Washington Nationals/New York Mets: Spring Training GameThread.
• Random Links and Notes:
• The latest round of cuts came this morning for the Washington Nationals, as reported here at Federal Baseball by Dave Nichols from the Nats News Network with RHP Shairon Martis sent to Triple-A Syracuse, while INF Pete Orr and OF Chris Duncan went to Minor League Camp... • The Nats and New York Mets play a 1:05 pm EST game this afternoon...• According to MLB.com's Bill Ladson's latest blog post entitled, "Three things to look for on Monday", Jordan Zimmermann and Chien-Ming Wang will be throwing bullpen sessions at some point today. • Jason Marquis will make his third start of the Spring against New York this afternoon. • After Ian Desmond's 2 for 4, 2 error performance yesterday (and one of the error's was tough scoring), Jim Riggleman penciled Cristian Guzman in at short today against New York. The Mets' have right-hander Mike Pelfrey (who's allowed 15 hits, 8 R, 7 ER and just 1 walk in 3 Spring starts and 10.0 IP), starting opposite the Nats' Marquis this afternoon and after that, according to New York Times' writer David Waldstein's article entitled, "Wilpon (Not Mets) Leaves Seinfeld Laughing", the Nationals will see, "Mike Pelfrey, Bobby Parnell, Sean Green, Ryota Igarashi and [Jenrry] Mejia..." When the Nationals released Elijah Dukes last week it opened up a competition for the starting job in right that MLB.com's Bill Ladson speculated in a blog post entitled, "Harris to be Opening Day starter; Bernie in outfield mix", will be filled, at least on Opening Day, by Willie Harris, but according to Mr. Ladson the Nationals haven't ruled out other options:
"Don't rule out general manager Mike Rizzo trying to acquire a right fielder. Jermaine Dye is still a free agent. Don't look for the Nationals to break bank to acquire his services. If Dye is too expensive, look for the Washington to make a trade for an outfielder."
DC Starting Lineup: AFTER THE JUMP...
DC Starting Lineup:
- Cristian Guzman - SS
- Adam Kennedy - 2B
- Ryan Zimmerman - 3B (Word.)
- Adam Dunn - 1B
- Josh Willingham - LF
- Justin Maxwell - CF
- Mike Morse - RF
- Wil "Blocker" Nieves - C
- Jason Marquis - SP.

J. Zimmerman
I am confused. I thought that he was clearly and unquestionably out for the entire season. But he’s now throwing off a mound. Is he actually closer to being back than originally announced?
he's "throwing"
but only at about 50%. Rizzo was pretty clear in statements last week he won’t pitch competitively until August.

Only throwing fastballs from what I read too, but they said (as Dave notes above)...
That regardless how ahead of schedule he is right now, he’ll be held out til August, which is smart. The kid’s young, he’s bouncing back quickly, but you can’t rush the no.1 pitching prospect (outside Strasburg) back for games that probably won’t mean anything late this year…
But the takeaway from the Zimmermann news right now is that he’s busting his butt to get back onto the field…

it takes several months for TJ surgeries
to build up arm strength once they beging throwing. Ask Matt Chico.

Wait as long as you want with Zimmermann, I know he'd disagree...

I approve of this message
I’d like to see something to let us know whether he is on schedule, ahead of schedule, or behind schedule but I agree that we don’t need to see him in DC unless he’s one hundred percent healthy. If I had to choose between seeing Detweiler in DC this year and Zimmermann, I’d prefer Detweiler almost.
erskine has scored...now i can die in peace
I think Detwiler's expected back a lot sooner, how long it will take him to get in shape...
I have no idea…I expect he’ll be in the Nats’ rotation sooner than later….

Oh yeah, he’s expected back a lot sooner. There’s a lot of heat on that 4th starter position. Perhaps the main affect of his injury has been to give Livo a roster spot.
erskine has scored...now i can die in peace
If that's the case
Then I’m really mad about the delay in surgery. Livo. Bah, humbug.

For those of you scoring at home
Marquis after 3 – 13 batters faced, 2 groundouts, 5 flyouts, 1 strike out (and 1 hit – he might be competing for the backup right fielder?)
Relax, all right? Don't try to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

Stammen in the Pen
I think making him a reliever could really be a sign of confidence. He doesn’t have much of a future in the rotation. If he gets the 5th spot he will be pushed out by Stras, Zim, Wang. He could be a cheap player in the bullpen for years. Even a long man
Same deal with Martin
I just think Martin has less potential. And less to gain by being a reliever. He is just a 4-A pitcher. Stammen could become a solid and valuable arm in the pen. IMO
I think that's where Stammen's headed too, and he'll end up getting starts....

A bit of both
I think he starts and relieves. Goes back and forth. But his long term future is a reliever. Livo has no long term future with the Nats. When ZIm, Wang, Strasburg are ready Livo goes out the door. When that happens Stammen can go to the pen
Remember right now Mock is our 3rd starter
Mock is no lock to make it through the year either. I’d like to see Stammen make it over Olsen for one. Syracuse’s rotation will be pretty solid this year regardless it looks like.
erskine has scored...now i can die in peace
He has more of a future in the rotation than Livo
If he pitches well enough to get into the rotation let him pitch there as long as he can earn it. If he outperforms Livo let him stay there even when Stasburg and Wang return. Don’t forget Detweiler either as a potential starter by midyear.

At this point they know what he can do at the plate
Relax, all right? Don't try to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.
Stammen stays in the game and gets the sac bunt down...
Somebody’s pitchers have been practicing!!!

good way to help himself make the roster

Nats Journal just posted a Jermaine Dye entry
Personally my answer is that you let things ride on this team for awhile because you will have to overpay for him and Dye is a bad defender for our young pitchers. Last year we learned how bad D can rock a team’s psyche.
Go with your pitching rotation as is. Observe Willie Harris or a Willie Harris + Mike Morse(ground ball pitchers)/4th OF defender Maxwell/Bernadina platoon for 25 games or so. If they are above replacement level keep that. If not, trade AAAA pitching for a replacement level right fielder.
Eventually we will have to trade or sign a RF to contend but this doesn’t seem like the year to do that and Dye isn’t the guy I want.
I’d rather do something like the Mets did with Jeff Francoer deal.
Punch the Bowden for the legacy of Kearns and Dukes.

Guzman 3 LOB so far...
Hi All, love the community, this is my first post. BTW, I am on the Desmond bandwagon (hard not to be). The byproduct of Guzman at leadoff is not only shortening pitch counts for opp. pitchers, he’s killing any production by the bottom of the order. Anyone have a comparison of how many Guz has left on vs. Des in ST per AB?
Also, thanks to those that run this site, it’s nice to see that I’m not the only one with hope for my Nats.
I can look up the LOB later, in my car at the moment....

Thank for the first post...
And for supporting Desmond, otherwise the first post might not have gone so well…I kid, I kid!!!

Uh oh
Stammen gives up a leadoff double. Really want to show that you can get these AAA guys out.

Generic Met with w/ a double...I've given up on keeping track of these minor leaguers....
Here’s Ike Davis, I know him…

No boots big guy!
Just get through today with some good fielding to put these concerns to rest.

By the way - Taveras got an RBI in the bottom of the 7th
to go along with the catch. I like to see guys competing

If only J-Max realized he was competing...Been waiting for him to put it together...
It’s frustrating to watch him blowing this chance…

Unfortunately. Neither. Is. Taveras.
What’s with the periods?

Periods for emphasis on Maxwell although I hope that I’m proved wrong. I think that I’m holding my nose and rooting for Harris to be a placeholder until a trade is made after we have a better sense of what exactly our young pitching inventory is this year.

Stammen gets out of trouble
This is an impressive outing that will certainly help his case
erskine has scored...now i can die in peace
Gets the K to strand a runner and end another IP, well played, Stammen...
I think he’s got toughness points in his favor too for pitching with chips in his elbow all last year, all the Nats’ Front Office types are constantly praising Stammen, deservedly so….

Mets A prospect Martinez
Just gunned down the general at the plate.

Desmond pops out in his first AB, swinging first pitch like Guzzie...

Uh oh--learning the wrong lessons from Guz.
And the General continues to cover himself in shame…didn’t believe in Martinez’ arm.
FMart is one of the few Mets' prospects I like...

Just read the Mets season review
Surprisingly, the guy was not totally down on the Mets system. Sounds like he feels there just bottom heavy and they are lacking A prospects. I’ll believe that when I see it.

Stupid scouts with their stupid accurate assessments....
Desmond just keeps missing the easy one….kills the ball makes tough plays and boots gimmes….

Good to see that both Zim and the Hammer are warming up their bats.
Craig Stammen with four Ks?
that’s a nice day for the kid

Yep, pitched 4 innings and he kept his composure after Taveras dropped a ball and
Desmond committed another error.
Desmond is giving them all the fuel they need to send him down
but if Guz can’t make the throws…

maybe he is a right fielder after all

Not enough pop to be a RF
He’s got to play solid D or else he’ll just be AAA or super utility player. He doesn’t want to be in AAA this year because he’ll risk having Espinosa pass him.
erskine has scored...now i can die in peace
the Nats are much better if he can handle short, but
I’m not so sure he doesn’t have the pop to play rf….

Line on Stammen
4 innings pitched, 2 hits, 2 Runs, 0 Earned Runs, 0 BB, 4K, 5 ground ball outs, 2 fly ball outs, and a Sac Bunt. Spring ERA – 2.89

He seems to be ahead of Olssen at this point but I guess we’ll know more later in the week.

+1 on Stammen
- 5 on Maxwell
even on Desmond
3 on Marquis -- let’s start to worry, eh..
Love = Hammer and Zim and Bruntlett (well maybe a warm feeling) and Kennedy ( You got to love the name, right)
Chilling to = Max and Bernie ( We need a RF’r like yesterday and I’d prefer one that doesn’t rhythm with Romaine Fry)
I don't see what was so funny about Waldstein's article.
I like Seinfeld and I like the Mets. Where was the humor in the article? Sure as heck wasn’t funny looking at the box score for Pelfrey today.
Wonderful…More mediocrity from the #2 starter for the Mets. Looks to be a long season.
This season I will expect the worst but I will be prepared for 'worser'.

In that article, Lou. Didn’t read aboot Seinfeld, good to see I didn’t miss any “Gold, Jerry!”
