Nationals News: Ian Desmond in 2010 Edition

The Nats have announced that Ian Desmond, and not Cristian Guzman, will be the opening day starter at shortstop. I'm all in favor of this -- Guzman won't be around next season, Desmond has had success this spring, and he may well be a piece of the long-term puzzle.

Nationals News

Thomas Boswell's statistical projections show that Ian Desmond will likely play very well at shortstop.

Although he won't be starting this season, Guzman will "play a lot of shortstop." And he won't be traded.

Jason Maxwell has been optioned to Syracuse after batting .102 this spring.

As Ed already reported, the Nationals have named John Lannan, Jason Marquis, Craig Stammen and Livan Hernandez four of the team's starting pitchers.

Scott Olsen wants to be named the fifth starter, and Wil Nieves said that he pitched very well in his last start.

Non-Nationals News

Milton Bradley will bat cleanup to begin the season for the Mariners.
