New York Yankees 3, Washington Nationals 1. Javier Vazquez And Livan Hernandez Dominate.

• Quick Recap: It was like a trip back to 2003 for this longtime fan of the franchise, if only Livan Hernandez and Javier Vazquez were still wearing the home whites with royal blue pinstripes and the royal blue eMb caps instead of their current, respective, lids. Vazquez in Yankees' midnight blue, threw 6.0 innings against the Nationals, giving up 4 hits and 1 ER while recording 6 K's. Hernandez walked 2 and allowed 3 hits and 1 ER in 5.0 innings on the mound in which he may very well have earned himself a spot in Washington's twenty-ten starting rotation. After Livan left the game following the fifth with Washington down 1-0 on Alex Rodriguez's RBI triple in the fourth, Jason Bergmann came on in relief and allowed things to get out of hand (with Mike Morse's help), giving up a leadoff double to Nick Johnson, (which Morse misjudged) and another RBI hit to A-Rod, who singled Johnson in with a grounder up the middle and scored when Robinson Cano singled in the next AB. 3-0 Yanks after six. Cristian Guzman singled off Vazquez and scored (well his pinch runner Eric Bruntlett did) with Damaso Marte on the mound when Bruntlett stole second and Alberto Gonzalez hit an RBI double into the right center gap...

• Notes: Justin Maxwell? You're missing your shot. Brian Bruney, Tyler Clippard, Jesse English? 3.0 scoreless combined, are they all on the Opening Day roster? Couldn't help but notice Ian Desmond doubling off Mariano Rivera late in the game...What, Guzman?...Just saying...Mike Morse? See Justin Maxwell note. Roger Bernadina? See Morse, Maxwell...

• Yankees win, 3-1.

Jason Bergmann

Is not helping his chances. Does that job belong to Jesse English yet?

Big call on Bergmann

I think he is out of options…so its either he gets it together or its DFA and Waivers time.

Personally, I dont mind that – we need a much better pen from the start this season.

I like the guy and would hate to lose him

But he isn’t perfoming. A bad spring may have cost him a job with this team.

Austin Kearns hitting .300 this spring.

Likewise...

But the same goes for a few of the pitchers. Olsen is another….and Martin (but both have options). A few months in AAA might be the ticket for Olsen to get his groove and confidence back. Of course, he might not come back at all…but im hoping he does.

Im not that concerned about Kearns. Last spring he lit it up and then went nowhere fast in the regular season (from memory beating out Dukes). Ill make a judegment at the end of the season…but im pretty certain he wasnt worth the $10m he was due this year.

Yeah he wasn't worth the money

But I do hope he finds a little success over there in the American League. He looks as though he will make the team, I hope he gets his stroke back.

Olsen may be struggling, but what about the numbers Livo put up. Getting Tex to do the U-turn twice. Man I just hope the pitching staff can keep them in games this year.
