Washington Nationals vs Houston Astros: Spring Training GameThread.

• Though MLB Network correspondent Trenni Kusnierek clearly stated during last night's "30 Clubs in 30 Days" Washington Nationals' profile that DC GM Mike Rizzo, "...has said that he will not start Strasburg in the majors in April," and in spite of the fact that former DC GM Jim Bowden tweeted yesterday that, "M. Rizzo just told me on XM 175 that he is leaning on sending Strasburg to minor leagues," to, "...work on stretch, bat & time to plate," according to MLB.com's Bill Ladson's article entitled, "No decision on Strasburg regarding minors", which was published before the MLB program aired and after the DC GM's interview on Sirius/XM, Mr. Rizzo checked in via text to tell the MLB.com writer that although, "'In all probability, Stephen would benefit from going to the Minor Leagues...the official decision has not been made.'"

• You can ask Strasburg where he thinks he'll start in today's MLB.com Chat with the Nationals' '09 no.1 overall pick, which will take place at 12:30 pm EST this afternoon before the game starts.

• Game Notes and DC Starting Lineup After The JUMP...

• Game Time: 1:05 pm EST from Kissimmee. Jason Marquis vs Wandy Rodriguez. MLB Gameday Audio has the Houston feed. Who's Listening to the Nationals?

Star-divide

• DC Starting Lineup (as of 8:27 am 3/17 acc to @NatsTownNews):

  1. Willy Taveras - RF
  2. Cristian Guzman - SS
  3. Justin Maxwell - CF
  4. Adam Dunn - 1B
  5. Josh Willingham - LF
  6. Danny Espinosa - 2B
  7. Eric Bruntlett - 3B
  8. Wil Nieves - C
  9. Jason Marquis - SP

• Barring any unforseen developments this Spring, today's starter Jason Marquis will be part of the Nationals' twenty-ten starting rotation. The 31-year-old right-hander allowed 3 hits, 3 walks, 1 HR and 5 ER overall in 2.0 IP of his only competitive outing this Spring. The veteran starter's second start was washed out, though he pitched a simulated game instead. Marquis makes his second start this afternoon against the Houston Astros in Kissimmee, Florida's Osceola County Stadium, where the Nationals will face 'Stros left-hander Wandy Rodriguez.

• The Nationals will be looking for their third-straight win after yesterday's split-squad sweep of the Marlins and Cardinals. 2-11 so far this Spring, the Nationals got 3 RBI's from Pudge Rodriguez in Washington's 4-2 win over St. Louis, and 4 HR's from Kevin Mench, Cristian Guzman, Ryan Zimmerman and Willie Harris in their 12-3 drubbing of the Marlins. The bad news out of yesterday's games? Nyjer Morgan went down with a hamstring issue that will keep the Nats' center fielder on the sidelines for now, while Adam Dunn suffered back spasms that forced him to remove himself from the game. Dunn reportedly thinks he'll be fine for today's game...Will Cristian Guzman start at short as rumored? When will Nyjer Morgan be back?

Game getting under way for those not searching for answers to the Dukes' move...

Vivian Jaffe: "Have you ever transcended space and time?"

Who is "krickeys"?

And why did they give Strasburg so many of his questions? Was a little disappointed that the chat was so fluff-oriented, but I guess that’s to be expected. I submitted a ton of pitching questions, but none got through.

I sent two of my own...

But much better to know his movie and music preferences I guess

Avatar and Bull Durham are both good movies,

But I was hoping to learn something new. The stat question was interesting, even if he gave an old school answer. I’m guessing Storen, for example, might have had a different answer.

I haven't read whole transcript, but it seemed like they were taking the easy ones...

Storen’s a great interview…

I just don’t know why people go for the personal questions.

Movies, what’s on his iPod? Not interested really…

I didn't read the piece,

but I would have liked him much more if Strasburg had said his favorite movie was “A Touch of Evil”.
Not only because it’s a great movie, but that’s what I’m hoping he’s going to be for NL hitters.

Astros bat around, add another run off Marquis...5-0 Astros.

Impossible to keep up, will update below when the box scores catch up with this…

Short story: Marquis just got shelled.

Will he be starting? How many innings?

These are unanswered questions for the Strasburg-obsessed. I noticed nationals.com only said he’d be pitching. Might Livan start and Strasburg follow? Would they get 4 innings each? Or will only Strasburg pitch?

Last I checked, it looked like the game will in fact be on mlb.tv, but I’d recommend checking again on Friday before the game.

So what did Riggleman see to change his opinion from the beginning of camp that Dukes was ready:

Today he says, acc. to Yahoo!Sports.com’s Tim Brown:

“Another Nats reporter, Mark Zuckerman, talked to manager Jim Riggleman, who said Dukes just isn’t good enough to be an everyday right fielder in the majors. Maybe he’s the classic “4-A” player."

Anyone who has to read this will again, cause I’m going to pull the Riggleman quotes for an article later…

Vivian Jaffe: "Have you ever transcended space and time?"
Albert Markovski: "Yes. No. Uh, time, not space... No, I don't know what you're talking about."

if Jim Rigglemen knows what Dukes' career BB% is

ill put his first born through college

by martins on Mar 17, 2010 2:46 PM EDT reply actions

sorry guys this fires me up

Managers know next to nothing about players aside from anecdotally seeing them on the field. The fact that Jim Rigglemen thinks he’s qualified to say who or who isn’t qualified to play baseball absed on what he sees, or remembers from last season is incredibly stupid.

I have now become a lifelong dukes fan. My hope is that he succeeds and shoves it in the face of this baseball illiterate
