Washington Nationals At Florida Marlins: Spring Training GameThread.

There's nothing like getting beaten in 26 of the last 35 regular season games played to make you despise (in a fun-sports-kinda-way) another team, and for the Washington Nationals to have that team be the Florida Marlins, the Jeffrey Loria-owned-reward-for-destroying-the-Expos, who've managed to win two World Series in their 17-year-existence while the Nats have only recently begun to recover from the damage Loria inflicted upon the first Major League Baseball franchise to play outside the US, only makes it worse. So far this Spring the Fish dominance continues, with Florida 3-1 in 4 games (that don't count), and this afternoon (at 1:05 pm EST on the radio on XM/185 and MLB Gameday Audio, which has the Florida feed), the Marlins throw staff ace Josh Johnson against the visiting Nats and Opening Day lefty John Lannan, who makes his third start this Spring in the Montreal Expos' old Spring home, Roger Dean Stadium in sunny Jupiter, Florida.

DC Starting Lineup: After The JUMP!!!!

Star-divide

DC Starting Lineup: courtesy of Washington Post writer Adam Kilgore.

  1. TAWH - Thrillie Harris - RF
  2. Adam "Two-Spot" Kennedy - 2B
  3. Ian "Opening Day" Desmond - SS (Word.)
  4. Chris "The Project" Duncan - 1B
  5. Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez - C
  6. Eric "Utility" Bruntlett - 3B
  7. Justin "J-Max" Maxwell - CF (RF in April?)
  8. Roger (5th OF) Bernadina - LF
  9. John "Cool Hand" Lannan - SP - Eating 40 Eggs.
Josh Johnson, the Marlins' 26-year-old ace, was (2-0) in 6 starts and 33.0 innings pitched against the Nationals in '09, but he's struggled a bit this Spring, having given up 8 hits, 4 walks, and 6 ER in 8.0 IP over which he's K'd 9. John Lannan was (2-1) in 4 starts against Florida last season, giving up 23 hits and 10 ER in 20.1 IP, and surrendering 4 walks and 4 HR's to the Fish, who K'd 18 times against the Nats' left-handed ace. In 2 starts and 6.0 IP this Spring, Lannan's hit 2, walked 1, K'd 4 and allowed 3 runs, 2 earned, on 4 hits. The Nats vs The Fish. The "rivalry" continues...but the big question is what will Emilio Bonifacio do to hurt the Nationals today?

Who's Listening To The Nationals?

He’s not even on the team really and doesn’t deserve to be based on his production the last couple of years. By all accounts, he is nice and his Dad is the dentist to the prez. BFD! Sorry. I still steamed.

Anything

Get the best piece you can. Eat some money but get whatever can help the team the most in 2012 and beyond.

Atlanta could be looking for a bat if Glaus falters. Cox last year so they will be agressive.
The White Sox don’t have a DH.
He could also go to Texas, Bos, Bal, TB depending on injuries.

I think the key is the Nats should eat the salary to get the best young guy they can

by HobbsNY9 on Mar 21, 2010 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions

2012 not 2011

Yeah add two pieces and to a good rotation next year and we may fight for the wild card. You’re not crazy. But the team would do much better to strive for 2012. Don’t build a possible Wild Card run based on guys like Pudge, Marquis, Dunn, (two years older than today by Oct2011). Even if you don’t think they will add all the production they will be a big part of the payroll.

Now think about 2012. It’s a lot of the same productive players without the dead weight. Zimmerman,Strasburg, Storen, Desmond, Plush, Espinosa, Zimmermannnnn, Norris, (Deck – for Ed).

All these kids will be cheap and there should be free money by not going for it in 2011. Think 2012. No Dunn. Let’s play some solid ball now because you don’t go from 59 to 90 but 2012 could be the start of something special.

Good point on Plush

I just think he’s not going to be much worse in 2012 than 2011. For those who want a 2011 run.

I agree on Plush. He could be good. He could fade quickly. But still he is a minor part of the 2012 run. There is a lot there.

by HobbsNY9 on Mar 21, 2010 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I'll settle for Plush being an adequate defensive CF this year

Somewhere somehow we need to show that we can draft, develop, or trade for outfield talent and depth. That’s being exposed in a real ugly way this year and it will be interesting to see whether we can address that need by 2012.

Buying bats

The key is to buy them right when you need them. Don’t sign Dunn this year for a run that is two years out. Sign one of the huge 1B that are available after 2011: Pujols, Prince, AGonzalez, Howard.

by HobbsNY9 on Mar 21, 2010 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions

To me this is like the year Ovechkin got drafted by the Caps

You finally have a buzzworthy gradeA/A+ prospect. He can carry us to sporadic buzz but not the playoffs. Only when we get a 2nd banana worthy of following him up do we contend. If Zimmermann is that 2nd banana and the FO spends money rather than just talking about it we get our race in 2011. In the more likely event that Zimmermann is not fully back start of 2011 and the FO is still counting dollars, I think we land a major draft pick in Harper or whoever else Rizzo deems worthy and our ready for the show in 2012.

Hey folks, just remember it could be worse. Just look up the road to the stinkitude the Mets are trotting out in Citifield and how it has demoralized what youth they had and their farm system and you realize we’re not the joke of the division at least right now.

Yes, that's true

I guess I should say you need to net one or two homegrown players of significance each year. What made last year such a bomb was Zimmermann’s injury. Strasburg plus Storen plus Mock as major leaguers would be a great, great year. I could even settle for Morgan regressing to mean. Of course, we would have to subtract Dukes, though.

Agree

The playoffs are coming. This team has too much young talent with Strasburg and RZimmerman and other. But I think the difference is going to depend on how the team spends their money on older players. If the team gets excited about a run in 2011 they will hurt the chances to really use these young guys. I hope as a fan base we will see this and wait for 2012. 2012 and beyond will be great.

If he could show he’s a legitimate major league pitcher. As bad as spring training has been, Mock showing some degree of legitimate intelligence is a real positive.

He will be around in 2012

I think Mock has a chance to be a solid or above average MLBer for cheap. A valuable asset. Detwiler too. These are guys with some good stuff so hopefully one or two of them will emerge over the next two years.

I throw Maxwell/Bernadina in there as well

Not optimistic on Maxwell/Bernadina

4th outfielders at best and not a lot of wins. The best hope is for more pitchers than advertised to develop and to shake some prospects out of that.

Yeah a good assessment. There is also a ton of uncertainty with Desmond and Espinosa. Their development and talent will be a huge factor. Easy to pencil them in in 2012 but exactly how good will they be. Also Norris.

Smaller pieces like Mock are key but it’s really going to be how good are the prospects

I didn't fill out a bracket either, but then

my beloved Tar Heels stunk up the season so badly, they didn’t even make it to the “Big Dance.” They are doing ok at the NIT at least, but what a fall from grace after winning it all last year.

They sign a good, veteran for RF?

One with some pop in his bat and ability to catch the ball?

by MissB on Mar 21, 2010 4:20 PM EDT up reply actions

NO additions

Harris is as good as anyone they could sign. Look it up. He is stellar defensively.

Without committing more money they will be more likely to give time to Maxwell and Bernadina. Another plus right?

And the money saved by not signing someone else can be used in the future or the draft or the deadline.

by HobbsNY9 on Mar 21, 2010 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think Harris in an everyday outfielder, he's a good fourth, but as the starting RF he's lacking the necessary offensive production..

Vivian Jaffe: "Have you ever transcended space and time?"
Albert Markovski: "Yes. No. Uh, time, not space... No, I don't know what you're talking about."

by Patrick Reddington on Mar 21, 2010 4:26 PM EDT up reply actions

He makes up for it defensively

He is a stellar defender. Look at his production the last three seasons. From 2007-2009 he has had 1208 PA. He has been worth 5.9 WAR according to Fan Graphs.

If we give him a full season will he be worth 2.95 WAR? Probably not. But he is a vastly underrated player. He could certainly be worth 2 WAR.

This also allows a better look for JMax and Bernadina. The team will be more committed to whoever they add now. Save the money for later.

by HobbsNY9 on Mar 21, 2010 4:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Harris 2010

Last year he was worth 1 WAR in 400 PA so 1.5 WAR for a full season.

Maybe that is what we should imagine for 2010. I think the 3 year sample is a better indicator though and most agree. The Chone projections are for him to be just above average of 2WAR/ 150 Games.

Another thing to remember is that guys improve when they start. It’s harder to come off the bench. If Harris is given a full season he would surprise you with his production. He is as good as anyone they can add.

by HobbsNY9 on Mar 21, 2010 4:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Another point for Harris

His 1WAR in 2009 also includes many innings where he was misused at 2nd base where he is poor defensively. He would have been adding value in the OF instead of subtracting at 2nd.

He is vastly underrated.

by HobbsNY9 on Mar 21, 2010 4:40 PM EDT up reply actions

They still don't have a long term solution in RF

But the short term is fine. They won’t find a long term solution now and maybe Maxwell or Bernadina will really surprise us. Maybe the long term solution will come this offseason or maybe in later in a trade
