SB Nation DC Editor's Pick
Are The Nats Loved In DC?
I have read article after article, and blog after blog, complaining about the players, whining about the park, accusing the owners of being cheap, and nearly everything else imaginable. I hate whining, but I will do a little myself; I’ll whine a little bit about the lack of support given the franchise by the DC Region. Support has slowly gotten better, but there is still a long way to go before the Nationals get the support that they should have, considering this city begged for baseball for 30 years.
First, it would be nice to see more sports bar/restaurant locations actually showing the Nationals games on their sets, and not ESPN Poker, etc. EVERYTIME we go out to eat during a road game, we have to ask that the set be tuned to the Nationals game. The manager usually then comes to the table and asks, "what channel" or "are they even on TV today?" I am waiting for the day that we are asked, "who are the Nats?" We have this happen EVERYWHERE we go, and have even had it happen within a long walking distance from Nationals Park. Very Sad.
Second, it would be nice to hear the Nationals games on a better radio station. The major sports radio station, WTEM, broadcasts the Orioles games instead of the hometown Nationals. I am sure that has more to do with contracts, etc, but still embarrassing to have your hometown radio stations broadcasting the games of another city. No FM station at all. Very Sad.
Third, it would be nice to walk into a sports store and see more Nats gear than other MLB teams. This is getting better, but we are not there yet. At least those same stores are loaded with Caps gear.
Fourth, it would be really nice to see more season ticket holders….even partial game plans. Seeing only 11K at some games is embarrassing, even though we eventually bring our average to the mid 20’s. Being outnumbered by opposing team fans is REALLY embarrassing!
Finally, I will say that it has gotten much better seeing fans around DC wearing Curly W gear (mainly hats). For a while, NO ONE wore Nationals hats, shirts, etc. I have to close on a positive note, so I will say that DC Area residents have gotten much better in this area, and it is very nice to ride the train, walk the streets, and see the occasional Nats hat or Zimmy shirt….I truly see more of these now, than those of other MLB teams.
I’m sure we will not see DC transform into a Baseball Town until we make the playoffs….but it would be nice to see better overall support. Ok....I am finished with my whining now.

Certainly a lot of truth in this post.
Lack of bar options is a real issue. I’d like to watch Sunday’s game at a bar rather than be cramped by some family stuff going on at the house. I have absolutely where I can go that will not burn a hole in my wallet, show the game, and have intelligent fans worth sharing a brew with.
Radio situation is fine for me. I don’t need FM to listen to baseball. They just need more and more affiliates outside of the immediate DC area. Prince Frederick is as far as they get toward the Eastern Shore. Don’t know if that reaches Ocean City. Frederick’s ok. They need more stuff in southern Virginia, especially the Richmone situation. WTEM’s locked into the Orioles and I imagine that their ratings stink because of it. They never talk Orioles on their shows but their still bound to broadcast them contractually. I’m not crying any tears for Snyder’s network on that one.
Lack of season ticket holders is the double edged storm of the economy and the losing. At least people love Strasburg now, and it’s too bad that they are not winning more when he’s not on the mound due to the starting pitching coming back to where it was expected to be elsewhere in the rotation.

What part of southern Maryland are you in?
You don’t get the Prince Frederick affiliate?

St. Marys County. I didnt even know there was a Prince Frederick affiliate, I cant seem to find the info on the Nats website what is that on the dial?
Aaaagh. I may have screwed up. I may be getting Prince Frederick and Frederick confused during the intro on the game broadcasts.
Wonder if Angelos is blocking southern Maryland due to his beloved Delmarva Shorebirds and his desire to make all of Maryland O’s territory if possible. Don’t know what demand is there, either.

Yup, none reachable down here.
souldrummer, the closest team here is Bowie (if you dont count the Blue Crabs), and it wouldnt surprise me if Angelos is up to it.
Heck, when I leave the beltway, wimpy 1500 WFED starts weakening.
107.7 wasn’t much stronger a couple years ago.
I was actually getting 1500 south of Richmond on 64
It came in and out but if I’d pulled over I could have listened to the game on the way back from the beach.
Why not pick a bar?
Where do people generally live from this group? No reason we can’t pick a bar and work out a deal with them to always show the game. If there is enough interest, we could even get an event going on. The UNC alums have worked out several deals with Crystal City Sports Pub, including them shipping up Blue Cups (don’t ask) from He’s Not for Dook games.
I obviously would like something in NOVA, but would be open to something downtown too since that is where I work. If people are interested, then we can get a poll going for locations and try and organize a few watching parties for FB folks.

i get charlie and dave loud and clear in richmond, 950 AM
wasnt always the case since in past years they preferred to play college games but now its consistently every game and i credit charlie and daves quality for that
I was pleasantly surprised last night.
Went out to dinner here on the Hill. Place was packed, but we found a seat at the bar… and the Nats game was already on one of the TVs over the bar (Os and the Women’s Softball World Cup on the other two). One of the bartenders was half-watching as he made his rounds, and he later asked us if we minded if he switched it to the HD feed (which got us to stay for an extra inning). We heard some murmurs in the crowd behind us when Morse went yard, a couple asked us when Stras was pitching next, and a couple of guys stood next to us and watched for a couple of innings while they waited for a table. Last season, places would be showing the Yankees. It’s coming around slowly. I wouldn’t say the Nats are “loved” yet (outside of fanatics like us, heh) but I think that interest is coming back. People are taking another look.

I’m still looking for some kind of bar where I can buy like three quality beers and watch Sunday’s game with fellow fans.

I have a question
I’m a proud UVA student left bitter from my hometown blog Gaslamp Ball. Since I seemingly watch more MASN anyway (and have someone grown to like the Nationals), am I welcome here? And I have some rooting interest anyway, since I just acquired Adam Dunn in my fantasy league.

All are welcome who do not troll.
We realize that there are many shared allegiances for our fledgling enterprise. What’s wrong with Gaslamp? Been nice to see more people coming through here this year with the small steps of improvement plus more lurkers and people checking us out due to the Strasburg hype.

Essentially what happened was that there’s this smartass poster on GLB (who happens to be one of the most respected posters, and I know that and I respect him for his intellect— apparently that wasn’t reciprocated) and we’ve quarreled in the past. I was a new member on GLB, and we’ve gotten into arguments of the traditional paradigm vs. sabermetrics. I’m of the former, even though I’m learning stats and somewhat know what i’m talking on that side.
Essentially last night Kelly Johnson was brought up (since we all like him as a Padres target) and that guy brought up some defensive stats. I supplemented his post by giving a traditional player comparison of his defense to Mark DeRosa— because that’s what a scout I know told me once time when I asked about that (doing fantasy prep during UVA’s baseball season). I figured that comparison wouldn’t draw controversy since we’ve seen plenty of DeRosa in the NL West and because both players have moved around the diamond in their careers, and he just played with it in a smartass way and bashed my credibility and self-righteousness knowing scouts (because I wasn’t willing to namedrop the Braves scout I talked to). And then he bashes the credibility of scouts over statistics and I try to fight back.
And it gets nasty, and it cools down and we make amends and play around with it (since a lot of people were watching this random thread), and then I found something he tweeted during that argument mocking me, and I got really angry and called that classless, especially since all of the established members of GLB tweeted around that behind my back (since I don’t follow any of them).
So now I’m here, I’ll try and not cause any problems, and I hope I’m welcome.

There are going to be stat guys everywhere that you look on the internet.
I’ve had some pretty vigorous “debates” with folks on this site. As long as people realize that we’re all just passionate and we can be stubborn because we care I think things are good. My two things are when people start banging the drum to endlessly bash a player or manager. Nyjer Morgan can be a flash point around here. The trade Dunn stuff got to be a bit of a flash point around here. Riggleman and Morse can be flash points around here some, especially after last night’s game. There’s at least one former Padres fan here. Don’t really have too many dogs in the NL West fight because I haven’t seen the teams enough. I do know it’s anyone but the Phillies for me in the NL East and I’m pro-Reds in the central, especially after getting to know a few of their DC fans after crashing their Strasburg meetup earlier this week.
I think we’ve had maybe one debate this week that got a little bit too personal, and as long as you take feedback when other members give it, things are cool. Not going to label other members yet as being statheads or traditional or beating drums beyond my drum set, but you’ll pick that up pretty quick. Hope you dig UVA as well. Two cousins who graduated there and are doing well.

And that’s one more thing I’m known for back at that other blog— my consistent and persistent fandom, defense, and mentions of my UVA love affair. And it’s worthwhile, because that’s how I’ve built my modest network of baseball friends and people— by not being afraid to ask questions and meeting scouts and writers, as a semi-professional writer myself

Last week the Harris Teeter in Reston set up a display stand of Nats t-shirts and hats right as you walk in.
I went Saturday for my weekly shopping and noticed it. I went back the next day because I had forgotten something and all of the hats had sold out.
I take that as a somewhat reassuring sign.

As to Nats on the TV's at bars
Maybe I’m just fortunate, but there are four bars here in Shirlington that would generally show sporty things like the Nats, and all of them actually DO show the Nats, without any prompting whatsoever. And this is especially relevant because the neighborhood does not carry Comcast, and hence these bars/restaurants have to pay (a substantial amount) extra for the ability to pick up MASN.
Rob

Shirlington's not Metro accessible, right?
Arlington’s certainly a candidate. Other thing is to me a Nats bar is one where you can consistently expect Nats fans to intentionally congregate to watch many games, especially road Strasburg starts.

Second floor of the Clarendon Hard Times
Is basically a sports bar, is next to a metro, and they show most Nats games.
Aim for the head baby Jesus
I would hope Hard Times does.....
especially since Hard Times is my favorite place to eat inside the stadium….they have, IMO, the best deals in the stadium with the Nachos and the Chili Mac…..both are hefty servings for a reasonable price.
AGREE.
And at their restaurant in Clarendon, they have great wings and it is literally 15 yards from a metro entrance and close to other good stuff.
Also, Bailey’s sports bar at Ballston Mall must show the Nats.
Baileys shows everything
but the food and service leave something to be desired.
Aim for the head baby Jesus
And free parking in the evenings weekends
in the HHS building down the street
Aim for the head baby Jesus
What About Pentagon Row......
LIke I mentioned above, CHAMPS at Pentagon Row is a great location…..it is very, very close to the Pentagon City Metro Station and the Pentagon City Mall, and they have a nice bar area, and several TV’s (and at least one large “four screen” tv). Champs is a place that my wife and I like a lot, and a place that we have harrassed in the past to turn at least one of their sets to the Nats game. They have Nats signs up, but don’t usually show the games unless prompted. We can change that! :-)
No, it's not Metro friendly
I wasn’t really trying to nominate the area for a Nats bar, just sharing my experience. The horror stories of having to watch the Yankees while the Nationals are playing are just too hard — too painful — to believe. The Humanity!
Rob
"No matter what I talk about, I always get back to baseball."

I'm realizing that the bars probably had Yankees and BoSox...
…before the Nats came to town and those teams can represent 162 dates a year while the Nats are representing closer to 81 with season ticket holders heading to the park for home games. Certainly, this is part of the reason why the area around Nats park needs it’s own bar scene closer to Waterfront with better parking in that area.

I don’t think that this team can truly be loved and embraced by this region until they start consistently winning. The Redskins (as much as we all hate to admit it) are the only team (besides DC United) to win a Championship recently in the current generation and are the stronghold of most of the DMV area. I do see some tides turning with the rise of the Caps, but the Redskins are the only team that for some reason are unconditionally loved by this area. The Caps are catching on, but as a Caps fan since 1992, I have to reserve judgment for a downturn to happen. The Nationals will not be universally embraced until they’re consistently making a push for the playoffs. Really though, I think this town wants a reason to love them, and whenever they come close to playing respectable (hovering around .500) ball, excitement goes on an uptick, but then they come down to earth and things go back to the way they were, noone caring.
Easy on the 'Skins there, partner
I’m a season ticket holder, and therefore I’ve suffered enough!
I've been a few times...
…my brother is commuting from NYC to sit in the club sections until his contract runs out. If they don’t win next year, I’m sure that he too will be jaded. It is extremely frustrating as a fan of the ‘Skins to see them repeatedly make them mistakes over and over again. After Archuleta and all of the other free agent saviors, you’d think they’d have enough sense not to jump into the Haynesworth pool. They still undervalue draft picks too much for my tastes. I’d rather a committed rebuild and youth movement, but I hope I’m wrong and they wreak havoc in the division and Philly in particular. Would certainly help shut up Philly fans when they come to Nats park.

71 Reponses? I am Impressed!
I thought for sure I would be flamed completely off the board! I know how DC fans hate being challenged, even though they literally define “bandwagon” as a whole. Of course, this opinion comes from someone originally from Alabama, and an Alabama football fan. You gotta remember, Alabama had over 92 thousand fans (sell-out) come out to see a SPRING PRACTICE GAME a couple years ago, BEFORE they were good enough to even compete! They were, what, 6-6 that season? I love the Nationals SO much, that I just want to see DC give them a little more support, defend our turf (Nats Park), and NEVER let another team take over our yard! Win or lose, the Nats must be supported! ESPECIALLY after the suffering that this city has been through in its’ baseball history.
I think most of us realize that the Nats are second class citizens at times in the DC marketplace.
Personally, I feel that in DC you have to pay your dues and earn your fans becasue there are so many options for the entertainment dollar. I was completmenting a Brewers fan on their fan support during the three game sweep given that they aren’t really a contending team either. But you have to remember that there isn’t as much to do in Milwaukee either (at least according to that fan). But we are fans who can help pay some of those dues. Baseball takes time and investment to understand the subtleties of the game and having a more organized fan base that will share the storylines and the nuances of the game will help fans of other DC teams embrace the Nats. Certainly, that was my experience with the Caps. The core Caps fans who’ve been following them from the losing expansion days and playoff frustration helped lead the way for those who got on board during the playoffs and Ovechkin hype.

Right under the text of the post, there’s the email/print/action buttons. Click on action and you’ll get the choice to rec or flag. Most people who just wander in here don’t realize about reccing actual fanposts. I always advocate for doing that because it’s a good way to keep positive threads surfaced. Number of posts doesn’t really have that much to do with it. I think this one has been labeled an editor’s pick to keep it surfaced. That’s the overlords at SBNation advising something to stay surfaced independent of rec’s. Minor League Ball does a good job of reccing the Minor League gamethreads (which post stats of key minor league performances during the day) so that they stay surfaced if people start putting up a lot of fanposts.

Does This Make 100 Response?
Can’t believe this one reached the tripled digits. BTW…another reason that Virginia is Braves country, is most likely due to the former Richmond Braves. Did anyone else ever move into that stadium? Not Exactly.....
But much closer than the Wegmans. The center portion of the W leans to the left on the Nats version, and to the right on the Walgreens. Also, if you look at how the curly W begins on the left side, it is different with each one. Just got a thought….how does Walgreens Field at Nationals Park sound for naming rights? NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Speaking of which…wonder if they will ever sell the naming rights? Does Capital One have a stadium yet? Since they are now the owners of Chevy Chase……..well, just a thought.
If They Do...........
Hopefully, they will keep “Nationals Park” IN the name. I hate the Redskins, always have, but I always thought that dropping Jack Kent Cooke from the name of the stadium was a low blow to the man who built the stadium, and who refused to move to another city, even when no one wanted his new house in their neighborhood. Maybe FedEx Field at JKC Stadium could have worked?
DC is a terrible sports town in general.

The Redskins have a reputation as being an event because there is only 8 dates and those dates are always high intensity and the Redskins have a (distant) tradition of winning. Caps are building core fans. I’ve probably got to put in a few more years before I go from an intense Caps fan to a core Cap fan that fully understands the history of the Caps and their role in the league.

My seven year old son loves the Nationals
And that’s as it should be. It’s his team. The Nationals will be the team he will grow up with and live and die with and make idols of as they win and lose. The oldsters like us either accepted the change from Montreal and decided to keep the faith or, if you were a DC area resident, accepted the Nationals as the best option available. (I for one could never accept a team that can’t sing the Star Spangled Banner properly.) If we had a winning team, we’d have a lot more people jumping on the band wagon but, as anyone can tell when going to a game at Nationals Park, it too often seems like many of the people at the stadium want to see “their” team play. It’s going to take a generation to make the Nationals “our” team. But when it’s game day, I guarantee you will see my son ready to go with Zimmerman shirt on, red curly W on top and baseball glove in hand running out the door to catch the train.
I couldn't agree more !
As a 26 year old who grew up in the tidewater and raised to love the O’s and Redskins I have been abe to in m,y last 3 years in DC really fall in love with the Nationals. Part geography ( live two blocks from the stadium) part personal attraction ( underdog, rebuild, 2nd chances stuff) this team has over taken my generational inclination to root for the O’s. I still like them for American League stuff but overall the Nats have a great oppurtunity to capture a market unlike anything the birds ever had. Winning obviously helps but kids are the future. When you sons generation takes hold of the city is when we will see ticket sells go up, season ticket hoders increase win or lose.

Gym Gear
From the various gyms I have gone to I can say with confidents that the Nationals lead all local teams in shirts used as gym gear by people I have seen in gyms.
Another Sign of Disrespect.....
Booing when your star pitcher’s photo is displayed on the big board, simply because he was scratched from the game due to a likely injury.
Yeah, that was bad
But I bet it was mostly Braves fans that did that.
Rob
"Ninety feet between home plate and first base may be the closest man has ever come to perfection." -- Red Smith
Probably the neutrals and bandwagoner than the Braves fans...
They wanted to see Strasburg face Heyward and Strasburg face the Braves and fall short. They also might have been slightly fearful of a streaking Strasburg in the win column, and also wanted a game in the standings and probably felt glad about the increased chances for a Braves sweep, especially if Strasburg is used the rest to mow down the Phillies on Sunday. I think the booers were mostly the bandwagon nonbaseball fans who don’t understand the game, drank too much, and felt gipped because they didn’t understand that it’s completely understandable for a pitcher to get scratched the day of his start, especially one of Strasburg’s quality. Certainly, that was more the profile of the louder pretty harmless drunks behind me in the grandstand than the as usual tame and somewhat entitled Braves fans.
On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park.
There was a simple fix for this issue
All the Nats staff had to do was make an announcement prior to Batista taking the field. They didn’t until, what was it, the fourth inning? I’m pretty sure that everyone at the park was disappointed not to see Strasburg pitch. Some contained themselves better than others but all you have to do is visit some of the other SBNation baseball blogs – Met’s Amazin Avenue comes to mind – to see knowledgeable baseball fans acting like a bunch of obnoxious idiots.
Yep, would have been good to announce that at least he had been scratched for some kind of issue before Batista took the mound.
But they were caught extremely wrongfooted and confused. I heard someone was in a PR suite and they didn’t even know what was going on as it happened. In other words, I suspect this happened so late that the videoboard guy who makes these kind of things look pretty on their bells and whistles scoreboard and the folks who have to approve those kind of things may not have had the power to approve it in the limited window of time between Strasburg’s issue and the beginning of the game.
