Speaking of……… Joe West, meet Frank Robinson….

Jimmie Lee Solomon, who has overseen baseball’s on-field operations — including MLB’s umpires — since 2005, has been reassigned, according to a New York Times report. Solomon will now be in charge of minor league operations and MLB’s academies around the U.S. and in Puerto Rico, a fairly substantial demotion.
Commissioner Bud Selig said Frank Robinson will take over Solomon’s former duties

Makes me want to boo the directors of those movies as much as I want to boo the likes of Martin and Atilano. 28 Days at least tried to work around it, referring to them as the infected (and with the activist scene in the very beginning)… In other words, they weren’t zombies, but people infected with rage

After Diary of the Dead, I'm not so sure I want to go see it.....

But I know that “Survival of the Dead” was released recently…. Technically, it could be considered the sixth of the Romero movies.

Night of the Living Dead
Dawn of the Dead
Day of the Dead
Land of the Dead
Diary of the Dead
Survival of the Dead

Night will always hold a special place in my heart because it was the original. The original Dawn of the Dead (not the bastardized remake with Sarah Polley, Ving Rhaimes, and fast zombies) will probably always be my favorite, though. I liked Day, and thought Land was kind of underrated. Diary was pretty terrible, though.

by bluelineswinger on Jun 12, 2010 8:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Sorry, but I also love the Sarah Polley version.

by MickS on Jun 12, 2010 8:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I love Sarah Polley

But I just didn’t like that movie much…. I think it was mainly the fast zombies that bugged me, but it just lacked the overall quality of the original anyway. In case it wasn’t obvious, I’m kind of obsessed with zombie flicks, and even zombie literature. However, I call most zombie flicks exactly what they are…. flicks. Not really any artistic value, but fun to watch. The original Dawn is the one zombie movie I’ve ever seen that I refer to as a film. Well acted, well directed, had a lot of social commentary, but it didn’t go so far that it was something I’d consider preachy.

Sarah Polley is hot. So that probably colored my opinion.

by MickS on Jun 12, 2010 9:18 PM EDT up reply actions

My brother actually got me the compendium book of that for Christmas this past year

The one that I’m really waiting for (heard a ton of rumors, actually) is World War Z. I’d heard they were going to be making a movie. Best zombie book ever. Oddly enough, written by Max Brooks… Son of Mel Brooks.

For anyone else interested in the actual zombie literature area, I’d highly recommend Day by Day: Armageddon by J.L. Bourne….. Perhaps even better than that was the two book “Dying to Live” series by Kim Paffenroth.

Anyway, enough about zombies, but it’s not like the game tonight is particularly exciting… unless you’re a fan of the Tribe

Seemed like they (England) controlled the flow of play

But we actually had a shot at winning it. Sick move by Altidore to create that scoring chance midway through the second half, but England’s goalie didn’t botch that one and made a pretty nice save.

Still, I was hoping we could pull a draw out of that. Slovenia and Algeria aren’t slouches by any means, but they’re both teams that we should probably beat. Getting a draw against England gives us a fantastic shot at going through the group stage (which is expected) and actually a decent shot at getting by them on goal differential if we can win one of those games by multiple goals.

Alberto Gonzalez hits for Morgan, two out...and he pops the first pitch up to end the game....

One pitch...now Stras has to avoid the sweep...

No pressure, kid!!

Better pitching matchup tomorrow night.

Really, the big old fail was last night. The bad defense and the wasted outs early put Atilano in a bad way. He didn’t have it, but they didn’t give him any help. Tonight was their ace going and outplaying our AAA guy. JD Martin is not going to be a part of this rotation in August in all likelihood.

You’d just like to see Olsen and Detwiler get healthy sooner rather than later. Our rotation has issues and we’re not close enough to contention to deserve the moves to address that.

Agree, 10 games over .500 get Oswalt and go for it...

Now it’s a bad idea…

Keep building from within….

A feeble effort for a feeble team tonight.

Please play better for Strasburg tomorrow, boys.

I don't think so.

I think Riggleman has done a good job of minimizing the losing streaks and keeping this team on an even keel. The roster is better than last year, but has some clear weaknesses. We’re not really a contender until one of the homegrown 2B prospects (Espinosa, Kobernus, or Lombardozzi) is ready for the big club to replace Guz and Kennedy. We’re not really a contender until we have some thump in RF. Our starting rotation has made one significant upgrade, and can make others should Detwiler and Zimmermann show signs.

The proper expectations are 75+ wins. You’d love for them to get to 82-80 and have their best record since they’ve moved to the District.

I said 70-72 before the season....so 75+ would be a big improvement year-to-year over the 100-loss seasons...

I can't remember what I was saying. I think I was probably at 72.

My expectations have been raised somewhat. Now I’d like to see 75+, but their goal should be remaining competitive in the divisional race while getting 82 wins. 82 wins the right way would be better than 2005 and would be a real momentum builder for the season ticket base and optimism.

Not a bad move.

At least US showed up to today against Union Jack. That is a balm for the wounds.

No such thing as a garbage goal

Looks like a line drive in the box score. It’s the soccer equivalent of the hockey adage “put the puck on the net and good things happen.”

True that.

Our goalie stood tall. Theirs stunk like last week’s fish and chips. Be great if that goal was the difference between first and second place in the group.

WTF?

Two spots hitting .163 and .170 … those ARE pitchers’ batting averages!

by plebescite on Jun 12, 2010 9:12 PM EDT reply actions

I have to believe that some people need to be held out

Pudge can’t play every game so occasionally we have to live with Nieves sucking the life out of our lineup. I don’t get the Willie Harris batting 6th though

by d_c_guy on Jun 12, 2010 9:13 PM EDT up reply actions

They need another catcher ...

There has to be a blocked prospect like Jason Castro that is better than Nieves?

by plebescite on Jun 12, 2010 9:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Nope.

You’ve got guys like Rooney hitting like that in AAA. Maldonado, Burke and the whole bunch of those guys can’t hit.

Really, the move with this team is to go to the park when they’re at home and play better and to go to Potomac or Hagerstown to check out the prospects when they’re on the road. Bummer that I don’t have a car to execute that plan.

He's never really going to start Nieves and he wants to rest Hammer's back.

So he puts Harris in left field. He also likes LRLR kind of stuff. This game is kind of like his olive branch to the benchwarmers. They aren’t really taking advantage of it and Kennedy and Willie Harris deserve to find themselves deeper on the pines. At this point, Gonzalez is more deserving of starts than Kennedy. At least he’ll catch the ball.

Does it matter??

With Riggleman’s lineups they will probably lose even with Strasburg.

Trust me, the best lineup will be on the field tomorrow...

Gonzo at thrid

Morse in right. Zim at DH. not sure about your “best lineup” comment.

Riggleman calls Dunn into his office...

…“Hey Dunn, do you like DH?”
“Naw, coach. I’m working on my comedy routine with the parade of opposing hitters that arrives after those errors by my quote unquote ‘defensive’ replacement on my right side tonight.”

I came up late 'cause I had to cook for my grandmother tonight.

And when I finally arrived it was all over but the shoutin’. If they want people to show up every night, they have to show up. First inning errors and early deficits ain’t going to make this team something more than the Strasburgettes.
