Interesting ERA Note ... Run Support, What a Concept!

J.D. Martin: 3.35 ERA, 1-4 record
Cueto: 3.42 ERA, 8-2 record

Makes me wonder what the average run support differential is between the two.

I'm not such a fan of this lineup

But it’s clear that Riggles has his guys and he’s going to ride them all the way to whatever end. On the bright side, Kennedy isn’t starting. On the downside, Kennedy is still on the team!

FWIW, my lineup:

Guzman 2b; Bernardina cf; Zimmerman 3b; Dunn 1b; Willingham lf; Morse rf; Rodriguez c; Desmond ss; Martin, P.

The one player I might move is Desmond. If I thought he could handle a bat better, I’d have put Desmond in the #2 spot. But against the lefty a better move would be to shift him to #7 – either way, I’d like to see Desmond hit not having the pitcher behind him.

I good lineup will have the best OBP guys at the top

because they will get the most plate appearances and will, thus, be the ones whose outs will have the most ripple effect on runs scored.
The OBPs of the players in your lineup are:
.316
.343
.381
.373
.403
.312
.340
.333

This doesn’t seem terrible, but the guy at the lineup is sporting the second-worst OBP, which means he is creating many more outs than he should. How many? Well, consider that Morgan has to this point successfully reached base 121 times, while Willingham has reached 145 times, despite the fact that Morgan has 22 more PAs than Willingham. In other words, Morgan has made 49 more outs (with his bat, let’s not talk about his baserunning “skills”) even though he’s played in fewer games. Those 49 outs translate into over 15 runs lost so far this year because of Nyjer at the top of the order: nearly 2 games lost so far because of his perceived “speed” value.

Do I want Willingham at the top of the order? No, not really (his power will be wasted there) but the point is that OBP is an important concern.

I'm not saying Nyjer is useless

I’m saying that batting him at the top of the order is sub-optimal. The Nats are having lots of trouble scoring lately, and Nyjer’s not helping at all.

The question is whether the infield should have been drawn in so much

Double play depth made perfect sense there. Sure….. it was a pitcher at the plate, but the bases were loaded with nobody out. Double play depth tries to keep the game from getting out of hand, and it would have been a pretty easy turn at normal DP depth.

…if a fielder deflects a ball in the air, then it deflects off an ump, and then is caught (still on the fly), it doesn’t count as a catch, although the ball is still in play.

I'd say the ump was positioned correctly, actually

Generally positioned between the pitcher and second base. Usually keeps them out of the way but gives them a good line of sight on both sides of the bag at second.

You’re expectations seem to be out of line with the personnel. Stressing about Riggleman is accurate but not healthy. Stressing about 100 losses isn’t but so healthy. This year, we’ve made some positive steps by consolidating our 3-4-5, improving our bullpen, and adding Strasburg. 70-92 is still in play until further notice and represents small but significant improvement. I could live with more losses than that if it’s because we robbed someone with a Dunn trade and our younger players made large improvements. We have to remember the destination and evaluate whether there’s good process behind whatever results we have.

Danny's on schedule.

He’s not blowing away the Eastern League but he’s hitting well enough to merit starting out next year at AAA. Harrisburg’s lineup sucks as well so he may feel more pressure to perform. Espinosa is still on schedule to start at AAA next year and potentially earn a September callup if he can continue OPSing .750 plus at Syracuse. He’s got power and he’s got a decent glove. The Espinosa/Desmond affordable infield is still in play. We don’t need these guys to be awesome. We need them to be a step better than the infield that we’ve got right now at 1/3 of the price so that we can put 6-8M more bucks in the pitching staff or other supplementary players.

They tend to highlight your team’s weak points a bit more than when the team is playing well, but it’ll turn around. Remember how horrible last season was? Still ended with 7 wins in a row.

On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park.

by souldrummer on Jul 19, 2010 10:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I like JD, love his attitude.

The bullpen has been superior. I think Morse is better than people (llike Riggleman) give him credit for. I think he’s another Hammer. I think Strasburg is a good top of the rotation starter. I like Willingham, and Dunn but …

Facts are facts this looks like a .250 team? I’m not the only one who thinks so … I don’t do podcasts like Di Palma, Oliver and Nichols stating that the Nats should not play Guzman should play Gonzalez. Should trade Dunn. Joe Posnaski suggested they trade him for 2 B prospects before the season?

I am not negative about this team but you know we have to fact facts that some of these guys might actually be right … as fangraphs was so right on the money about Lannan?

Right now they don't look like it?

I suspect its Riggleman’s lineups. His desire to “respect” veterans keep them from getting rusty as opposed to trying to win?

This team’s average age is 28.5. Its a veteran club. Yet they are playing an awful lot like last year’s where there were a lot of prospects or pseudo prospects ….

Given the talent he had?

He seemed more like a scape goat. But he really didn’t try to stem the bleeding as much as he should have and he had his “man crushes” too. I thought Riggleman managed better last year as the ‘interim’ than he has this year as the official choice.

by plebescite on Jul 19, 2010 10:21 PM EDT up reply actions

What do you think he did better than that he's not doing now?

Seemed to me he was overaggressive on the bases, but things worked well and that made him look very good in comparison to Acta. I also think he was a steadying and professional influence. I still think he’s a steadying and professional influence.

I just got finished reading “Three Nights in August” which goes micro on a LaRussa series with the Cubs. I don’t agree with everything that I read in that book but I do know that there are a lot of decisions that are made due to human reasons that don’t make sense to us as fans.

There's a lot of stuff that I agree with you with.

Ok. I’m glad that you like JD. Do you believe that he will be a part of the rotation next year? Do you think our pitching will be a quality rotation if he is in the rotation?

I also think Morse should get to play more. If Dunn does get traded, he’d probably be the everyday first basemen and we’d really get a chance to see what he can or cannot do. Don’t really listen to the podcasts so I can’t comment on those. Oliver is Brian at Nats farm, right? Nichols is Dave at Nats news, right?

I don’t think they should have traded Dunn before the season, though. At that time, people would not have believed he could play 1B and his value would have been lower.

by plebescite on Jul 19, 2010 10:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Are you local?

You need to go down to Potomac and give Holder the love during his starts. Personally, I’m down on Holder because I don’t think his stuff will play in the bigs. He doesn’t walk people, but he gets hit around in high A as a 23 year old. JD is always going to have to fight for his spot because his lack of stuff scares people. Lannan, Holder, Martin, Chico, and all of these guys seem like quality people to me that I’d like to root for but I can’t give them but so much because they just don’t have swing and miss stuff and that lowers the innings they can pitch and increases the pressure on the flawed defense behind them. Part of the reason we have so many errors is that we have more chances with fewer lazy putouts and fewer strikeouts than other teams.

Morse is actually two years older than Maxwell...AG had a chance to win a spot last year and did nothing...

And he’s not yet proven to be a consistent contributor.

And I’ve yet to read one scout/beat writer who says Marrero is ready for the majors…

I’m not supporting Maxwell, trust me, he’s a huge disappointment…but they gave Bernadina time to developed and he’s turned out better than he’d shown he can be…

I was going to say "What'd I miss" but...

then I realized that saying that I “missed” watching the Nats lose is only true if it’s in the sense of not seeing it.

"Inconceivable!"

Jump him to the bigs!

Give Guz and AK their walking papers and promote the kids! Hey, the Marlins skip AAA with their prospects all the time, and they won a world series…
