MLB.com's Bill Ladson: DC GM Mike Rizzo Says June 8th For Stephen Strasburg's Debut.

According to a post game Twitter report from MLB.com's Bill Ladson (@washingnats), the Washington Nationals' '09 No.1 overall pick, pitcher Stephen Strasburg, will make his MLB debut on June 8th in Nationals Park in the first game of a three game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Here's the actual Tweet:

"#Nats RHP Stephen Strasburg will make his MLB debut on June 8 against the Bucs, according to GM Mike Rizzo..."

The Nationals announced over the weekend that Strasburg would make one more minor league start for the Syracuse Chiefs on June 3rd in Buffalo, NY, after which they'll have to make a decision on who's off the 25-man roster to make room for the future Nats' ace, who's now thrown 50.1 IP in 10 starts, 5 each at Double-A Harrisburg and Triple-A Syracuse, in which the 21-year-old right hander is (6-2) with a 1.43 ERA and .157 BAA, having allowed 28 hits, 12 BB (2.15 BB/9) 14 R, 8 ER and collected 60 K's (10.73 K/9).

Yep! And that's what really pisses me off

I just spent an hour going back and forth on the Stub Hub site (which is a piece of junk) and also on MLB. What the hell happened to all of MLB’s tickets? It’s as if all the normally high priced seats were purchased so people could mark them up on Stub Hub. It’s complete BS.

Regardless, I got my ticket. Section 116; Row PP.

Possible Culprit...

Nats are packaging 4 games together and apparently including a June 8 ticket. From an e-mail.
-——————————————————

Stephen Strasburg will make his Major League debut on Tuesday, June 8, at Nationals Park when the Nationals face the Pittsburgh Pirates at 7:05 p.m.

To coincide with the anticipation surrounding his debut the Nationals have just released the New Era 4-game flex plan: Buy 3 Games, get 1 additional game for FREE plus a New Era Nationals Cap. This is a limited time offer of one cap per order, good while supplies last.

Due to the expected large crowds, fans are encouraged to save time by buying tickets online in advance and by planning ahead in traveling to the ballpark on June 8. The Center Field Gate will open at 4:30 p.m. Economy parking options near the ballpark
start at $5 and $10 and can be reserved online.

That is going to be an absolute mob scene. I've got a ticket to 6/4 as well and it will be fascinating to see how that goes as well.

They also have a particularly difficult time at the beginning of the season while the new employees find their way around.

Later in the season the lines are quite reasonable, even for the “busier” weekend night games.

Customer service on 6/4 and 6/8 will show a lot about the priorities of this organization.

It’s not a big deal for me. I’m there just for the baseball. I was kind of surprised by the blowback I got over at Japers’ Rink for Nats Park not being a good baseball park. I think it’s functional and above average and better value for DC than some of the cathedrals of baseball that have been built in recent year.. Some people think it’s really soulless, though.

Maybe this next topic should be a fan post but...

If Strasburg is as good as advertised and wins lets say; 75% of his starts, should the Nats entertain bringing Oswalt aboard.

Recognizng the Nats record to date with what they have, is it too out of the realm for the Nats to be true contenders this season if they had both Oswalt and Strasburg?

The Phillies hit a rough spot.

Atlanta has always been mentioned as the wild card candidate coming out of the NL East. With Heyward lighting up and their pitching, they are for real. I hope the Phillies struggles are real and not a mirage and that is the beginning of the fall of the empire, but I’m not hopeful yet.

He was missing before but they were still scoring runs, though.

He was injured way back when in the series where we played them. I think missing Polanco is huge for them as well. Plus the guys are getting cold. Whatever it is, I hope it continues.

by souldrummer on Jun 1, 2010 9:25 AM EDT up reply actions

The Phillies lineup sans Rollins

Victorino
Castro (no Rollins)
Utley
Howard
Werth
Polanco
Ibanez
Ruiz
Pitcher

Sorry, just because they dont’ have Rollins doesn’t mean they can’t score runs. I’d say it’s pretty pathetic that they can’t score runs just because one person in THIS lineup isn’t there. I guess that would mean that Rollins deserved the big contract, not Howard.

This season I will expect the worst but I will be prepared for 'worser'.

by LOUtheMETandNATSfan on Jun 1, 2010 9:36 AM EDT up reply actions

I think both Utley and Rollins are more valuable than Howard.

The one stat of Howards that is really outstanding is his RBI’s which are completely dependent on the lineup in front of him.

I think they believe that too.

Ian Desmond...because the future starts now for the Washington Nationals.

by souldrummer on Jun 1, 2010 7:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Polanco's out now too.

Both are out and that’s key. Lineups are strong when they are strong top to bottom so that everybody sees good pitchers and you can’t toe tap around the power bats. When they feature 3 out machines like they did when they were sitting Werth and had two players injured they are not the same team.

Ian Desmond...because the future starts now for the Washington Nationals.

by souldrummer on Jun 1, 2010 7:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I saw Atlanta competing. I expected them to be in second in the east...

I feel like they ar pulling out all the stops for Cox’s final year as manager, including getting Heyward into the Super Two category…which helps Strasburg avoid it by a wider margin.

ATL has the pitching and fundamentals to take the wild card.

I hope the Nats don’t touch Oswalt

In 2010:
Monday Apr 5 PHI L Halladay Lannan 41,290

In 2009:
Tuesday, Jun 23 BOS L Delcarmen Tavarez 41,517 —
Wednesday, Jun 24 BOS L Lester Stammen 41,530 —-
Thursday, Jun 25 BOS W Zimmermann Smoltz 41,985 +

Something I noticed...

When I looked at the June 4th game tickets on Stubhub. Some people were selling 25 tickets. I bet the Nats let the brokers buy up the tickets for the Pirates game too. At 10 dollars per ticket, it would completely be worth it to buy 25 tickets for a few games and then score HUGE with the magic game.

by RoscoeNats on Jun 1, 2010 10:42 AM EDT up reply actions

Capitalism at its finest

Looking for just “one” ticket proved impossible for “really good” seats. A call to Stub Hub rectified that, but trying to do the same online was impossible. After I had made the call, I did find single seat tickets available…They just weren’t advertised as single seat tickets. They were grouped on the web site.

Got my tickets

Section 129 via Stubhub last night. First time in my life that I have ever felt like $350 for a pair of tickets was a good deal (but the other tickets around the section were selling for at least that PER ticket). Thankfully, I was also able to get rid of my June 4 tickets at face (would go to both, but only so much babysitter availability).
Debating whether to go with a friend or take my 6 year old daughter, who is a baseball fan (although has no idea about the significance of Strasburg). I think it would be kind of cool (and crossing my fingers that he will live up to the hype and it will mean anything) for her to be able to say in 20 years, “My dad took me to Strasburg’s first game.”

Always feel bad spending that kind of money on myself.
