Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Washington Nationals: Split-Game Thread - vs St. Louis Cardinals, vs Florida Marlins.

The Washington Nationals at St. Louis Cardinals game is listed as being available on MLB Gameday Audio this afternoon. The Nats throw John Lannan against the Cards in St. Louis' Spring home, Roger Dean Stadium, the original Spring home of the Montreal Expos, while Craig Stammen will face the visiting Florida Marlins in the Nats' current home, Space Coast Stadium. The Cardinals throw right-hander Kyle Lohse against Washington, the Marlins go with righty Rick VandenHurkMLB.com's Bill Ladson wrote yesterday, in a post game article entitled, "Mock's control again spotless for Nats", that Jim Riggleman will be managing the traveling team while Bench Coach John McClaren stays home to handle the managing duties in Viera. Here's Riggleman's squad, again, according to Mr. Ladson:

  1. Roger Bernadina - RF
  2. Ian Desmond - SS
  3. Adam Kennedy - 2B
  4. Josh Willingham - LF
  5. Chris Duncan - 1B
  6. Ivan Rodriguez - C
  7. Josh Whitesell - DH
  8. Justin Maxwell - CF
  9. Eric Bruntlett - 3B
  10. John Lannan - SP
Craig Stammen make his second start of the Spring as he recovers from elbow surgery. Opening Day lefty John Lannan will be making his second start as well, having been rained out of his last scheduled appearance. Lannan allowed 2 hits and 2 ER, hit one and walked one batter and recorded 2 K's in 2.0 IP in his first outing of the Spring against the NY Mets. Stammen took the loss in his return to the mound against Atlanta back on March 5th. The 26-year-old right-hander, who might be headed for a bullpen role with the twenty-ten Nats, gave up a walk, 4 hits and 3 ER in 1.1 IP.

Hmmm...I assume that...

Kennedy and Bruntlett are not both starting at second with no one at third…I know the Nats are 0-11 but hopefully they are not that pitiful

Very common south of the equator where the ball spins in the opposite direction.

Desmond has considerably more range and a much more powerful arm than Guz

Guzman’s range at short is woefully inadequate. On top of that, he has a lifetime .306 OBP, which is below replacement level, incredibly so for a leadoff hitter.

His batting average masks the fact he brings nothing else to the plate, today’s home run not withstanding. He no longer has the foot speed to steal bases like he did while he was younger and, on top of everything else, is moody.

Thanks a ton~

I didn’t know he was moody. I did know he was one of the names I remembered from when the team first moved here – not that that means I want him to play, just to the kind of casual fan until now, he was recognizable. Shame to hear he’s moody, though I do remember he had a pretty sizable contract.

I should have saved my old signature. Oh well!

by Whiter Mage on Mar 16, 2010 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions

forgot to mention the contract.

he’s owed $8M this year thanks to Jim Bowden, so he’s basically untradable. Not that there are many takers for a poor fielding, low OBP SS.

3:34 p.m. — Stop the presses! Call the neighbors! Wake the kids! The Nats win! Thuuuuuuuuu Nats win! Put a curly W in the books! Bang-zoom go the fireworks! Holy cow! We had ‘em all the way! Ain’t the beer cold! Break out the Crayolas and color me tickled pink! Final score: Nationals 12, Marlins 3. (And if the other guys can hold onto a 4-2 lead in the ninth, Washington will go from 0-11 to 2-11 in a span of minutes!)

And a John Sterling victory call!!!

Relax, all right? Don't try to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

Plus, I refuse to celebrate wins if the games don't count...

Yes, bitter.

Vivian Jaffe: "Have you ever transcended space and time?"
Albert Markovski: "Yes. No. Uh, time, not space... No, I don't know what you're talking about."

Can someone tell the Nationals to never....NEVER...do a Nationals Nation marketing campaign...

Cause Cardinal Nation is plenty dumb enough….

Who’s going to close it out for win no.2?

Jesse English?

Vivian Jaffe: "Have you ever transcended space and time?"
Albert Markovski: "Yes. No. Uh, time, not space... No, I don't know what you're talking about."

We don't have a nation...

We’re the Nats. We only got a town.

Coming in 2012 State of the Nation(als)...

Vivian Jaffe: "Have you ever transcended space and time?"
Albert Markovski: "Yes. No. Uh, time, not space... No, I don't know what you're talking about."

Wow

Makes me want to run out and buy tickets for the April 7th Magnet Schedule/Car Magnet give away day (first 20,000 fans)

Zow!!!! TWO...2...Curly W's in one day?

Our long Nationals’ nightmare is over for “games that don’t count.”

I still like Curly W’s.
Sorry to hear the Big Walky’s back is in spasms. Shot of cortisone outta fix him right up for the next game that doesn’t matter.

Hip Hip Hooray!

2009
Nats fan to usher: "Hey isn’t it a bit early for the Nationals to erect a statue of Manny Acta?"
Usher: "Uh sir, that’s not a statue, that actually is Manny Acta."

think Selig will take pity on them....

and let them play split squad days during the regular season?

Amazing what 2 wins in games that don’t count can do. Yesterday I wanted to get a refund on my MLB.TV subscription, tonight I’m hoping for 75-80 wins this season.
