Around SBN: Ellenberger vs. Sanchez Heats Up, Hughes Talks Retirement

Washington Nationals: In The New York Media.

• The three walks and five earned runs Jason Marquis allowed in his second inning of work Sunday afternoon caused a bit of a stir in the DC press, but in New York it was the Manhasset, NY native's comments to reporters that got the headlines. At one point this winter Marquis made it known that he would like to return to New York to pitch, but as New York Daily News writer Adam Rubin tweeted recently, "Jason Marquis says he doesn't know what Mets offered him, because he told agent to share only 'serious' offers." In an article by New York Newsday's Adam Rubin entitled, "Marquis against the Mets not with them today", on Marquis' attempts to draw the Mets' interest , the 31-year-old right-hander told reporters he, "'...wanted to come back to New York...because that’s where I’m from—to play in front of family and friend," and told his agent that he, "...wanted to be on the East Coast,'":

"'...you know, the teams that were on the East Coast that would make sense, close to my family. Obviously Washington was one of them and they showed the aggressiveness.'"

• DC bullpen option Jason Bergmann, a New Jersey-native, is quoted in the same article by the New York Daily News' Mr. Rubin explaining that he hoped veteran Mike Jacobs lost out on a roster spot with the Mets to another veteran, Frank Catalanatto, since Jacobs has historically dominated the Nationals' 28-year-old reliever, going, "...5-for-10 with four homers lifetime against Bergmann", who explains:

"I try to go in on him and I leave it over every time," the Nats pitchers said. "He’s ‘that guy’ for me."

In an interview with the NY Mets' announce team during Sunday afternoon's broadcast, former Mets' Manager and current special assistant to DC GM Mike Rizzo took a moment to talk about his new team, explaining as he has several times before what his impressions of the Nationals' '09 no.1 overall pick Stephen Strasburg:

Davey Johnson: "Well he reminds me a lot of Dwight [Gooden]. He's got great stuff, and to go with it he's got great command. When you throw strikes with several major league pitches, the only question you have in your mind from an organization standpoint is, 'Is his arm ready to handle every five days?' You know, in college, you pitch, like I think guys pitch on every Friday...they don't have a 5-man rotation, so it's a big adjustment, I think that's the only thing with him that he needs to get used to."

On Strasburg's $15.1M dollar deal:

"Davey Johnson: It kinda reminds me a lot of the bonus I got when I signed."

Strasburg's first Spring Training start's on Tuesday live on MASN and MLB.tv starting at 1:05 pm EST when he'll face off (for the first two innings at least) against the Detroit Tigers' Rick Porcello, with the Nationals' 2nd '09 1st Round pick Drew Storen also scheduled to throw for Washington.

Too bad the Sunday game didn't end up with the Nationals winning...

but I hope when the regular season gets underway, the Mets will regret not signing Marquis.

I think/hope the Mets are going to have a lot of regrets after this season...

Vivian Jaffe: "Have you ever transcended space and time?"
Albert Markovski: "Yes. No. Uh, time, not space... No, I don't know what you're talking about."
