Nationals News: Does anyone actually think the Nats will be buyers?
Mike Rizzo reportedly expressed interest in Dan Haren and Carlos Quentin, but Quentin isn't available. Rizzo didn't want to describe the team as buyer or seller, but it should be pretty clear that they aren't going to be buyers...
The Nats signed another college senior, undrafted free agent Ryan Demmin. He went 2-1 with a 1.14 ERA for the Mankato Moondogs.
Rizzo wants his team to get "younger, better, more athletic" and always wants more pitching. He has made a list of untouchable players, but declined to name any names.
The development surrounding Nationals Park has not been moving as planned, and some of the developments might not happen at all, as banks are hesitant to fork over large amounts of cash in this economy.
Phil Wood has penned a good piece on the Adam Dunn situation, and reports that Mike Rizzo has not been in communication with the White Sox regarding a trade.
Jim Riggleman's decision to move Ian Desmond to right field, and then switch players around, leaving Alberto Gonzalez in right, didn't make a lot of sense.
John Lannan got pounded at AA Harrisburg last night, giving up 10 hits and 6 runs in six innings.

Because Bernadina is a lefty.
We’re platooning Bernadina over Morgan. [sigh]
I should stay home tonight in protest, I suppose. But this sucker will probably be out there again waiting in line.

I was going to post Bernadina's splits...
…but he’s only had 18 plate appearances against lefties this year. I don’t know what he can or cannot do, but when do we get to the point where it’s worth finding out?

"Get to"???
He’s only just started getting to breaking balls outside and taking them the other way, I suppose, but I think he’s there already.

I believe most of the observers of this team here believe...
…Bernadina/Morse is better than Morgan/Morse if we have a jones to platoon with the Mickey Mouse club.
Regardless, I hope grizzy’s around tonight. Morse starting and Morgan being given an opportunity to hit against a lefty that’s been struggling lately could be good for both of his causes. He may be the last man standing in the Nyjer Morgan lobby, and I give him credit for standing by his guy.

I don't have it in me to wait in line tonight at this point.
I’m going to save my energy for the Strasburg start, do some more research, and follow Detwiler’s outing tonight.
It’s starting to feel like Lannan and Detwiler are campaigning for the next spot in the rotation. Be very interesting to see what happens in the rotation going forward.

I hope Riggleman is giving Morgan just enough rope to hang himself with.
I would rather he play Bernadina and give the Nats a better chance to win.
I don't know how much rope he can be given.
If we were sitting Desmond for two days (didn’t have a problem with that), it’s getting to the point that if there are no favorites on this team, Morgan get a night off against a tough lefty.
Of course, Riggles may want to consider that Santana’s a lefty who doesn’t possess a plus curve to get lefties out with. Righties have a .632OPS against him this year and lefties have a .785OPS against him. He’s becoming a rich man’s John Lannan in that regard.

I'll hazard a guess here that *if* Riggler is aware of those stats, he ignores them over having to have his fast-looking "Buntin' Man" batting leadoff...

Zow...what did Guz do to earn the 2-spot again?
I know Pudge has to take a day off, but seeing Nieves in the lineup always gives me a headache. Fortunately, Livo is veteran enough to throw his own pitches…and not listen to Nieves’ siren song of sliders.
My hope is Mr. Riggles will make the correct substitution after a few innings; Morgan out; Bernadina in with Morse still in RF.
"siren song of sliders"....WWJR??

Why Would They "Not" Be Buyers?
I do not think it is completely out of the question for the Nationals to be buyers this season….not necessarily for this year, but for the future. I am not that opposed to being sellers either, especially if it “does” make the Nationals “younger, better, and more athletic.”
It's hard to see them being buyers...
…because they are not the kind of place people wave no trade clauses for (Oswalt) and they lack a lot of resources in their upper minors. If Bryce Harper signs and develops, it seems that the focus of the team should be improvement for 2011 while getting younger (don’t resign Guzman) while focusing on contending for 2012.
On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park.
I did not mean buyers of Blue Chip types with trade clauses.....
of course not; I agree completely. However, solid up and coming players, already at the MLB level, may be available for a couple of minor league prospects. I don’t at all see the Nats being in the hunt for the Cliff Lee, Roy Oswalt, or Matt Kemp type of players.
The problem with those kind of moves is that we aren't competing in a vacuum...
…our farm system and our willingness to absorb salary doesn’t seem to be as high as other team’s who can make the minor move that means more to them because it gets them closer to playoffs this year.
If you’re a big fan of the Burnett + Milledge for Hanrahan + Morgan kind of move, I suppose those types of things can be done. I think they are more likely to be done in the offseason, though. For example, we could jump into the free agency pool to make a run at Crawford (who I would like) or Werth (who I wouldn’t) and then look to move one of the surplus outfielders like Morgan or Bernadina.
Sell Capps and sell Dunn is still my position depending on what you can get back for them. I wouldn’t even be averse to selling Capps to the Mets if we got a decent return. They seem to have this bad habit of sending Feliciano out against right handers in high leverage situations.
On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park.
I only move Capps and Dunn if you can get something substantial for them.
Realistically what do you think you can get for Capps? What is decent return? I don’t even know.
Patiently waiting for "next year" since 1971.

No, we do not have the prospects needed for a MAJOR coup
and we won’t pay the top dollar needed to get Oswalt or Haren
