-league contract, while the Dodgers and Rays showed some interest but never made a major-league offer (presumably if the Dodgers had, Wang would have gone there because of the Torre/Mattingly connection. Good to know the Nats were not the only team to make an offer as some had suspected.)
Even though it was the Reds and Tribe, it's good that the Nats were chosen over other teams...
Please regain all that you lost, Mr. Wang…

How much will air time will the Nationals have...
when They are abou to draft Bryce Harper and at the same time setting Strasburg’s date for his professional debut? They will be the most popular team in all of sports on ESPN for about two weeks. Something cool to think about.
Orakpo!!! Russel Okung next year!
I was amazed ESPN put Strasburg's first Florida Instructional League start on tv...
I’ve NEVER seen a Florida Inst. League game…
I think the hype extends beyond the District for sure…

starting pitching polls
I just found this, and read the suggested article as well. It refered to a poll for number 3 starter. This makes more sense to me since most aggree other than 1 & 2, there are no locks. I’d like to see the results without stammen and detwiler locked as #3 & #4. All of those listed I would expect have as good a chance at making the rotation as these two.
