Around SBN: The Ten Worst Swings Of The 2011 Season

Philadelphia Phillies 14-7 Over Washington Nationals, 14-7...

Philadelphia right-hander Kyle Kendrick got the Phillies off to the second rough start of the three-game Citizens Bank series with the Washington Nationals, giving up a two-out single to Cristian Guzman in the first, and issuing two two-out walks to Adam Dunn and Josh Willingham before allowing all three to score on Adam Kennedy's base-clearing two-out double into the right-center gap. 3-0 Nats. Craig Stammen did not have it tonight, however, and staked to a 3-0 lead, the 26-year-old right-hander gave up back to back singles to Shane Victorino and Placido Polanco in the Phillies' first, then walked Chase Utley to load the bases for Ryan Howard, whose two-run single moved Utley to third before he took third himself on Greg Dobbs' game-tying RBI double, and scored the go-ahead run on Raul Ibanez' sac fly....4-3 Phillies after one.

The Nats take the lead right back with Alberto Gonzalez doubling to start the second and moving to third on Nyjer Morgan's one-out single, after which Willie Harris works an 8-pitch walk to load the bases for Cristian Guzman, whose RBI single to center scores two to make it 5-4 Nats, and 6-4 after Josh Willingham's RBI ground-rule double to left chases Kyle Kendrick in favor of Philly reliever Nelson Figueroa, who gets the final out of the frame...Then Stammen hangs a two-strike slider up for the opposing pitcher, Figueroa, to line to left, and gives up a double to Placido Polanco before Chase Utley's HR to right on a fastball immediately after a mound visit...Seriously? 7-6 Philly...(cont. after the JUMP)...

• Final Score: Phils 14, Nats 7.

BACKPAGE:

• And it wasn't just Stammen. Stammen was out after Utley's first HR of the night, having thrown 53 pitches, 34 for strikes in 1.1 IP over which he allowed 7 hits and 7 ER, but in the top of the third, the Nationals tied it at 7-7 with Ivan Rodriguez singling to start the frame and scoring after a single by Alberto Gonzalez, a sac bunt by Stammen's replacement, Jesse English, and an RBI groundout by Nyjer Morgan that evened things up. English settled things down with 2.2 scoreless in relief, but Jason Bergmann gave up a one-out walk and a two-out, two-run HR to Shane Victorino in the fifth, and the Phillies added a run on Chase Utley's second HR of the game in the sixth, before Nats' right-hander Brian Bruney walked the bases loaded in the seventh and handed the ball to Tyler Clippard, who gave up a 3-run triple to Shane Victorino that made it 14-7 Phillies after seven. The Nationals' pitchers give up 14 hits, 14 runs and 5 walks...The Phillies win their fifth-straight and the Nats lose the fourth of five against Philly so far...

• Bernadina Down, Maxwell Up? Olsen For?

After the loss, the Washington Nationals announced that they would send Roger Bernadina back to Triple-A Syracuse, with Bernadina telling MLB.com's Bill Ladson (@washingnats) that the Nats would call up right-handed hitting outfielder Justin Maxwell since the Nationals, "...will face a lot of lefties in the next week." Maxwell, many thought, would take over in right field once Elijah Dukes was released this Spring, but the 25-year-old outfielder failed to earn the job, going 5 for 50 in Grapefruit League action before he was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse to start the season. Maxwell's 5 for 8 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI's in the last two games, and in 29 games and 49 at bats against left-handed pitching in the majors, Maxwell's hit .286 with a .352 OBP, .429 SLG, 1 double, 1 HR and 6 RBI's so far in his career.

Left-handed starter Scott Olsen is scheduled to start tomorrow's series finale with the Phillies, and the Nationals are expected to move a reliever off the roster to make room at some point tomorrow morning...

Okay, I know this sounds like major whining, but what is the point

of last season’s worst team in the division having six games against the division’s best team in the first two weeks of the season? And why do the Phillies get to play the Astros and Nationals in their first two weeks? Aren’t the Phillies allowed to play any teams with winning records from last season in the first two weeks?

Yes, the Phillies are a great team, but it seems like everything is stacked in their favor, it’s like MLB wants them so far ahead so fast that there is no contest. This makes no sense to me at all.

Sorry to vent, but it seems really stupid and lopsided and certainly doesn’t make for compelling viewing for baseball fans, either.

Patiently waiting for "next year" since 1971.

by Princess Jazzy on Apr 15, 2010 1:50 AM EDT reply actions

That's just how the schedule shakes out

A) I think there’s some sort of attempt to create a geographical rivalry between the two teams. But honestly, it’s exceptionally one-sided, and this is unlikely to happen. Just by the nature of the two cities, Philadelphia is more likely to look at New York as its arch-nemesis.

B) The Phillies play the same teams the Nats do. They’ll see the Astros too, soon enough. The only part of the schedule which is unbalancing is the interleague play, and frankly, the Nats get it easy. They go against AL juggernauts like the Baltimore Orioles, and the mighty KC Royals. Meanwhile, the Phillies get real cream-puffs like the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees. Pretty unfair, right? Good thing these games don’t count for the season record.

I just can't wait til Strasburg, Zimmermann, Wang and Detwiler knock one of the other NL East teams out of the playoffs this September...

I’ll gladly help Bobby Cox to one more NL East crown before he’s done if it means knocking the Phils out…

The Nats knew they had a tough schedule to start the season, when you pitch like they do, though, every stretch is going to be tough…

I think it’s a combination of them wanting Obama for first pitch and StanK wanting to make sure he wouldn’t have to work too hard for his home sellout.

I’m not complaining, though. Better to lose games we might have lost anyway with the B team.

Also, remember that early season struggles put more pressure on management to bring up Storen and Strasburg as soon as it is evident to all that they are better than the roster drek.

Phillies don't play the Los Angeles Dodgers until

the last week of August. WTF? I really don’t want to hear any whining from Philly fans about playing the Yankees and Bosox during inter-league. They will be so far ahead in the standings by then it won’t matter.

Patiently waiting for "next year" since 1971.

by Princess Jazzy on Apr 15, 2010 11:59 AM EDT up reply actions

The intradivision schedule is balanced

The Phillies will play the LA Dodgers in August — but know what? This is going to be a bad year for the Dodgers. The McCourt’s are blowing up the team during their divorce. Odds are, they aren’t going to be a serious contender this year. Jose Padilla was their opening day starter, just to give you an idea.

The Nationals do get to avoid a real competator though, St. Louis, until pretty late in to the summer. There’s a little two-game series where St. Louis swings by for a hello, but other than that? Nope until late August. And the Cardinals are very much a dangerous team. But know what? Who cares all that much about the scheduling of intradivision games.

The Phillies play 3 versus Boston in late May. After a few inter-division series, the Phillies have a 9-game stretch where they play Boston, the Yankees and then the Twins. These are all serious contenders in the AL. But rather than complain about it, I expect some seriously good baseball. If the Phillies can win 4, I’ll be damned happy (I really loathe having to play in AL stadiums; not having a career DH is absolutely ridiculous for NL teams to compete. But I think the DH in general is dumb, so…)

+1 on DH = abomination

…plus, what will we do with Dunn now that he seems to be turning into an actual 1B?

Relax, all right? Don't try to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

we needed a compitent pitcher…. didnt get one… now you have all your eggs in a basket with a broken down wang and a baby…. we had the trade bait and we should have made the harang move…. he was a guy coming off two awful years who you couldve stolen… now we have a guy in marquis who dosen’t even strike out 6/9 while bb almost 4/9… its a joke…

if you dont pull the trigger no one to blame… and the fans have to suffer

I am not down on Marquis yet. I think he’s a sinkerballer who is struggling with feel and the umps who will eventually get it together. I am not down on Lannan either yet. We won a series from a not so good team. We lost two series to a very good team. Anyone who had playoff aspirations can ratchet those expectations down. If we consistently win series from bad teams we will make progress. And avoid sweeps. It would be nice to avoid the sweep today with a Dunn dinger.

But Dunn’s offense seems to suck energy from his defense. Yikes!

Informal Poll....

Do you think Storen is ready to be brought up to the Nats?

by RoscoeNats on Apr 15, 2010 9:06 AM EDT reply actions

Yes!

What exactly is he learning down there, anyway? He signed early and has dominated at every level. He doesn’t need to stay down just to babysit Stras.

Heck, I’d say bring up the entire Senators pitching staff. They just threw 11 shutout innings last night… and lost. Perhaps Harrisburg needs Strasburg in the outfield on nights he’s not pitching so he can stroke some more doubles. He’s the Babe… He’s Jesus… He’s Baby Jesus?

On the field I have no doubt he’s ready, that’s why they picked where they did.

I’m not going that far. I will say that I saw Stammen staying on the roster all year, possibly being transferred to the bullpen at some point. Outings like last night suggest that the bullpen transfer may need to come sooner rather than later for all parties. He could take on the Batista role tomorrow and you could bring up JD Martin and I would not be sad one iota.

I believe that Storen will be up before May 1.

They won’t lose nearly as much money if he’s a super 2 as they would with Strasburg, and the perception would be that the Nats care. Plus, since Storen has an honorable agent, I think the Nats would get a fair shake come free agent time. No hometeam discount but at least a fair negotiation.

by RoscoeNats on Apr 15, 2010 11:32 AM EDT up reply actions

That would be awesome

Here’s hoping that Storen can do that because last night’s game is precisely the kind of game where we could have use Storen. They may have brought him in after English considering it a lower stress situation and we may have hung around a bit longer.

Of course

Everyone knows that Storen is ready. But once he’s up here he’s here to stay. I don’t have a problem with him being down for a while longer as we test out more inventory. But I will be greatly disappointed if Bergmann remains after what he’s been doing. Little upside, little performance. We shouldn’t have to coddle guys anymore.

they'd probably recall Bruntlett

because they really need another slap-hitting middle infielder on the roster.

sorry.

but i think it would be Bruntlett. Riggs is obsessed with utility players right now and if Zim misses time, Keenedy will slide to thrid and Guz will start at short, so they could use someone to fill in anywhere in teh infield, and Bartlett could be that guy.

I'm betting its Bergmann

We’ve had Bergmann around since Montreal. He hasn’t gotten it. He’s off to a slow start. The chances of him becoming a great pitcher somewhere else are remote. The chances of him becoming a decent pitchers somewhere else are fair. After a certain point, there’s just not so much further the relationship can go on.

Since we’ve got Storen in the wings, I’m less needing guys like Bergmann to provide bullpen hope.

Bruney’s numbers are really scary. He’s had high walk totals wherever he’s gone and what you see may be what you get.

When Riggs was Tracy's bench coach in LA they had a bunch of "Jims" as coaches.

The Nats have one of those “Jims” right now with Jim Lett in the bullpen. The guy they really need is Jim Colborn. He did a great job as pitching coach of the Dodgers and was with Tracy in Pittsburgh when Tracy got launched. He ended up with the Rangers in 2008 as their bullpen coach but I can’t seem to find out where he has landed. I would dearly love to see him replace Larry a/k/a “The Throwing Guy” Rothschild with the Cubs but I think he would be a better fit with Riggs and the Nats, IMHO.

In any event, Colborn needs to be someone’s pitching coach.

As for McCatty, I can’t really blame this on him. Frankly, guys, this is actually on Rizzo and the scouting staff. Look, Rome wasn’t built in a day and I think Rizzo and his staff have probably figured out that they aren’t as pitching “rich” in the system as they thought they were before the start of ST.

Jesse English, though being used in early situations where lots of runs are already on the board, is proving to be one cool dude. He had a sac bunt and 2 2/3 scoreless. Keep an eye on this southpaw.
