Game 53: HE WENT!
- Best play: Cristian Guzman (-21.9%) gets a bases-loaded force at home to preserve the Nationals' one-run lead in the bottom of the 9th (+26.4%)
- Also best play: Ian Desmond (+27.8%) has a bases-loaded single to score the tying run in the 9th (+26.4%)
- Worst play: Bill Hohn apparently wasn't watching when Berkmann couldn't hold up on strike 3, allowing him to get the game winner on the next pitch (-73.4%)
- OBP: Ryan Zimmerman (+26.4%) has 4 walks, but Adam Dunn (+36.3%) only has two.

Thankfully I didn't watch this on TV. Then I might have gotten really, really mad.
I still think that if you’re at a point where the Disastros have made 2 errors, blown a save, and allowed you to come back after that awful start and you are blaming a check swing call on the road (where umps are loathe to end the game) we have a problem. Good teams put the hammer down on things they can control, like Hammer’s AB, NO SQUEEZE (really, AGonz has been a decent pinch hitter, Riggles), Zim’s D, earlier situation where we left bases loaded, singles only from the closer and a lot of other stuff.
They had more than enough opportunities to win this game.
14 errors in April.
29 errors in May. Errors aren’t everything but they do tell a tale. We’ve had multiple games we’ve lost where errors contributed.

Yeah, OK
but the fact of the matter is
HE WENT!

Okay, he went
But it was still a nice piece of hitting after he struck out
Now both teams have cause to hate Bill Hohn.
Bill Hohn could use some time off
Gary Darling can go with him
Relax, all right? Don't try to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.
Waiting for MLB.tv to archive, then I'm screencapping....

Yep, Dave. The starting pitching was awful as well. They had more than enough opportunities to win this game and declined. The ump stuff kind of balances out. Certainly the umps hurt the Astros yesterday, not so much because I thought that we wouldn’t have won, but the entire tone of the series was changed by them having to go to their bullpen and our being able to save ours. Peaches still hasn’t pitched in the series yet.

+11 from me too
Bad game all round. Made more insane by the fact we had plenty of chances to win it. Good teams put bad teams away even when they play bad.
Ian Desmond is my hero!
Dudes, you are missing the point
the runners left on base and bad pitching are indirect causes for the loss… but you can point squarely at the umps gaff and say conclusively that if that had not happened the nats win this ballgame… you cant compare that to not getting some hits with runners in scoring position, because that IS part of the game.
When the officals should not get to decide what happens on the field. They are there to tell us what happens… nothing else. The players cannot control an ump blowing a call, its totally unfair.
totally agree
okay the Nats didn’t hit with RISP, the starting pitching wasn’t great, but the bottom line is that they were leading by one, with the count 1-2 (?) on Berkman and he CLEARLY WENT! It wasn’t even one of those “iffy” ones where the batter sorta went around. This was clear as day. His bat completely crosses home plate, and then some. If that call is made correctly, the Nats win, no ifs, ands, or buts. that’s how i see it, it isn’t about things balancing out. we played like crap, but we still had the chance to win it, and a BLOWN CALL is why we lose. I hope that ump gets fired. what a pathetic call. You’re an absolute idiot if you can’t see he went around.
I think what Martins...
Is trying to say is that this team is now 6-12 in the last 18. The umpires did’nt lose those 12 games………………Something is still really wrong with this team.
I didn’t read that into what Martins wrote, but it is a sobering stat.
the good news is that the schedule eases up what might be their most difficult stretch of the season.
And the fact that they are only a game under 500 with Jeeezus about to appear before the multitudes is heartening.
Speaking of which, yesterday I saw a fancy SUV painted up real pretty with scripture and what not… also it claimed that May something, 2011 is the date of The Apocalypse; so maybe the Nats should go ahead and make that trade for Oswalt..
Also...is that 2 of the last 3 blown save opportunities.
It was a nice comeback and an unfortunate end.
Whatever.
They’re also 5-5 in their last ten. They’re 1-1 in their last two. Oh, yeah, and they’ve played 17 of their last 22 games on the road.
These things happen. Nobody expects the team to sail very far above .500; the fact that they are as close to .500 as they are when they are clearly treading water and waiting on reinforcements is a very comforting thought.

The formula for the Nats is tread water on the road + winning homestands + beating teams you should beat.
The biggest thing is can they bounce back from last night’s effort and given themselves a chance to win the series.

just saw the clip
and Im happy to say that it looks like the dam is breaking RE: these atrocious umpires. I dont care if a botched call goes for my team or against it, because ultimately it hurts the integrity of the game
Didn't the Rays win that game, though?
That would be the difference between the Rays and the Nats.
