Washington Nationals Win 7-5 Over Pittsburgh Pirates In Quiet Nats Park.

Tonight's Top 5:

5. Brad Lincoln Meet Adam Dunn. Dunn, Mr. Lincoln: The Pirates had their '06 1st Round pick Brad Lincoln debuting tonight in Nationals Park, one night after Nats' right-hander Stephen Strasburg made his first Major League start in front of a packed house of over 40,000 fans. There were about 22,000 less fans in attendance tonight, but the 18,000 who were there saw the Pirates' prospect make the mistake of issuing a two-out walk early in the first that gave Adam Dunn an RBI opp with two down and one on. Then Lincoln made another mistake, challenging the Nats' 30-year-old left-handed-hitting slugger with a 94mph 1-1 fastball that Dunn sent out to right center over the out-of-town scoreboard for a 2-0 Nationals' lead after one.

4. Roger Bernadina Wants To Play!!: Roger Bernadina doubled to lead off the Nats' second but three outs later was stranded at third. Bernadina's second double of the game off Bucs' right-hander Brad Lincoln scored Josh Willingham from first after Hammer's one-out single, and Bernadina scored himself when Ian Desmond lined his own RBI double to center to make it 5-4 Nats a half-inning before the Pirates tied it at 5-5. Bernadina singled and stole a base in the eighth to finish the night 3 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI.

Star-divide

3. Lannan Leaves Early:  86 pitches in 4.2 IP? John Lannan struggled on the mound Wednesday night, walking 3 and giving up 10 hits to the Pirates before being lifted early having surrendered a run in the fifth to blow the second lead the Nats' had given their left-handed starter. Pittsburgh gets just one extra base hit off Lannan, a leadoff double by Lastings Milledge in the fifth, and a run-scoring single by the opposing pitcher Brad Lincoln scores Milledge and chases Lannan with the score tied at 5-5 after five.

2. Off Carrasco's Stirrups!!: After Nats' right-hander Drew Storen gets a double play from Bucs' catcher Jason Jaramillo to erase a leadoff single by Lastings Milledge and end the top of the seventh, the Nats take the lead in the bottom of the frame when Cristian Guzman singles off Pirates' right-hander D.J. Carrasco and scores when Ryan Zimmerman hits a low-liner off the relievers high socks and into the outfield in short right for Zimmerman's 34th RBI of 2008. 6-5 Nats, and Storen gets the win after a scoreless inning of relief by Tyler Clippard and...

1. Let's Go CAPPS!!!: For the second night in a row the Nats call on Matt Capps and the closer locks it down, earning his 20th save of 2010 and giving Drew Storen his second major league win, (W, 2-0). After blowing 3 of 4 save opportunities, Capps has converted three of four to calm some fears. The right-hander has, however, allowed 18 hits and 6 ER in his last 7.0 IP. At least the DC Faithful can stop the "Do we have to replace Capps" talk for now...

Nats

I think the Strasburg hype can give this team a nice little boost. I don’t think there’s anyway they make the playoffs this year (the division is too good) but I think they do in the next 3 years. They need some more impact free agents and the only way they are going to get that is if fans start showing up for more than just the Strasburg games. This team has some great young pitching coming up the ranks and I wouldn’t be surprised to see them compete soon.

Great recap by the way!!

Thanks, John. I think by the end of the year...

When Stras, Zimmermann, Wang, Detwiler and others are back and healthy we’ll get s good idea of how close the Nats are to really compete…

Absolutely

It’s pretty exciting times to be a Nats fan. Even more so in about 3 years when Harper is called up (maybe 5 years), this team can make some serious noise.

by John McMuffin on Jun 10, 2010 10:18 AM EDT up reply actions

Of the top of his head, Kasten said Harper could be up in two years as an OFer...

But 2-3 years is too long to wait to address the Nats’ outfield needs. The Sox are said to be willing to unload salary, and MLB.com’s Bill Ladson pointed to Carlos Quentin as a RF option…and Rizzo has history with him…

2 years?

That would be awesome. The Nats would be the most exciting team in baseball. Agreed, they need to find a temporary plug for an outfield bat. Quentin is a good option.

I'm still slow your roll on Bryce Harper.

He’s got to get signed and playing before I get excited about him or still start to dream about his progress. He’s no Marrero, but we’ve already had one high schooler break our hearts.

You take it one game at a time.

I don’t think they are going to win the division, but it’s how long they can be in the conversation that matters. First goal is win tonight. Next goal is get back to .500. Next goal is try to get a winning streak. Goal after that is to get a winning record in the division. Goal after that is a division race. Goal after that is playoffs.

I really don’t like thinking too far ahead. I wouldn’t be suprised if some of that, combined with the weird park, is what led to poor play against the Disastros.

A competent bullpen, though, is the greatest potential upgrade between this year and last year’s. I doubt it will happen, but it would be wonderful to get some winning ABs against an early appearing Hanrahan tonight.

Oswalt

The Nats are one starter away from being in contention this year…….Nieves needs to be replaced. And it would be nice if NYJER and Bernadina could get their averages up to .280. The team has got to start getting 9-10 hits every game.

by artistfork on Jun 10, 2010 11:57 AM EDT up reply actions

Nyjer and Nieves

Is there anything the Nationals can do to upgrade CF and catcher? IMHO Morgan is a back-up at best and Nieves is not a major league player. When you have the sort of pitching staff we have right now they hurt the team bad.
Nyjer has gone from T-Plush to downright T-Raggedy. His fielding is shaky at best. His arm is horrible. His throwing accuracy is horrible. His decision making both at the plate and in the field is horrible. I’m no big fan of Jason Maxwell but at this point, if a trade can’t be made, I’d rather see him in RF and Bernadina in CF than the current arrangement.
Nieves? At the plate he’s a "pitcher like" automatic out. (Yeah, he got the sac fly last night, whoop-de-damn-do.) He can’t throw to second without one hopping it, and now he can’t even “block”. His handling of the pitchers seems to be average at best.
How often should Pudge be behind the plate without being putting him at risk for another injury? I’m thinking no more than 60% of the time. God only knows what it would mean if he went down again. I know that the Nats don’t have anyone in the minors (other than Burke) to replace Nieves, so it seems like a trade is their only option and I have no idea who, if anyone, might be available.
It seems to me that if the Nats have any Cinderella like hopes for this year these two issues have got to be addressed.

by PerryMason on Jun 10, 2010 10:06 AM EDT reply actions

Agreed

Looks like the Cubs are probably going to be sellers this year so maybe check to see what it’ll take to get Soto off their hands? Also, Marlon Byrd has been great this year and he’s relatively cheap by the looks of his contract (3 yr, $15 mil) for his production. Maybe even Fukudome who’s been playing pretty good this year. That could potentially fix both those holes you referrenced.

by John McMuffin on Jun 10, 2010 10:16 AM EDT up reply actions

Don't think the Nats will take another chance on Byrd...,

He didn’t perform here at all…

Fukudome’s name came up early this season, but he’s probly too expensive for the Nats…

Oh wow

I forgot Byrd was on the Nats. How about the O’s? They have a plethora of young OFs. Maybe see if they will part with Pie. He plays a great CF and he’s starting to hit also. Shouldn’t take much to get him.

Remember, the Nats planned on having Flores and Pudge splitting time...

So they’re already on Plan B, and I don’t know if Flores is going to make it back. But Nieves was bound to be exposed when given regular time.

As for Morgan, he’s supposed to play strong defense and get on base, and is doing neither, so the long search for a CFer might not be over…

You don’t like Bernadina in CF?

by PerryMason on Jun 10, 2010 10:32 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm fine with Bernie there, and he's more traditionally suited to center...

In terms if his speed and offensive output, and it would open up right for a bigger bat…see Quentin, Carlos above…

Carlos Quentin

Can anyone tell me anything about Quentin? His numbers at the plate say he’s been struggling this year and last.

by PerryMason on Jun 10, 2010 11:10 AM EDT up reply actions

I love the idea of Bernie going to CF. That's where he belongs.

With the pitching coming along the way it has I’m hoping and it a dream of a hope, that we go after Werth next year. Now that would be a right fielder…

by Berndaddy on Jun 10, 2010 11:17 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree that these are needs.

I still think the biggest need is RF. You address RF and then things get much more competitive in CF. We have little power in our lineup outside of 3,4,5, Guzman and Nyjer have no homeruns. Bernadina’s two happened in one miraculous game. Nieves and Pudge have one apiece. Desmond has 4 and that’s fine for me.

The move is to make a trade for a RF, include Nyjer or Bernie or JMax or Willie Harris in the deal as a supplementary piece, and either have greater competition or Bernie or Nyjer in center. We have no need for 3 left handed waterbug outfielders. Upgrade RF, and you are also upgrading CF.

As for catcher, we’ve had awful luck with Flores and Nieves playing even worse than he did last year. If Nieves plays subreplacement for the whole year, you make a minor move in the offseason to address this. Coste’s Tommy John surgery, Burke’s injury, and especially Jesus Flores continued struggles set them back and I think that they will be reluctant to address this via trade. They have catching prospects in Norris and Nieto (I think) who are in the pipeline, and I don’t think that they want to trade any assets to address catcher.

On the flip side, Natsfarm focuses on box scores and internet available data.

Nationalsprospects.com gets props for getting some eyewitness report data. We don’t really have much eyewitness coverage from Hagerstown or Harrisburg, although Harrisburg and Syracuse have more newspaper coverage and potential local bloggers that we don’t link to as much.

The other place to start with minor league prospects is Sickels here on the Minor League Ball site.
He catalogs every team’s prospects and offers an overall season overview.

The two places I go are Natsfarm.com and nationalsprospects.com

I know that a lot of SBN sites do handle minor league recaps and stuff. I read a lot of the minor league box scores. Personally, I’d actually like to see different Nats sites focus on wha they do best. We’ve got Gamethreads and a community bent to Nats news from Patrick. Natsfarm can handle the farm. Natsinsider can handle some reporting with Nationals Journal and Goessling Game supplementing. I get frustrated when I see everybody trying to do gamethreads when Fed Baseball is the leader in the house.

At 6-2, 200 lbs. I don’t consider Bernadina a “waterbug” outfielder. He’s not hitting homers now (though I do think that could develop) but it’s hitting the ball in the gaps. He’s been a very pleasant surprise that for me offsets the demise of Mr. Plush.

by PerryMason on Jun 10, 2010 12:05 PM EDT up reply actions

He has hit 2 HR in his career.

Those were both in that Mets game. Doubles are nice and he’s not the poor man’s Juan Pierre that Nyjer is, but that lack of power doesn’t play for me in RF. He’s hitting well this series against the Pirates. I want to see him have a good month against some of the weaker competition and show me he can do it against divisional foes.

If he learns how to lay off that breaking ball and take some more walks, he can certainly be a major leaguer. I just think the bat doesn’t play in RF and he needs to be a CF.

Sadly, he ain't the only backup catcher in the majors hitting below the Mendoza line.

Catchers are tough to find, which is why some, but not me, criticize the Nats for moving Harper to RF.

It ain’t just his hitting that makes him a liability.

I know that a lot of others see issues with his game calling.

He has thrown out some runners, although he had a bad game last night. Some of that was on Lannan too. I’d probably be more down on Nieves if I had a better look at him.

Perhaps chalk it up to Charlie and Dave bias that I consider him a replacement level catcher instead of a subreplacement level catcher.

Crafty Wil Nieves, giving Charlie and Dave Tony Vega and the band to give the home radio crew salsa colored glasses to view his performance.

Things of beauty

1 – “Ryan Zimmerman charges on a bunt by Neil Walker, but the throw to first is late.”
Replay showed he was out, but either way that was a great play by The Mighty Zimm!

2 – “Ronny Cedeno. Roger Bernadina and Cristian Guzman almost collide but Bernie catches Jason Jaramillo’s foul pop.”
Very athletic play by both Guz and Bernie. The timing of Guz’s slide and the hurdle in full stride by Bernie was spectacular and looked like a stunt performed The Blue Angels!

The schedule

The Nats finally took advantage of the soft spot in the schedule. If’ they’d played like they did last night against a better team it would have been a loss. It’s so nice to not play a good game and still be able to get a win. Having Livo out there to go for a sweep before they head to Cleveland is a whole lot better than having him out there to try to avoid losing the series to a bad team and thus losing any momentum generated by the “The Game”.
