I'm gonna have a beer to celebrate the Nats beating the BrewCrew.
Or, if necessary, to console myself over a Nats’ loss to the BrewCrew. I win either way!

Clearly, that’s why we have to trade Adam Dunn. If trade Adam Dunn, we can play Morse every day.

Hard to say that with Nyjer actually playing a little better after his 3 steal game.

That ain't gonna happen.
Hudson is definitely off the table now that he’s in the ChiSox rotation. They probably don’t want to give up Viciedo as well. You’re going to have to settle for not the top prospects of a thin minor league system.

And that contract is widely panned and part of the reason the market has corrected since then. Right now it’s a game of chicken between Dunn’s agent and Rizzo to see who can do a better job of predicting the free agent market.

…I know it’s frustrating right now because we gave up a big lead after your boy Morse did all of the heavy lifting. But it’s also about process. You want to stick it out and see if guys like Desmond can have a crucial at bat as part of a game winning rally. It’s frustrating to watch this team losing in this fashion, but they don’t call us The Faithful if we don’t believe we’re scoring against the Brewers “closer”. Let us chop down The Axman!

For me the whole thing is coherent progress towards 2012.
That is all I ask. I understand there isn’t but so much win juice to be squeezed out of the orange this year. But let us figure out what we are for next year and give young players opportunities to show what we can do. If Morse is hot, he should be playing in the platoon role and being the key pinch hitter off the bench. Bernadina’s been better than Morgan and he deserves the opportunity to show if he can hit lefties well enough to play CF.
On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park.
by souldrummer on Jul 23, 2010 11:31 PM EDT up reply actions
Absolutely agreed
Progressing as we move towards 2012 is more important than winning ballgames this season, but keeping guys like Harris in the lineup (or on the roster…. again, I said earlier, if he’s good enough on the roster, he’s good enough to play. That’s the theory you have to use) is detrimental to getting the reps for the guys who might contribute in 2012.
by bluelineswinger on Jul 23, 2010 11:34 PM EDT up reply actions
The best move with Harris...
…is spelling Willingham occasionally against righties if you’re concerned about too many ABs with his back and occasionally spelling Morgan against righties. But I have to remind myself that stressing about the 24th and 25th man on this team is not that critical. Stressing myself about the managing is not that critical. Not giving room for Morse and Bernadina to grow is more troubling, though. Bernie hit a HR against a lefty in his last game. Morgan had his 3 steal comeback game, so I knew he was going to start tonight. But I wish that they’d give Bernie more of an opportunity to play CF some.

Ditto.
He’s a transitional manager who can stay positive and stress fundmentals and details. But if he was given finished pieces on a veteran team his poor tactics would be exposed in bigger games. I get frustrated, though, when people just bash him without ceasing. He is a decent human being and part of the reason that he doesn’t always make the decisions we want him to is his desire to be decent to veterans and absorb criticism of his players can prevent him from putting the best players in the best situations. I’d really like to know how much of the overplaying of Nyjer is him and how much of it is Rizzo.
On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park.
by souldrummer on Jul 23, 2010 11:20 PM EDT up reply actions
And the Willie thing
Honestly, there’s a point to be made here. Rizzo apparently feels that Willie is good enough to be on the 25-man roster (which, I’m sure, has something to do with the lack of better options left by the previous regime). If he’s good enough to be on the 25-man, he should be good enough to play
by bluelineswinger on Jul 23, 2010 11:24 PM EDT up reply actions
Believe so.
Again, he’s not the biggest problem. The roster is the problem. The starting pitching is the problem. If you’re team give you a 5-1 lead, the starter needs to go at least 6. Detwiler, Zimmermann, Maya and friends need to send Stammen to his proper home in Syracuse. We’ve known for awhile that Stammen’s not an answer. Our rotation improves when he’s gone.
On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park.
by souldrummer on Jul 23, 2010 11:18 PM EDT up reply actions
No.... he's certainly not the biggest problem
The SP needs to work deeper. The bullpen needs to settle things down, rather than make them worse. The Brewers got back into the game with ANOTHER hit by a pitcher to extend the inning in the fifth (an RBI single by Narveson). With two outs, no less. If Stammen can retire Narveson there, the rest of the game is played in a completely different context. He let them off the mat.

Nyjer contributed nothing tonight. 4R given up by the bullpen. It’s like the Nationals and Brewers switched pitching staffs.
On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park.
Really disappointing
We can blame the bullpen, and they certainly were horrible. But to go almost five innings without a baserunner against a pretty poor pitching staff, the offense certainly played their part. Get that 5-1 lead and you’ve got their starter on the ropes, you have to put your foot on his throat.

This is kind of where you start getting at Riggleman a bit, though.
He’s double switching out Morse, who appears to be his best offensive player tonight. He’s starting Morgan, who was an out machine tonight. He’s batting Guzman 2nd and we’ve discussed endlessly how he’s not getting on base enough for the guys after him. There are lineups he’s closed his mind to and a more aggressive offensive philosophy that avoids some of the double switches and focuses on score, score, score when you’re playing a good hitting team and your bullpen has shown signs of being less than lights out.

The decision to double switch out Morse was pretty much inexcusable
2 HR night in a game that’s far from decided. No… he doesn’t hit righties as well, and Narveson was out of the game, but still.

The blind adherence to platoon splits is troubling.
If you’re so into platoons, then why do you let Morgan have all of these horrible at bats against lefties. If you can trust Bernie to play CF late in a game in key situations, why don’t you trust him to start games in CF? Morse is our best bat off the bench period, and he needs to be given every opportunity to get more at bats platoon splits be damned.

Living in St. Louis
I get tiresome of the Larussa platoon split insanity. I really just think it’s so overdone by a lot of managers, but Larussa tends to be the worst with this. Even he has adjusted to start letting a guy like Colby Rasmus hit more against lefties.
With Morse (as with Rasmus, who is clearly a guy the Cardinals should be playing everyday), you’re never really going to figure out if he can learn to hit right-handers at a consistent clip if you don’t give him the occasional chance.

I would gladly trade this loss for 5IP of badass Detwiler on Sunday against this lineup with 2Ks against Fielder on nasty hooks. There are some major holes on this team, though. CF, C with cold Pudge, 2B with OBP killer Guzman and the back half of the rotation are all areas of concern. Filling those holes is the most important thing and you hope they make the right call with Dunn on addressing those holes.

I still say I hope it's just taking a hardline
To “settle” for a package he could really be after like Hudson and Viciedo or something. I’m obviously locking in on the White Sox, though other teams have been mentioned. They’ve been the most frequent team mentioned in rumors, though.
Beckham > Hudson and Viciedo, but I honestly wouldn’t trade Beckham straight up for a guy in Dunn’s situation.

I remain convinced that trading him is in the best interest of the team
Obviously, extending him wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world, but a fourth year would trouble me (and that’s what he wants) and if they can’t guarantee they can sign him before the deadline, the draft pick route is just a bad way to go.

Heading out of the thread...
Feel free to post at the Fangraph if you want to keep it up. But I’m pretty much agreed. Hudson’t got to be off the table now. His value has increased to them since Peavy’s down, Hudson’s up, and Hudson’s shown he can get some major leaguers out. I’m not in love with Viciedo either. Spent a bunch of time on a White Sox board today and they couldn’t really come up with anything that would work. Their system is trash. If we can’t get it done, you’ve still got to consider it, but it’s going to be hard to find a deal we’ll like given recent developments.
