Boston Globe's Nick Carfado: Elijah Dukes To "Take Year Off."
According to Boston Globe writer Nick Carfado:
"Evidently, Elijah Dukes will take the year off from baseball. The troubled former Nationals outfielder backed out of a deal with the Tabasco Olmecas of the Mexican League in early April after not showing up for a reporting date, according to a source with knowledge of the deal. It’ll be interesting to see whether Dukes ever plays baseball again."

Didn’t Dukes take last season off too? … ZING!
In all seriousness, hopefully this does some good for the young fella. Whether it improves his baseball skills, or allows him to enjoy his money, I hope it works out.

I don’t think he has that much money, and we all know that he has child support to pay by the boatload. He’s had issues meeting that child support in recent years and he wasn’t making enough to salt away playing for around MLB minimum while with the Nats. You really hope this guy gets it together, but this sounds like he has some deeper issues that may be under the surface and that kind of justify why the Nats cut him.
So sad. So sad.
Uh...yeah...Let's gets that Calder Cup!!!!
Not looking good
I agree that he doesn’t seem to have a lot of money saved up. I see one of two things happening. Either he ends up working as a UPS delivery guy or similar job. Or he ends up like Maurice Clarett or Ryan Leaf, two troubled former NFL players. Dukes won’t get any coaching offers and he won’t get any commentator positions either.
Maybe he could end up in one of the smaller independent leagues and at least make a decent living that way. Certainly not the money he was making in MLB but better than minimum wage. He wasn’t making millions with the Nats anyway. Wasn’t he on the low end of the pay scale, around $400,000/yr.? That’s good money but peanuts compared to what the superstars make. And he’ll probably never make that kind of money again.
