Errors...again...
The Nats have one game with no errors…one game with two errors…and every other game they have one error…

Not looking too much better than last season. But, it’s early. You should all bookmark that website above. You can easily switch from fielding stats to batting or pitching stats.
Has Florida really committed 12 Es already
Now THAT’S rough.

Has this been discussed already?
Does Desmond have an error in every game he’s played? Or was he in the game when the Nats made no errors? Just wondering. My apologies if this has been talked about.
Patiently waiting for "next year" since 1971.
It hasn't been discussed...
All us Desmond-lovers are turning the proverbial blind eye to his errors thus far…
What errors?

errors?
Aren’t all his so-called “errors” really just the result of some devious conspiracy by Guzman-loving scorekeepers to supplant the rightful holder of the shortstop job?
I’m pretty sure that’s it.
Rob
"Man may penetrate the outer reaches of the universe, he may solve the very secret of eternity itself, but for me, the ultimate human experience is to witness the flawless execution of a hit-and-run." -- Branch Rickey
Seriously
Those errors have been mostly ignored because none of them have led (directly) to runs.
Rob

I haven't ignored them...and am concerned....
especially after Desmond’s nonchalance over them. When questioned about one, he shrugged and said: “It happens…just part of the game.”
No, Ian, it’s not supposed to part of the game. That’s why they’re called ERRORS.
Even worse, most of them have been to his…wait for it…..right.
Hey, isn’t that Guz’s problem?
Thankfully, most of the E’s haven’t been too costly so far.
Guz's problem
is his weak throwing arm… too weak for SS.

The errors are a problem
Boz wrote an article earlier on the Desmond decision where he felt that SS errors tend to go down with experience. If he can be adequate with the bat, I’m willing to watch him learn through the errors.

Latest on Zim:
@AdamKilgoreWP: Zimmerman says he is “just being careful.” Won’t pinch hit. Unsure if he’ll play tomorrow. Has yet to run, will take BP.
@washingnats: #Nats 3B Ryan Zimmerman took batting practice in the cage and didn’t have problems with his left hamstring.
@MarkZuckerman: Ryan Zimmerman out of #Nats’ lineup for third straight game with tight hamstring. Alberto Gonzalez at 3B tonight vs. PHI.

Don't toy with our emotions my friend
I think they’ll let him gut this out for a week to 10 days before going retroactive. He’s just that important. Mike Morse busts a fingernail he’s on the DL. Zim not so much.

Quite excited
first Nats game I’m watching this season. Been on a vacation and missed the first week. Any predictions? I’m not too positive about Nats chances.
Hopefully they'll win today or tomorrow
When playing the Phillies, I count 1-2 as a good series. If they can avoid getting swept, that’ll be nice. Anything more is too much to ask, I think.

I count 2-1 as a good series
and 1-2 at this point as progress. I count 2-1 as a good series and rationalize 1-2 after the fact not before. I am, however, enjoying how the Mets seem to be disintegrating before our eyes. Thankfully our FO can see that Gary Matthews Junior, Luis Castillo, and Mike Jacobs should not be paraded in anyone’s starting lineup on a regular basis.

From my perspective
…it sounds like Stammen was the victim of some bad luck. Ground ball pitchers need good luck. He got a short grounder from Victorino, and barely misplayed it into an infield hit. He got a ground ball on the right side from Howard that that would have been an out if he had managed to keep men off base. He got a ground ball to Dunn that would have been played or at least kept on the infield by a good infielder.
The inexcusable thing was the walk up 3-0 and up 0-2 in the count. That was the at bat that tipped the inning IMHO.

Don't do it. Don't do it.
Wait until the 2nd half of the year at the earliest. But we’re going to have to extend for the same reason that we extended Guzzy. If Desmond had shown us anything before last year, we wouldn’t have extended Guzman. But he struggled with injuries. Knowing our luck we’ll extend Hammer and then Burgess will blow up and Hammer will regress.

It was Burgess with a two out RBI singer to plate two in the first to get them on the board. 2RBI for him. Nats bench for future reference
8 relievers
8 position players in the game
4 starters since Olsen is down
Bernadina
Taveras
Desmond
Nieves
injured Zim
Am I missing anyone?
What Riggles is saying is that Marquis is basically the same as Bernadina and Taveras as a pinch hitter. You don’t want to use Desmond this early. Plus you may want to use Bernadina or Taveras as a defensive replacement for Hammer later on in the game. I thoroughly support pinch hitting Marquis in that situation. Marquis’ ability to pinch hit potentially is one of the reasons we can carry 8 relievers at this time.

Doghouse...referencing your source
When a runner attempts to advance from one base to another without the ball being hit, and is tagged out, the runner is said to be "Caught Stealing". Another way to put it is, a runner attempting to steal a base is tagged out.
A Pick Off is the term used when a fielder throws "behind" the base runner in an attempt to tag the runner who is far off the base.
The two most common scenarios of this are:
* A pitcher, pitching from the stretch, throws over to first base in an attempt to "pick off" the runner who is wandering off the base
* A catcher, after catching a pitch, throws to first base in attempt to "pick off" the runner at first, who is far off the base.
Njyer never made the “attempt”. He was never advancing towards the next base. He “was” getting set up to do so, but never did make the “attempt” to advance. What say you?

He wasn't trying to steal, but it sounds like they recording pickoffs as CS, anyway...

Baseball rule 10.07(h)
(h) The official scorer shall charge a runner as "caught stealing" if such runner is put out, or would have been put out by errorless play, when such runner
(1) tries to steal;
(2) is picked off a base and tries to advance (any move toward the next base shall be considered an attempt to advance); or
(3) overslides while stealing.
Note that the implication is that if the runner did not try to advance, then it is not a caught stealing.

as soon as I'm out...they drag me back in
1) is out. he didn’t try to steal
2) is out. he was picked off the base BUT not while trying to advance (or did i miss something?) looked to me as if he was just “preparing” and got caught while preparing.
3) is out. he obviously didn’t miss the bag because he never tried to steal.

didnt see this coming...not
S Burnett relieved J Bergmann.
C Utley homered to right.
Ian Desmond is my hero!
4 starters, 6 relievers?
Our pitchers aren’t doing much for us anyway.

Burnett has enough track record to justify sticking around
Bergmann barely hung on last year. This year it’s time to pack it in.
erskine has scored...now i can die in peace
the thing that narks me...
is that its not like we dont have options… we’ve got guys in the minors who could do better (hint hint)
Ian Desmond is my hero!
Who do you want to see instead?
The inventory for me in the minors is JD Martin and a bucket of a balls.

Keep forgetting about Storen since he's in AA right now
Yeah, Storen is better than everbody in that pen today but we must keep him under control.
erskine has scored...now i can die in peace
For true
We want to keep him under control longer. I don’t know the rules. But he’s ready today to contribute to this bullpen. You’ve got to try out the inventory I suppose, but he’s ready. Dominant performance saving Strasburg’s game from what I understand.

Guz to second, Desmond to SS, Gonzalez BACK to 3b. It’s like a weird version of a spring training game.

there are way too many free swingers on this club
we all know the pitching is terrible, no point in stating the obvious…. you cant go up hacking with men on base….
People say expand the strikezone with RISP
thats the WORST TIME you could possibly do that!
take the “convential baseball wisdom” and go poison this generation of ball players with it
Alright, punching out to write an angry review...

Wow - left the game at 9-7
Daughter called. Came back at 14-7. I personally blame Alexander G Bell. Maybe if he wouldn’t have invented the phone…
Relax, all right? Don't try to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

Acta is fine
He just got hired, and he’s a good manager. Ownership blew up the team over the past 2 years, giving up the two pitchers who faced off in the World Series in 2009, traded away V-Mart, etc. It’s going to be probably 2 years of rebuilding, waiting for those prospects they brought in to mature.
Manny Acta will be fine, and by 2012, he’ll have a pretty good ball club to lead. 2010? Well… They’re just trying to entertain their fans until they can win.
