Washington Nationals: Talking Stephen Strasburg.
Last week it was the uncomfortable attempts at humor in Jim Bowden's GM's Corner video at FOXSports.com that were the topic of conversation, this week it's Stephen Strasburg on everyone's minds. The former DC GM has the current Nationals' general manager Mike Rizzo on his show to talk about Washington's '09 no.1 overall pick and provide a scouting report for the 21-year-old right-hander:
Mike Rizzo: "Strasburg is the prototypical power pitcher. He has a power delivery, utilizes his lower half, and as you've seen him in the past, Jim, from the waist down, he's built like a horse. He's got the lower body of the Nolan Ryan's of the world, and he really utilizes his lower half to generate arm-speed and that's where he gets that terrific velocity from. In college, he was an 80 fastball velocity guy, but what separated him from just about every other college pitcher that I've ever seen, is he compliments the 80 velocity with plus plus command of a fastball and fastball command is really the thing that separates a 20-year-old kid at the time from a lot of his peer group. You know, he had power stuff with command, he's got a wipe-out curve ball he's got a plus slider..."
Future-Hall-of-Fame catcher Pudge Rodriguez made the same Nolan Ryan comparisons after catching Strasburg during an early Spring Training bullpen session, when he and Nationals' Pitching Coach Steve McCatty discussed the young starter in front of Washington Post writer Thomas Boswell who quoted the exchange in an article entitled, "Nats' Rodriguez terms Strasburg 'amazing'":
"'Is his stuff like [Justin] Verlander?' asked McCatty, knowing Rodríguez caught the A.L. strikeout leader in Detroit.
"No," said Rodríguez. "It's like Nolan [Ryan]."
Fans of the Washington Nationals will get a chance to watch Stephen Strasburg for themselves a week from today when he makes his first start of the Spring against the Detroit Tigers in a game that will be broadcast live on MASN and MASN HD. Is there any way Stephen Strasburg can live up to the hype? Baseball Prospectus' writer Kevin Goldstein thinks Strasburg's, who's ranked no.1 overall in the organization, of course, "...lived up to every expectation before signing a record deal as the top pick," but if there's one flaw, Mr. Goldstein writes, in his article this past weekend entitled, "Future Shock: Nationals Top 11 Prospects", it's that, "There are some minor makeup concerns, as he has seemed overwhelmed at times, if not downright uncomfortable with the media spotlight that his talent has generated." Strasburg's presence in the Arizona Fall League drew attention that few before him have generated. Every pitch he's thrown this Spring has been painstakingly detailed by a number of media outlets. Now, his first start of the Spring will be televised...
Is the hype too much for the young pitcher? Should the press allow him to develop like any other pitcher in camp with the Nationals? Is Strasburg getting overexposed? Is there any way you're going to miss Strasburg's first start of the Spring?

"The dropsy" heh...
Strasburg’s approval ratings are very high after he dominated the Nats’ bench players…

Let's get Dunn on that cure for the dropsy protocol
because apparently taking ground balls is useless for a guy his age.
In Rizzo We Trust!
(unless he disagrees with the King James Bible, in which case he will be thrown in the Anacostia to see if he drowns and if he doesn’t he gets burned at the stake in center field!)

Nats fan to usher: "Hey isn’t it a bit early for the Nationals to erect a statue of Manny Acta?"
Usher: "Uh sir, that’s not a statue, that actually is Manny Acta."
Not useless, also not likely to turn Dunn into a GG first baseman...
I’m still running Dunn’s career stats to decide if I can accept the claim in the Dunn post about him being Hall of Fame-bound…Strasburg’s a shoo-in…
How do you spell shoo in shoo-in? shoe-in?

I can't believe Rizzo got Strasburg's repetoire wrong...
Rizzo said: “You know, he had power stuff with command, he’s got a wipe-out curve ball he’s got a plus slider…”
Um, no. Strasburg has one breaking ball which he grips like a slider and has the movement of a curve ball. It’s been called a slider, a curve ball, or a slurve, but it’s just one pitch. It’s in the low to mid 80s. Strasburg has confirmed this just a few weeks ago. Analyzing the pitch f/x from the AFL, it’s evident as well. He also has a change-up, a 4-seam fastball, and a 2-seam fastball, none of which could be accurately termed a slider.
Did Rizzo just misspeak here or does he really not know what pitches Strasburg throws? I’ve seen journalists get this wrong before (which is why Strasburg corrected it recently), but the GM? He has a background in scouting, so I’ll just assume it was a misstatement.
Pitches
Hey Cassander, can you recommend a link that shows hand/finger position and movement of the ball for different pitches?
This season I will expect the worst but I will be prepared for 'worser'.

Pitch Types
Ed’s link should cover the grips. In the last few weeks, there was an article that quoted someone as saying Strasburg uses a circle change grip even though his changeup seems to have a split-fingered-like movement. He’s mentioned himself he grips his breaking ball like a slider.
As for the actual movement of the pitches, rather than the grips, there are a few good primers that deal with this, especially from the point of view of pitch f/x data, which I like because it allows numerical analysis of the pitches rather than subjective judgment. I’d link you to some graphs of the pitch f/x data from the two or three AFL starts that were captured last year, but alas, the AFL tool on brooksbaseball seems to be down right now. But I know from looking at that data last fall that a change-up and slurve were clearly identifiable, but the 2-seam and 4-seam fastballs kind of blended into one another so it was hard to tell where the line was. This kind of thing varies by pitcher and as Strasburg refines his 2-seamer (which I believe he didn’t use as much in college), there might be more distinctiveness on it.
Anyway, here are some links about pitch type:

I went and listened again just to make sure I hadn't misquoted the RZO...
But that’s what he said, I imagine he was just speaking extemporaneously and misspoke, can’t imagine the Nationals aren’t aware of what he throws…
I’m asking around a little though…Do you have a link to the Pitchf/x conversation…
i saw Storen talking about analyzing his own data recently, didn’t read Strasburg…
Interesting…

Or maybe Strasburg has a secret slider...
…and Rizzo accidentally spilled the beans!
Here’s an article written after Strasburg’s drubbing last fall which was captured on pitch f/x:
http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2009/10/22/1097010/stephen-strasburg-pitch-types
I’d link you to some graphs, but Brooksbaseball’s AFL tool seems to be down. If it gets fixed, I can grab some graphs from it over the games Strasburg pitched that had pfx (I think just two) and circle which pitchers and which or what not. I do wish there was a nice horizontal break x vertical break with velocity shown via color, but I don’t think there was anything prebuilt for the AFL that does that and I haven’t had time to prepare and graph the data myself. But I digress.
Btw, you have a link to Storen talking about pitch f/x?
I must have missed that. Sounds interesting.
Btw, as I recall, Strasburg himself talked about only having one breaking ball in the press conference after his first Spring Training bullpen session.
Audio link: Strasburg on his pitches
In the middle, Strasburg talks about how he’s working on his two seam fastball to get in on hitters since that’s possible with wooden bats. At the end of the interview, he mentions he has four pitches, and one breaking ball, which he terms a curveball-slider morph.
I’ve never heard him talk about pitch f/x per se.
Harry Pavlidis has put links up here every once in a while that are always great reading...
I remember reading that article before, just cause the sharp 80mph curve sounded brilliant…
So fastball, sinker/two-seam, brutal change and sharp slider/curve? Rizzo did differentiate at the end, but it was edited in an abrupt way and he was wandering toward the end of a sentence…

Strasburg needs a Posse.
Doesn’t every great “potential” star meander about these days w/an entourage or some kind of posse? Is it opinion or a fact that the constant media scrutiny is “already” getting to him (Strasburg)?
…as he has seemed overwhelmed at times…writes Mr. Goldstein. Mr. Goldstein, do tell; what in Strasburg’s performance led you to believe this. Already w/the criticism of someone based on non-baseball related influence. Oy vey!
- Side note: I’ve bought more Nationals swag this year than Mets swag. Hmmmm…Of course my new Mets jacket is righteous!!!!

I'm guessing the "overwhelmed" comment is still referring to Strasburg's very first workout in Florida...
Where he was just tossing the ball around and reporters showed up and caught him off guard…he was supposedly standoff-ish and even apologized a few weeks later, saying he thought he made a bad first impression…
Other than that I haven’t read too much aboot Stras being overwhelmed, everything since then has labeled him a hard-working, humble pitcher…

Good stuff.
Good to hear. Just burns me up a bit to hear a reporter start writing about someone’s ‘apparent’ weakness when it has nothing to do with what kind of baseball he plays. I don’t want Nats fans thinking they have a potential Khalil Greene situation on their hands. Not to speak ill of Khalil. I like the guy. A shame that his affliction is keeping him from playing baseball.

I imagine things will be different this year concerning the weather.
It will probably be excruciatingly hot and humid as opposed to the lousy rain that caused so many delays last year.
Give me hot and humid. I’ll just counter that weather w/a few, cold, frosty ones. :-)
