Last week on a MASN broadcast, Rob Dibble and Bob Carpenter were commenting on the recent spate of "football score" baseball games. Dibble wondered if the plate umpire had anything to do with the total score of a game. I went to the Pitch F/X data from 2009 for the answer, which was surprisingly - yes. Excluding umpires who called fewer than 10 games, the average total score for umpires in 2009 ranged from 7.3 to 13.3. See the results at my NatsStats blog here.
