Washington Nationals: Stephen Strasburg Starts Spring With 5.0 Scoreless.

A two-out walk to Colby Rasmus followed by a 2-2 curve to Cardinals' third baseman David Freese, and Stephen Strasburg gets a swinging strike three to end the top of the first inning of today's game between St. Louis' Cards and Strasburg's Washington Nationals. A leadoff single by Nick Stavinoha started the second, but Strasburg dropped an 0-2 curve on Cards' catcher Yadier Molina, (who let the Umpire know he'd be looking for the same call), and got a DP grounder from St. Louis' outfielder Joe Mather to end his second scoreless inning. Cards' SS Tyler Greene popped a full-count pitch up to Adam Dunn, Skip Schumaker sent a weak grounder out to second, and FLop, former Nats' infielder Felipe Lopez rolled the third out to third baseman Ryan Zimmerman, whose throw to first ended Strasburg's third (3.0) scoreless on the day and fifth scoreless IP on the Spring...

• Strasburg's Line: 3.0 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 2 K's, 6/1 GO/FO, 49 pitches, 28 strikes (pitch count acc to @washingnats)

Man

I forgot Strasburg was pitching today! Not a big fan of the Strikes:Balls ratio, but I am a big fan of the ground out to fly out ratio.

Word is MLB Audio was sketchy all day...(worked for me)...

So you might have avoided frustration…even if radio worked, rest of the game would have frustrated to no end…

Strasburg’s heat down in the zone and it’s going to be mad ground balls all season…Still wild according to one Twitterer who was in the park…Nerves still? Threw more first pitch strikes this time at least…7 of 11 batters acc to Kilgore at the WaPost…

You know it's bad...

when Tyler Clippard’s pitching made Livan Hernandez look decent and Strasburg look like an ace rather than a rookie phenom. Okay, an exaggeration, but not much of one.

I'm worried, even if the Nationals aren't...

Im concerned

More at the bullpen than anything else. Little concerned that it will sabotage any decent start to the year and drop heads. Rizzo needs to be sure that the guys in there start the season off well…otherwise we’re in bigger trouble that Mamba thinks.

i asked the question earlier...

What if Clippard and Burnett return to pre-Nats stats? talk about concern!

And Bruney, Capps, etc dont work out… yep…not good at this stage. Although im hoping they start to improve before the season.

I'm worried too

11 walks issued today. What up with that?

and all from the usual suspects

Clip is playing himself into AAA

and

he’s making me think about AA at the same time.

It's his job to lose

He’ll be in the majors when the season starts.

Isn’t what he needs to be doing.

Why isn't Strasburg hitting triple digits?

What happened to the guy who threw 98-103?

by natsfan39 on Mar 14, 2010 7:04 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

College and and AFL stadium guns not quite as accurate...or working up arm strength? I'm sure we would know if he hit triple-digits though and no one's said so yet...

98mph is still pretty fast of course, but I know what you’re saying…

he said after the game...

that he has been pitching instead of throwing. he’s got it, he’s just reigning it in.

Then all of a sudden the control's an issue? Interesting...

Not saying there’s a direct connection, but people have remarked on the absence if his ballyhooed control…

He's no Clippard.

So far his control is ok. But I guess this is a reason they should start him in AA – to get a feel for where he needs to be?

And still he's clearly the best pitcher they have...

I don’t think it’s even close so far…

Id expect some of the other starters to kick on a bit as ST goes

Lannan and Marquis will get better (they always have). But no doubt – at this stage, id be tempted to make Stras the 5th starter and have him in there late April.

The other thing...

Is that I wonder what the bullpen troubles means for Bally, Stammen, and Bergy… I suspect some of those guys might end up being relivers if Clip, etc continue to struggle.

I hope Prefontaine makes the Opening Day roster...I'm always pulling for old Expos...

I'm real interested in Bergmann's destiny...I'm definitely pulling for him...

Stammen and Martin are the big ?’s for me, in terms of their doing exceeding expectations again…

by Patrick Reddington on Mar 14, 2010 8:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Yea dont know – just hoping we’re not sticking with guys with reputation only. Martin and Stammen look ok – we need one or both to step up this year.

I read that Rizzo is almost sold on Desmond making SS…and money of Guzman wont be a factor. Hope the kid knocks off bunions and we dump Guz like a Modonna an ex-husband.

How can you say no to Desmond...Keep it up, kid...

Who wants a shortstop? Maybe that’s what The RZO’s working on…eat some cash, since the payroll isn’t all that high, write it off as cleaning up the old regime’s obligations and put a package together with some of the other talent without a defined role here for some young pitching…it might work…What up, Cleveland?

Vivian Jaffe: "Have you ever transcended space and time?"
Albert Markovski: "Yes. No. Uh, time, not space... No, I don't know what you're talking about."

by Patrick Reddington on Mar 14, 2010 8:32 PM EDT up reply actions

I dont have much doubt that Rizzo is looking to shop Guz around like a Walmart special. Even if the team ate the most of the $8m, I cant see Guz being a sought after type A or B free agent to get any compensation. Best to move him for something now and not hold up Desmond. Maybe we could get a relief pitcher who threw strikes for him?

"I love, love, love John Lackey." -- Graysnail.

by Mezza on Mar 14, 2010 8:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Then just "pray" or hope real hard that Desmond doesn't falter...

by Patrick Reddington on Mar 14, 2010 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Even if he does – you’ve got to see what he can do at some stage. At least then you can go into the 2010 offseason with a need to get a starting SS.

Not to be a buzz-kill, but...

Unless the Nats plan on having Strasburg pitch everyday, the season looks pretty bleak. 0-10? There’s no excuse for this. Especially not in spring training.

This season I will expect the worst but I will be prepared for 'worser'.

by LOUtheMETandNATSfan on Mar 14, 2010 8:16 PM EDT reply actions

It’s mainly been the bullpen again too. Some of the silly errors also appear to be creeping back into the side… Villone tried for the 1-2-3 double play and threw it away for 2 runs…

"I love, love, love John Lackey." -- Graysnail.

The team would disagree with paying any attention to the record thus far...

More on that shortly…
