Around SBN: How The Kings Beat The Coyotes: Lather, Rinse, Repeat

Washington Nationals Win 5-3, John Lannan Beats NL West-Leading San Diego Padres.

Tonight's Top 5:

5. LineupGATE: Adam Russell, a right-handed reliever who was demoted to Triple-A Portland on Friday to make room for the return from the DL of right-hander Sean Gallagher, was somehow listed as the San Diego Padres' starting pitcher on the lineup card turned in before last night's game against the visiting Washington Nationals instead of the actual starter, Clayton Richard, prompting Nats' Skipper Jim Riggleman to file a protest once the Padres had realized their error...it wouldn't be necessary...

4. Thank You For Blessing Me WIth A Mind To Rhyme And Two Hyped Feet: The Hammer, Josh Willingham takes a 91 mph first-pitch fastball deeeeep to center and GONE for a three-run HR off Padres' lefty Clayton Richard, who'd surrendered a leadoff single to Cristian Guzman and a one-out walk to Ryan Zimmerman before allowing Willingham's 10th HR of 2010. Washington takes a 3-0 lead with two out in the fourth. In his last 10 games, the 31-year-old Willingham is hitting .387 (12 for 31) with 4 HR's, 12 RBI's and 8 walks.

Star-divide

3. Desmond Goes Yard!! Makes Two Errors, Drops Important Bunt: With Washington up 3-1 after six, Ian Desmond gives the Nats some breathing room with a HR to left in the top of the seventh, that falls into the first row of stands, just out of reach of Padres' left fielder Oscar Salazar, who'd tracked Desmond's 4th HR of the year to the wall. In the bottom of the seventh, however, the 24-year-old Nats' infielder's charged with his 11th error of the year, when his throw on a grounder from Oscar Salazar pulls Adam Dunn off first, (though it looks to me like Dunn tagged Salazar). Then in the ninth, Desmond puts the Nats' closer in a tough spot when he attempts to turn a double play on a sharp grounder up the middle by Salazar (with whom Desmond was inextricably linked tonight), by flipping the ball he fields behind second to second baseman Cristian Guzman as he rushes to the bag, only to have the ball float by the Guzzzzzz leaving two on with no outs...Luckily, Desmond's bunt single (w/ Adam Kennedy on third running for Adam Dunn) scored the Nats' 5th run in the top of the ninth, so tonight's Matt Capps Experience isn't quite as stressful..

2. Riggleman's Choice? After Oscar Salazar reaches safely on Desmond's error in the seventh, and Chris Denorfia strokes a two-out single, Nats' Skipper Jim Riggleman makes a trip to the mound to talk to his starter John Lannan, and leaves Lannan in to face right-handed hitter Nick Hundley.  Lannan gets a fly ball to left with the same change he shattered bats with all night on the first pitch to the over-eager pinch hitter. Lannan's done after 7.0 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 K, 88 pitches, 56 strikes, 12 groundouts and 7 flyouts...Tyler Clippard surrenders a one-out single, strikes out Adrian Gonzalez and basically thrills the DC Faithful with another fearless outing...setting up the Mad Capper (chills)....

1. 17 fo 18 And The DC Closer Tradition. Pirates' catcher Yorvit Torrealba (who ends the night 3 for 4), singles to start the ninth off Nats' closer Matt Capps, and reaches second safely on Oscar Salazar's grounder to second when Desmond makes the ill-advised glove flip on the DP attempt with the Guz, so it's first and second with no one out in the ninth and the Nats up 5-2. Jerry Hairston, Jr.'s weak grounder toward third dies in the grass, and Ryan Zimmerman pockets it, bases loaded. Capps gets behind Chris Denorfia and throws a 2-1 fastball that's lined to center to score Torrealba and make it 5-3. Matt Stairs stares a full-count slider into the zone for a called strike three, Will Venable K's swinging through a 95 mph fastball (95?) after he'd fouled two off at 96, and with the bases loaded and the Nats' hitting coach's brother at bat, Capps escapes trouble by popping up David Eckstein to preserve the Lannan's win and carry on the DC Closer Tradition of "Making It Interesting" while recording his 17th save in 18 opportunities.

David Eckstein battles Clippard and eventually singles to right on a one-hopper in front of Maxwell. Clippard gets Adrian Gonzalez swinging at a 95 mph 2-2 fastball upstairs. Chase Headley flies out to center, 4-2 Nats after eight.

9 - Cristian Guzman grounds out to second, Ryan Webb's got one out in the ninth. Adam Dunn doubles off his own face on the right field wall's scoreboard. Adrian Gonzalez stretches for the throw from Hairston on Zim's groundout. Josh Willingham gets the intentionals to bring up Desmond, who drops a perfect bunt down on the infield grass to score Adam Kennedy, who's running on the play. 5-2 Nats. Maxwell grounds to short...Matt Capps on to close it, and he gives up a leadoff single to Torrealba. Going to be a tough win over Latos tonight...

We win games we should lose and vise-versa.

It sounds bad, but I would rather beat Tim Lincecum the day after we lose to Wellemeyer. Now if we can just beat Halladay.

Good News: It looks like John Lannan is going to continue his trend of playing much better as the season goes along.

The Shanahan era is going to bring the Redskins back to Glory! Great QB and an actual O-line.

Lannan getting back to being Lannan is surely a welcome development...

Looked in control out there all night and even talked Riggleman into letting him finish the seventh, or at least convinced him he could, good outing all around for the lefty…

It doesn't sound bad at all.

Our pitching isn’t that consistent so we’ll have days where our inconsistent pitching is the worst of the league and days where our inconsistent pitching is the better (but never really the best) of the league.

The good thing about the team beating some of the aces in the league is that it helps give them confidence and let’s us know that even in that unlikely mystical day where we back ourselves into this baseball that occurs in the latest possible part of the year, we will not be overwhelmed by the sense of the occasion because Luis Atilano has beaten Lincecum, Chico has beaten Johnson, and some guy I can’t remember today beat Johann.

a sign of relief

No not for Capps high wire act, but for Lannan’s return to form.
Now if only Olsen’s shoulder flare up turns out to be a false alarm and the Nats would stop d-king around with SS’s call up we might have something resembling a consistent pitching staff
Go you mighty Nats, go!

Lannan has been Cool Hand for 3 straight starts.

He’s got to keep this up against the Disastros, though. If we can’t get that team out, we have problems.

I thought it was odd that Carpenter got something wrong recently. It’s rare. Said Hammer against a pitcher was an SEC – Big 10 match-up. Hammer went to Northern Alabama. Very rare E on Carp.

Don't mean to nit-pick but..

I know what Yahoo’s profile page on Josh says, but it drives me nuts to see his university as “Northern Alabama”. Its North Alabama! Go mighty Lions!

Yeah, quit picking on Carp, Rosce...

Now I hope Carp corrects himself with the wrong info cause of Roscoe…

Thanks souldrummer.

I’ve been following Federal Baseball and posts since Josh was traded to the Nats. I’ve known him since he was in junior high in Florence AL. I know his parents as well. Josh is a tremendous person. I have to believe he is a huge positive in the clubhouse – maybe the anti-Elihah Dukes? Anyway, I’m now an official Nats fan – even went to St. Louis last year to watch the Nats play the dreaded Cards.

Nice, robbed the Marlins in the trade and picked up a fan...

Bowden occasionally did things right apparently.

Tell him we’ve grown into huge fans if that isn’t obvious.

I've always wanted to be a "throw-in" on a trade!

By the way, I know Olsen has been up and down due to injuries, but what happened to the player that went to the Marlins? I think the Bowden made a good deal on this one.

by Nash Nat on May 29, 2010 8:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah - the "other Bowden"..

Univ. of North Alabama football – still holds the Div II NCAA record for most victories in three consecutive years (41). I love college football – especially the “lower levels” that actually determine a champion with a playoff!

Bonifacio has been garbage and I believe he's in AAA.

There were a couple of prospects, Dean and Smolinski in the deal as well but that was pretty much a salary dump for the Marlins. The standard “we don’t want to offer arbitration” to a guy kind of move.

Hammer's been awesome.

We would have been far more respectable last year if we didn’t have him behind Kearns, Dukes, and Milledge in the outfield rotation last year.

Certainly a positive in the clubhouse. Given our lack of OF prospects, Josh’s classiness, and his production I hope that we extend him sooner rather than later.

by souldrummer on May 29, 2010 8:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Hope Josh keep producing the way he has.

Last year was a tough one for Josh – his brother’s sudden death, his illness in June, and as you pointed out, not starting the season as a regular really weighed on him. He still managed some memorable moments – like two slams in the same game. I think this year he is focused. Also “cleaning up” the clubhouse is paying HUGE dividends – got to give Rizzo and Riggs a lot of credit. Yeah – I’d love to see the Nats extend his contract.

by Nash Nat on May 29, 2010 8:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Me too, him and Dunn, cause no one is coming up in the system to replace them just yet....

We're on the outside looking in

But there’s a real sense of picking each other up and responding well to tough losses. Sometimes as fans you just see the statistics and not the relationships or characters that maximize team performance.

The Giants finally called up Buster Posey.

He went to my university, so I want him to succeed. I guess the Giants didn’t think they needed him against the Nats.

I wish him a great career.

Dominating victory on the posts. You might want to save some of that for the stretch run though. I’d hate to see you go on the Federal Baseball DL with “tired fingers”.

I do have to say that my internship at Japers' has trained me in the Jedi Way at SBN

But I am but a padawan over there. Usually I post intermissions, pre and post game. Unlike baseball, hockey is simply not the same over the radio. Plus, as a relatively new (last 14-18months) fan, I really need to watch what’s going on to get a sense of what’s going on. The contrast between JoeB and Locker to Sunshine Bob and Dibble paints MASN in an extremely unfavorable light.
