Nationals News: Goodbye Dukes Edition

I must admit that I'm still a little surprised over the Dukes decision, but Jim Riggleman described him as an AAAA player, just not quite ready to produce in the majors. I'm looking forward to seeing where he ends up, and how that assessment bears out.

Nationals News

If you missed the Stephen Strasburg online chat yesterday, here is a transcript.

The Nats are still maintaining that the Elijah Dukes decision was solely about baseball.

Adam Dunn didn't play yesterday as a result of his back spasms, but hopes to play on Friday against the Cardinals.

As the Nats rotation gets closer and closer to finalized, it's going to be very different in 2011 and 2012.

Star-divide

Though there were rumors yesterday, it turns out that the Mets are not interested in Cristian Guzman.

Mark Zuckerman has a good piece on the decision to release Dukes.

Jason Marquis had a bad start yesterday, raising his ERA to 21.94. The team's era is 7.92.

Does the Kilgore's Strasburg Post get its own thread?

He gives a great analysis and shows why us Nationals fans should root for Strasburg to be in the minors until June 1. The team can do a lot with those savings even if 18Million is optimistic.

June 4-6 looks perfect and would start Strasburg with some easy teams and three off days in three weeks. CIN, PIT, DET, KC

I hope its a Friday night debut but I may just get tickets for three already

Actually, Dave Shenin wrote that post

In an interesting comparison, the same numbers would apply to the other top prospect this year, the Braves’ Jason Heyward. But the team will be bringing him up to the majors at the beginning of the year.

The difference? The Braves might make the playoffs and having Heyward up from the start might determine whether the Braves make it.

Luckily, having Heyward up from the starts helps the Nats bring up Strasburg earlier due to that 17% rule.

prob a bit different with Heyward

you’d also want to limit a pitchers innings…whereas with Heyward its not as critical to rest him up.

I like that the Nats finally got to refute something the NTAC said on his radio show. I bet Bowden is now officially on the Nats’ list of enemies.

Guzman never made sense for New York.

They might as well give the job to Ruben Tejada if they’re looking at Alex Cora and Guzman..

At $8M Guzman doesn't make sense for anyone....

…Especially when all the FA SS’s signed for $3-4 this year….

could be worse...

we could have paid Cubs money for Soriano…good piece in the Post on that.

Hey, I wasn't as mad about Soriano leaving as I was about Dukes yesterday...

I’m like totally over that now. Who’s playing RF again?

I am happy as our clubhouse will improve because of it

though our talent on the whole is still quite subpar as he was very talented

Someone had better really step up in right...I'm looking at you, Maxwell.

Seems to me like Maxwell has the skills to be a major league player but he’s too worried about how he looks on the field…just like Lastings Milledge was. He needs to get over his vanity and play hardnosed baseball.

J-Max seems soft. Maybe growing up with money has softened him up and he doesn’t have the fight in him that’s necessary to always be improving. That’s not a blanket statement by me but I’m trying to come up with logical reasons for his lack of improvement.

The mourning period is over

The Nationals won’t break .500 this year; they will probably struggle for 75 wins.

The offseason was stifled by half-measures and lousy bottom-feeder signings. So many people argued that signing retreads, has-beens, and never-wases to minor league contracts couldn’t hurt, but we now see that none of these schmoes are going to help any, either. So that’s money and time wasted panning for gold in the storm sewer.

The Nats are going to have to go bold next year if they want to make a run of it. They will have a nice starting rotation, but they will need some offense — especially in the outfield, some bullpen help, and a real second baseman. Clearly, they have the resources. Will they do it?
