Definitely. Atilano made a statement last night.
He needs to make a similar statement. If he can’t get this lineup out, you have to be pretty concerned.

by Princess Jazzy on May 27, 2010 4:03 PM EDT up reply actions
anyone ever conside that, just maybe
most of these guys wouldnt be in a starting rotation on a team with some better pitchers.
It has nothing to do with ‘toughness’ imho… these guys arent that good
Certainly, I agree with this for the most part.
Outside of Lannan and Livo, you would hope that Atilano, Stammen, and the current mystery man in the rotation wouldn’t be in the rotation of a solid contending team.
Ian Desmond...because the future starts now for the Washington Nationals.
that's not entirely true though.
but, I was quite surprised that Riggleman lifted Atilano last night after 78 pitches to bring in a left-handed pitcher to face a right-handed batter. who then hit the first pitch to score the runner from third that should have been an out.

I would prefer if he would try to save his bullpen arms more as well.
You hope that we will either have more inventory in the bullpen or more guys who can go deeper into games as the year goes on.
Ian Desmond...because the future starts now for the Washington Nationals.
Yep, agree with this.
Both Livo and Atilano could have pitched longer.
Ian Desmond...because the future starts now for the Washington Nationals.
We don't know whether they are or not.
Riggles seems to be reluctant to let anyone go but 5 or 6 while he trusts his bullpen so much.
Ian Desmond...because the future starts now for the Washington Nationals.
I think that he is concerned about putting Storen in a real tight situation
so he lifts his starters earlier in order to make it easier on his younger relievers. Just a guess, but he’s said he wants Storen to pitch in easier situations to start out.

Storen has been good in all kinds of situations lately.

Me too. I'm just repeating what Riggs said about Storen when he
first came up. Maybe he is getting more comfortable with him after he saw him wearing the bat boy’s helmet. hehe Or not!

by Princess Jazzy on May 27, 2010 4:11 PM EDT up reply actions
I believe Riggles is trusting him more.
I think they will be more conservative with burning him out. Not as likely to pitch him on back to back days unless his pitch counts are minimal.
Ian Desmond...because the future starts now for the Washington Nationals.
This is what Stammen has been this year.
Short at bats. Guys get contact, often ground ball contact, and few stoppable balls are stopped.
Ian Desmond...because the future starts now for the Washington Nationals.
This is what has been so demoralizing about Stammen.
When we score, he seems to give the runs right back. Sounds like that was a very bad pitch.
Ian Desmond...because the future starts now for the Washington Nationals.
wasnt a terrible pitch
but after he waved at the last one in the dirt i’da put the next one off the plate as well
It seems like it is worse when the offense scores.
Stammen gives it back immediately. I think he should go when Jesus arrives.

MarkZuckerman With that HR, #Nats OF Josh Willingham over his last 8 games is 10-for-26 with 3 HR, 8 RBI, 7 BB and a .590 OBP.
Zuckerman seems to be the master of the 'isolated stat"
I.e., he finds exactly the right stat to fit his predilection. As usual though, one can “prove” pretty much anything one wants if one digs deep enough into some numbers.

I really think that they will have to address the position problem holes via trade.
This will be the offseason to see how Rizzo can pull of the trades. He’ll know his pitching inventory. Can he convert some of it into some problems who are closer to the major leagues.

Wanna know something really bizarre?
After reading Boswell’s column on the count in baseball being important (does the word “Duh” mean anything to you?), I started looking at ZImmerman’s splits. As best as I can tell, in his ML career, Ryan has never put a 3-0 pitch into play.
Think about that. On every 3-0 count, he has either taken a walk (71 times), or taken a strike or fouled one off. Isn’t that strange?

I don't blame Riggles for this one.
He didn’t make the error at 1st base. He didn’t give up the passed ball. He took Stammen out with a chance to get the win. Burnett has been good and had some bad luck as of late. Walker has been slightly better and has a better chance to strike that guy out.
Ultimately, you need to have some starter who can go 7 innings. We did today, and the defense let him down at the crucial juncture in this game twice.

it's frustrating with the defense... it still at times makes errors that it made last year
it’s like one step forward and two steps back.. last night we knock out Lincecum.. today our defense costs us. i think we need to play more consistently.
+1
Although, to be fair, Dunn’s was the only mistake made by a starter. Maldonado is a minor league lifer brought up by a perfect storm of injuries, and Maxwell isn’t the normal starter in RF
Maldonado and Maxwell are on this roster because they are expected to be plus defenders.
Maldonado is in our system to play plus defense and support our prospects.
JMax is trying to justify a roster spot with plus defense, speed, and an acceptable OBP. I have no problems with JMax. I understand that Maldonado is not a major leaguer, but Maldonado’s play especially was costly and is the kind of play that you can’t make during your cup of coffee when you’re a career minor leaguer.
Ian Desmond...because the future starts now for the Washington Nationals.
dunn missing a ball to put a guy on first
while it shouldnt happen…. should not open the door to a 3 run inning bullpen bad.
Bloop hits happen
Let’s see if we can get those runs back
Dunn's bad d is kind of given.
I expect him to make some bad plays, sadly. The problem was Maldonado’s passed ball. He doesn’t allow that passed ball and the double play remains in order and it’s far, far more likely that Stammen is given a chance to finish the 7th. Because of that play, the soft underbelly of our bullpen was exposed.
Ian Desmond...because the future starts now for the Washington Nationals.
We're not going to bunt, here.

A horrible Dunn-K.
Nats go down. :-(
Ian Desmond...because the future starts now for the Washington Nationals.
You can't blame that situation.
We did not handle our business defensively. This team must play good defense to win. It’s why you’d like to have other options than Dunn for 1B after this year. But we don’t, so we have to live with him and resign him. But Maldonado’s error was key. He simply can’t make those kind of mistakes.
Ian Desmond...because the future starts now for the Washington Nationals.
He's a journeyman catcher.
I cut him some slack. Plus I think Dunn’s doing fine at first.
-But the biggest negative for me was that the bottom-of-the-order guys didn’t get it done at the plate.
I don't know about that either.
Yes, Desmond had a bad game hitting wise. He’s a rookie who is going to have some bad games and he was key in last night’s game against Lincecum.
Gonzalez went 2-3 and is a reserve that we don’t expect much from.
Maldonado drew a walk and he is most certainly not a major league hitter. It’s his godawful bat that keeps him in the minors. His glove is supposed to be a major league glove.
Stammen had two successful sacrifice bunts and his one out was a hard hit ball.
Our waterbugs like Guzman and Nyjer in his at bat could be better but even there Kennedy was fine in his pinch hit opportunity.
Yes, there’s a lot that we could have done better but we are what we are offensively and good defense is what we have to have.
Ian Desmond...because the future starts now for the Washington Nationals.
Yep, that's right. You have to move on.
We can’t burn out Storen and Clippard. If these other guys are major leaguers and are on our roster they have to help us in key situations. They did not and we played bad defense so we lose.
By the way, does Walker have options?
Ian Desmond...because the future starts now for the Washington Nationals.
I am happy that we are still .500 but
I would be wayyy more happy if we were 2 games over .500. O well time to watch the Phillies lose.
Same..
Of course I’m happy we’re .500 and in the thick of things in the NL East, but I feel like I am expecting more from this team… like I feel like they are better than .500 and it’s frustrating when one or two little things prevent this team from getting a win one day, like today. I really feel like this team is capable of going on a run here where they win like 10 of 15… but they need to start playing more consistently.
It's a fragile team.
The starting pitchers are not really that great and that’s kind of what prevents us from going on a run. For us to go on a run, we’re going to need to get multiple starts of 7IP+ in a week. That’s a lot to ask right now. We’re going to have to cobble what wins we can together with our bullpen for the moment.
Ian Desmond...because the future starts now for the Washington Nationals.
And one of those middle relievers is going to be out of a job soon too...

I really don't know about that.
I don’t think they are ready to give up on Atilano as a starter. I think that they will send him back down to Syracuse and try to make him a tradable piece or a servicable starter.
Stammen was fine today.

We're gonna continue to see new folks as we get closer to Strasburgmania.

I would also like to remind people that a win June 7th is most important.
Much as we would love to be awesome today, in the long run a good looking draft is what we need. Our minor league system is not as good as Stan Kasten tells us, and it’s important that we make progress on that area in rounds 2 and beyond.
