St. Louis Cardinals vs Washington Nationals: Stephen Strasburg GameThread.

76 pitches, 43 strikes, two starts and 5.0 innings into his first Spring Training with the Washington Nationals after having been selected with the no.1 overall pick in the '09 Draft out of San Diego State University, Stephen Strasburg is being given one more chance tonight to convince the Nats' Brass that they can't afford to wait until the beginning of June to insert the right-handed flame-throwing future ace into the Nationals' rotation. Strasburg's allowed 4 hits and 1 walk while recording 4 K's thus far, and tonight the 21-year-old's scheduled for a four-inning outing against the visiting St. Louis Cardinals, who bring a decidedly B-lineup to Viera, Florida's Space Coast Stadium, where the Nats and Cards game will get underway at 7:05 pm EST...(What's up, Pujols?) The Nationals' Lineup?

DC Starting Lineup: (AFTER THE JUMP):

Star-divide

DC Starting Lineup:

  1. Thrillie Harris - RF (hmmm)
  2. Adam Kennedy - 2B (New "Two-Spot"?)
  3. Ryan Zimmerman - 3B (Word.)
  4. Adam Dunn - 1B (Back...alright?)
  5. Pudge Rodriguez - C (Was once "Pudgy")
  6. Ian Desmond - SS (Sorry, Guz!)
  7. Justin (J-Max) Maxwell - CF (For now, RF later?)
  8. Willy Taveras - LF (Please, no!)
  9. Stephen Strasburg - SP (Who's this kid?)
Game Time 7:05 pm EST. Charlie and Dave got this one on WFED. You'll need MLB.com Gameday Audio to hear this one outside of the DC area...And that's the only place to hear it. ...As I mentioned, Strasburg's scheduled for 4.0 IP, I'll put up a quick post on how Stras throws after his day's done if anyone can't listen and wants to know asap, otherwise join in on the GameThread, and see if anyone else is listening along...Who's Listening To Strasburg...uh and the rest of the Nationals as they take on the Cards???

Zimmermann was going to be shutdown in Sept. I think its 150 IP with a lot of 5 Inning starts – especially in the Minors. We’ll know more in a few weeks. These HR’s only help the RZO make the right choice.

Boswell is nuts at 3/40 – I hope.

by souldrummer on Mar 19, 2010 7:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah walk or trade

we won’t get anything at the end of the season because we can’t offer him arbitration. He could make 15M after his 12M this year. Only way to get something is to trade him. I’d rather have him walk for nothing than resign for 2/20. That money could do a lot on the FA market.

Think what you could get for 10M a year this year? Garland and ODog on 1 year deals each? Felipe Lopez and Piniero for 2 years? A lot more than Dunn

by HobbsNY9 on Mar 19, 2010 7:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Much of this is how Dunn’s defense is trending as these contract talks proceed. If he plays two-three months of decent defense at first he’s more valuable.

BBs are the problem

Supposedly we don’t have a problem with young pitchers giving up solo shots if they are not BBing people or falling behind. He pounded the zone, utilized a repertoire of pitches, and showed he can dominate AAA hitters.

I’d like to get an opinion from you baseball-experts, whats the overall impression from Strasburg 4 innings tonight and his 3 outings so far in spring training?

Not that we're experts, but I think the consensus is roughly, "we likey."

Season with “ST doesn’t mean anything,” “not enough IP to say for sure,” etc, to taste.

My not-so-humble opinion...He could pitch in the majors right now...

Might struggle like he did in the first, but he’d be the best pitcher on the team if he started the year in DC, but there’s no reason to do so, especially when the rules are such that by holding him out and letting him work his way up adds a year on the back end of his time in DC…it just doesn’t make sense to start him in DC…August with Zimmermann possibly back and Stras and Wang, could be a lot of fun…

August… That’s quite a long time. When did the Nationals have their last winning month?

by Slaentbjorn on Mar 19, 2010 8:37 PM EDT up reply actions

No, sorry, they just have to hold Stras out until late May/June...

The rumors today had Zimmermann possibly back by August when all three of the pitchers mentioned could be available…

by Patrick Reddington on Mar 19, 2010 8:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Zimmermann's not going to be a starter in August, though

He’ll be relieving first in short outings I’ve got to believe. Maybe he gets a few starts in September, but he’s not going to be full strength when he comes back even. But the Strasburg Zimmermann Lannan Wang Marquis rotation would be quite satisfactory if we can get a return on our Sean Hill/John Patterson karma.

Listened to the first 3.5 innings on the patio...

Beautiful evening with the radio. Charlie and Dave are much better than the St Louis guys they had on last time.

Nice outing, but he probably had to be perfect against these AAA guys to get any of the management to have second thoughts. Loved the Ks though.

Fwiw, 2K/inning was about what he did against college kids.

Control is control, though. He had control, sounded overpowering, and was unrattled by the HRs. If it’s merit, let him start in the majors. It’s merit and money, though so see you in June.

Cool.

Did the data include assists, by any chance? Cause if Zimmerman fields the ball and throws to Dunn, credit for the out would be given to Dunn, right?

I tried to do the numbers on BR but couldn’t find a tool that’d split out fielding numbers for a position player by who was pitching. Do they have a place where you can download all the data so you can query it with another program?

by cassander on Mar 19, 2010 8:58 PM EDT up reply actions

You can do it if you have a subscription...

…it’s really tedious, though. Basically, you have to cut/paste a list of every PA for each team, one by one. Took about an hour the last time I did it. I used the play index for pitching events, searching on non-SO outs to the 3B (which I assume was anything hit to 3B that result in an out).

Although...

…that was just by pitcher and position making the out—Zimmy had 90% of playing time at 3B, so that was a safe assumption to make. If I wanted to do it right, I’d have to bounce the PA data off of a database of defensive lineups by game and inning, which I don’t have—the PA data lists what positions were involved, but not the players.
