OMG, Wander Nunez signed................

uh,…….had no idea he was the Bryce Harper of the DR. Was drafted by Philly as an 18 -year old high school Freshman, there are mutterings about personality issues, but didn’t sign…….supposedly hits 500 ft. wood bat home runs……. well, a couple…

Quote of Day Posted: 6/23/09 “Tough call. If he goes back to the DR as a 19 year old, he’d still be younger than most DR 16 year olds.”

Tim Foli guest on the radio pre-game game

Apparently in the minor leagues, you’re evaluating people to see if they can play in the bigs. Even “be a championship player.” Huh.
“Desi’s BEEN a shortstop. He just has to refine his game… be more consistent.”
Talented, great arm, “future is bright for him.”
“Bernie’s a good one… only doubt is that he hasn’t played that much.”
Eckstein has him being more aggressive at the plate than he was at AAA. “Has pop.” Great with the glove, right is “probably his third-best position in the OF,” but he’ll do well at it with practice.
“I have no life. Baseball’s the only thing I do.” Apparently considered retirement earlier, wife let/made him keep coaching.

Well, the "Dead Pelican Cup" in Chicago hasn't gone very well for the Cubs.

Hope Nats/O’s series is better.

Wonder if Zambrano is on his way out of Chicago after today. Got into a shouting match with Derek Lee and didn’t come out after the 1st inning. Bad clubhouse, I suspect. The Little Blue Train is off the tracks and into the ditch. Cubs need to be sellers, big time. Maybe the Nats can get something from them before the deadline.

Interesting note, the “Crosstown Classic Cup” as the Chicago series is known is sponsored by BP. That’s kind of a bad sign, isn’t it?

LOL! Reminds me of '99 when Riggs got fired.

Lance Johnson got picked off in the 9th inning of a game in AZ. The Cubs were approx 5 games up in the standings at the time and in first place. (Early in the season.) Johnson claimed he was injured. Riggs called him out and the two had to be separated in the clubhouse. The entire coaching staff went to Ed Lynch (I cringe at the mere mention of his name) and begged for him to release Johnson. Lynch wouldn’t do it because he wanted something in return. The team started to suck, knew the Manager had no teeth because Lynch took them and went into freefall.

The lunatics began to run the asslyum, Lynch canned Riggs to save his own job and the rest is history. GM’s need to back the Mgr up. Hendry understands this, but it will be interesting to see how this Cubbie drama plays out.

He seems to be a sensitive guy and I think that the better at bats are linked to the great glove play.

heard C& D interview Riggs who knows about the kid.

(An errant double-decker autohauler made a grievous error off Rte 50 and onto the Parkway where no trucks are allowed. When he got to the first bridge he couldn’t go under, he had to stop. And the rest of us sat…with engines off for the duration until the could get his rig off the Parkway.)

The Orioles are such a mess.

You look at their pitching prospects and they should be better than ours. But Matusz has been a mess so far. I really think the lack of a bullpen and all of the losing has infected their starters heads.

The O's are going to most likely get a no brainer no. 1 pick next year.

They’ve started to draft better which was their primary problem. I don’t know how their minor league system compares to ours, but it was way ahead of ours when they had Wieters and Matusz in the system. I really feel the Orioles last place in the AL status is due to a bunch of bad luck. Gonzalez going down vs. Capps being a plus closer. Roberts going down vs. minimal injury time for Zim, Dunn, Hammer.

It's Riggles loyalty to veterans.

I think part of this is related to his desire to maintain a positive rep in the clubhouse. Doesn’t want the veterans griping about skip. Willie Harris may have some clubhouse clout and he’s going to try to keep giving him at bats if he’s on the roster. Riggles seems to be constitutionally incapable of transforming a respected vet from Willie Harris to Wily Taveras.

Was eating at the bar of a new place on 8th and watching the game.

Fun to hear to the 4 or 5 us (more than me and Mrs D!!) watching the game and cheering on hits and RBI and excellent catches at the wall. If you happen to be on 8th street SE before a game some night, I highly recommend The Chesapeake Room.

They're kind of schizophrenic.

Zim, Morgan, Desi are capable of spectacular and really bonehead errors. Dunn is just hands of stone but has been better than expected.

His UZR/150 is only like -2 or so.

That’s nearly league-average. Dunn is not-bad as a 1B.

I'm very, very curious in how UZR is composed for 1B.

Sometimes he’s a big target and saves throws, but there are times when guys beat him to the bag or he lacks range or he drops a key ball.

Basically, I'm very down on our upper minors right now.

I don’t know the rest of the league well enough to know what budget downgrades at 1B are available. I just don’t see power arms in the upper regions of our minors and I’d like to move Dunn to get an extra one. Give me a killer prospect pitcher who will be MLB ready by 2012 and some supplementary position pieces and I would be satisfied.

I don't have a problem with taking out Storen.

The one that concerned me was burning through the low leverage guys so quickly with the 3 run lead. Would have been nice to give Slaten one more batter.

Yeah, it's a bad night from Clippard

stuff happens. he’s got a violent delivery, and is a high ball pitcher to begin with. on occasion he’s going to leave balls up and get hit.

it’s just tough that Riggleman felt like he had to go to the pen in the 5th with a 6-0 lead, when all his starter had done to that point was throw ground balls.

Guz was awful, awful, awful. And there really isn’t but so much we can do about it. AGonz will reveal his offensive failing if played too much. Kennedy seems determined to show as little as possible in his minimal playing time.

Certainly true.

Bad defense is always a problem and this team plays bad defense. The positive side is that one place where we got great defense is centerfield. The real tragedy of this game is that had we held on to win this would have been a great opportunity for the fan base to reembrace Nyjer and for him to stop pressing and move forward in finding the middle ground between his out of body experience last year and his awful start this year.

That's kind of why I'm not getting but so so depressed outside of the Clippard thing.

I want us to play hard, win more games than last year, and see progress with our assets. Probably the one place where we have depth and redundancy on the farm is middle infield. AA, high A, and low A, all have middle infielders with the potential to be major leaguers in Espinosa, Lombardozzi, and Kobernus.

No, I don't believe in them but so much.

I’m just saying that I feel 2B is one of the positions where we have something and have some redundancy. I didn’t believe in Desmond at all before last year. He was always hurt and his stock had fallen a bunch.

Lombardozzi’s OPS is up to .779 for the year. He has progressed a level each year and I see no reason why he won’t get a shot at AA next year if he keeps up his progress.

Kobernus is way to early to tell one way or another. He has struggled with injuries at times. He’s in low A. right now. He has a whopping total of 215 professional at bats.

Unless we sign our top 4 picks in the draft, there are only 2 players that we should value in our farm system(excluding injured players). Norris and Espinosa.

That seems a bit pessimistic to me as well.

No, there’s not a lot of guys besides those guys who are blue chips today, but it is possible that Marrero or Burgess makes something out of themselves and at least stay in play a bit longer.

Hagerstown’s roster is a bit more intriguing and Destin Hood has not been bad.

Are you down on Eury Perez? Eury Perez is not hitting but so great but he’s supposed to be solid defensively and will be playing in the futures game. There are a lot of tools in Hagerstown’s outfield, and I am not counting those guys (Hood, Ramirez, Perez, and Higley out).

The low minors guys are young kids and it’s very pessimistic to give them no hope.

because Zim, Morgan, Bernadina, Desmond are pieces that they consider potential core pieces and are young as well as the young pitching staff. Guzman is a fair part of the age. Dunn is part of the age and may not be back.

Old in body.

Young in mind. Certainly not someone you could consider a mature veteran player who is easy to manage. I know Morgan is oldish and is not likely to improve but so much at this stage in his career. He is still learning, however, to handle the responsibility of playing a high profile defensive position in a more visible market than Pittsburgh. So there are some managerial challenges that Morgan presents.

But, yes, Morgan is not a prospect and he really shouldn’t be given the benefit of the doubt over Bernadina beyond this year.

I don't have a problem with Riggleman this year as the manager.

I have a problem if Riggleman is allowed to manage without parameters and if he’s kept on past next year if the team doesn’t improve. Rizzo needs to gently express concern about his management of a young important asset tonight named Tyler Clippard. If he doesn’t take that reining in well, then he’s not a guy you want for but so long. If he does take that reining in better, then he’s going to potentially be a two year option.

Some of the things we don’t like about him are a function of his roster. It’s more tempting to go smaller ball when you’ve only got three power hitters. Interleague ball has not been his finest hour, though.

He’s thinking in the back of his mind about the Livo game when he left Livo in too long against the Tigers.

You have to believe that Riggleman has a lot of say on who is in his dugout.

I'm really not but so sure.

The Lannan thing made me feel that Rizzo is in charge more than Riggles. I also think that part of the reason why Rizzo wanted Riggles is that he would be more pliable or more firable than a more ballyhooed candidate while he was building his own credibility.

Managers are often overrated I feel.

Who are these magical managers who have all of this great impact on their teams? They can keep a clubhouse neutral and even keeled, I suppose. But the Nats have some professionals in Zim, Dunn, Hammer, and Livo who will help keep their team from going off the rails emotionally.

First, I want someone who is going to maintain a pretty even keel and treat his players as men. I think Riggles does a fine job with that. Then, I look for first, do no harm. Riggles seems determined to do harm sometimes, but it’s not always easy to manage when you have a full deck and you want to make sure that you respect veterans in an effort to treat his players as men.

by miseenjeu on Jun 25, 2010 11:09 PM EDT reply actions

The bullpen really isn't in trouble tomorrow.

Unless Livo gets absolutely lit up, which is certainly a possibility in the AL and in Camden Yards. Remember we used a lot of guys but most of them barely through pitches. Slaten was barely used. Burnett was barely used. Capps was barely used. Batista can pitch until his arm falls out because he’s an old depreciating asset. They’ve got plenty of arms, which is why Riggles wasn’t scared of using them with an 8 man bullpen. The problems is taking Slaten out early and leaving Clippard in too long.

Everyone could tell that Clippard was done. He should have gone to Peralta and if Peralta loses it’s just not your day. We’re a young team and you just can’t burn Peaches out.
