Lineup is just a bit strange today...
Any reason why Dunnkey is getting the day off???

What the beat writers were saying is that it's just a regular scheduled day off...
With Zim due to get a day off tomorrow, but everyone’s reaction is to think some deal went down first…

Yeah....my heart literally stopped for a second or two there!
I thought he may have been traded. I am definitely in the “keep Dunn” camp.
Nope, merely Fearless Riggler feeling his new-found vote of confidence and going quite insane with the lineups....

I like Bernie in the two-spot.
Although I wouldn’t mind seeing Desi there and Bernie 6th. Bernie gots a little more pop, and I feel like Ian might improve his OBP at the top of the order—does anyone else think he presses to much at the bottom? He has been taking more pitches lately.

I would much rather see Morse at 1B….not Gonzo. Let Gonzo give Zimmy and Dez their days off, and let Morse and Kennedy spell Dunn his days.

I don't think Rizzo will do it.
But I’ve been surprised before. Rizzo’s trades and moves seemed to be designed to remove Bowden detritus. Now I think he has immense faith in his ability to draft.
On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park.
Then again, from my perspective I see a guy in waiting in Storen
And seeing how the Padres can seemingly just churn bullpen arms, I’d dangle Capps if a good piece can come back in return.
jtb yl1
by Allen J. Kha on Jul 24, 2010 7:31 PM EDT up reply actions
He's under team control next year.
I don’t think Capps can sustain the save percentage so I wouldn’t mind if we move him. But it’s not like George Sherrill was worth a king’s ransom for the O’s. Bullpen competence is a radical concept around here so there’s a lot to be said for consolidating the bullpen. Plus Clippard’s struggles make it possible that too much would be put on Storen too soon, much like Hanrahan was overly relied upon last year before the trade.
On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park.
That makes a lot of sense
And yes after watching too much Nats Xtra, I’ve figured out that the incompetence exists. Beats the Orioles incompetence though, by a lot

That was a bit more contact than I care for.
This is kind of the JD Martin MO. No walks, dingers, no Ks. Watch him get pinpricked to pieces. Not a part of our future and hopefully not a part of next year’s rotation. Kind of a heroic effort him to get to the bigs and make around replacement level contributions each of the last two years.

Depends on what the Rays do at the deadline.
Seems to me that they may move one of the starters for more offense and bring up Hellickson as a fifth starter the rest of the way. They’re not going bullpen yet with him like the Reds did with Chapman.
On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park.
They aren't moving Davis. My best bet would be Garza being the one if they move for something
The smart thing would be for them to just get Luke Scott, although they are all clamoring for Werth-less or Hammer.

I really, really don't think they'll get Hammer.
People have speculated that Dunn would be a fit. This is the one time of year when everyone likes Luke Scott.
On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park.
Unless Dunn DHs. Because they/we don't want/need him at 1B or RF.
Pena, despite his struggles, is still a stellar 1B and Zobrist’s flexibility makes Dunn’s defense a turnoff, despite the need for an upgrade. Only if Huff is willing to DH, but is he?

If he would like to get paid on his next contract he is.
Because if he tanks it down the stretch in a hitting only role he would not be a happy camper. But if an AL team goes after him and asks him to DH while switching leagues, buyer beware.
On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park.
So essentially, he's pulled a (more-expensive) Aubrey Huff
The sunshine will come to Nats Park. I promise.
by Allen J. Kha on Jul 24, 2010 8:07 PM EDT up reply actions
Aubrey Huff should be a DH?
Haven’t seen enough of him in the field. Dunn’s acceptable at 1B, but he should be open to DHing if he’ll get better offers in the AL.
On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park.
Huff screams mediocre (although he's been solid this season)
I personally like to consider Huff Dunn-light (and I have both on my main fantasy team, so it’s awesome), but that’s just me…
And the big similarity was both signing low-risk, small money deals and they’ll reap the benefits next season

Walkoff for the Brewers...
…the growing pains of youth for Storen. Command just isn’t there all the time yet. But these last two nights kind of show you why they aren’t gonna move Capps. You’ve got to have at least two reliable relievers. Heartbreaking loss. We will be a much better team when we do not have to rely on Wil Nieves for key situations. Catcher’s a real weakness on this team.

Storen's got some command issues.
It would be nice if he could be the 3rd or 4th guy out of the pen this year as a rookie, but they are letting him learn in high leverage situations. But it’s tough for Riggleman. Yesterday he uses Peaches in the high leverage situation. Peaches let’s him down. Today he uses Storen in the high leverage situation and Storen lets him down. Having a competent bullpen makes a manager look much better.
On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park.
by souldrummer on Jul 24, 2010 10:45 PM EDT up reply actions
Being exposed to the Padres, I'm never really carried the philosophy of leverage situations
Rather, you fill your bullpen with five to six quality guys who can get the job done, and the high-leverage performers will rise up to the occasion. That’s what carried the 2008 Rays bullpen to success (well and Price too)
The sunshine will come to Nats Park. I promise.
by Allen J. Kha on Jul 24, 2010 10:47 PM EDT up reply actions
I mean sure, that's nice.
But we’ve got multiple guys who are rejects from other organizations manning the back end of our bullpen. Peralta, Royals reject. Slaten, Diamondbacks reject. Batista, rejected by millions. Burnett’s okay but he’s not a light’s out LOOGY. Capps is a passable closer. Clippard and Storen are works in progress.

by Allen J. Kha on Jul 24, 2010 10:54 PM EDT up reply actions
Somebody foolin' with me?
Redundancy to me is just making sure you’ve got enough options in AAA if they guys you count on fail or get injured. We certainly did not have very much of that last year except wild man Mac the 9th. And not having that redundancy meant that we had to trade Hanrahan when he started to implode instead of merely giving him some time in Syracuse to cool out.

Just ask. We can save you the time.
Brian Bruney was wild in the Yankees organization but Rizzo traded our Rule 5 pick to the Yankees for him thinking that his stuff could be good enough to balance out his wildness. He was just wild here, and he might have had a bad attitude to boot. We cut him, and he hasn’t been able to stick in the majors this year.
Bergmann’s been around forever. He was an Expos draft pick. At one point in time, his stuff was considered rotation worthy with such former early Nats hopes as John Patterson (who was money in 2005) and Sean Hill (who perpetually teased us with alternating almost dominance and injuries). Bergmann’s a big fly ball guy who looked he was putting it together as a big league roster worthy reliever. He had a few appearances this year and didn’t get it done so he was DFAed and surprisingly accepted the demotion to Syracuse.
Tyler Walker, aka “The Man of Sweat”, has been through a couple of organizations, certainly the Giants and maybe the Phillies? He was thought of as a decent guy to have at the backend of the bullpen. He got unlucky and then he got hurt and now he’s trying to rehab his way back. It will be interesting to see who gets sent back down if he’s healthy because I don’t know if he has options and Batista’s performance is getting worse despite his rubber armed abilities. Peralta’s success in showing he’s more than just the fringy ROOGY he’d been before this year makes some of these decisions tougher.
In general, worrying about the back end of the bullpen for a team on the fast track to 90 losses is not the best use of one’s time.
On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park.

I remember Bruney with the Yanks and before that the DBags (I think)
But that’s neither here nor there. I want to study the organization anyway so I can learn about the prospects.
And just a random thought I had. Do you know if the Angels are interested in Dunn? And if so, do you think they’d part with Trout in a package? Just curious, not trying to flame or anything.
The sunshine will come to Nats Park. I promise.
by Allen J. Kha on Jul 24, 2010 11:11 PM EDT up reply actions
From what I've heard...
…the Angels are still trying to decide whether they can contend or not and a lot of that depends on how they do in the next 7 days. Certainly they have some needs and some assets. No way they’ll part with Trout for a rental from what I’ve heard.
The best place to study the organization is the Big Board and The Draft Track on Natsfarm.com FWIW.

The Angels seem like some shrewd folks.
I don’t think Trout is on the table, and I haven’t heard much about them as a rumored fit for Dunn lately no matter how much it might make sense. Looks like ChiSox reduced offer or bust, but I hope I’m wrong and someone else is wisely not making offers through the media and will get into the sweepstakes closer to the deadline. I’d imagine there are some GM’s who would like nothing more than to see the Nats not make any progress towards resigning Dunn and watch Rizzo come to them with his tail between his legs after all of his “painful” rhetoric.
On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park.
by souldrummer on Jul 24, 2010 11:27 PM EDT up reply actions
Oh definitely the Angels are a solid organization
Far too prudent to let go of Trout, but they’ve busted with some of their prospects recently.
As for Dunn, perhaps the Rays might just go after it, but besides that, I don’t see very many fits. I would just hope that a rental would render a resign in the offseason, if you think that that’s worth it.
The sunshine will come to Nats Park. I promise.
by Allen J. Kha on Jul 24, 2010 11:31 PM EDT up reply actions
You want the Rays to get into it...
…but I think they see Boston slipping a bit and feel that they can go to war with who they already have. Would love to see the Rays get into it because they have the depth in their farm system to give up something of valuable and still get something done.

Hey! We can be hopefully optimistic
And I hate to bring the Padres into this again, but they stunk in the first half of last season, then seemingly turned it around. Over the last season’s worth of games, they are in the top 3 or 4 in winning percentage I think.
We can apply the same hope here. Just need a bit of pitching, a bit of defense, and a bit of Dunn and Hammer.

Again, it's about process.
You have to give Riggles some credit. The bunt with Morgan was not what I was expecting, but it was an acceptable play that worked better than I could have hoped. People, it’s about process. Process, it’s about process. There was a lot of good process in this game. I would have been happy, very happy, if they had won, but I’m much happier with how the troops were deployed.
1) We’ve got bad backend starting pitching. Exposed again.
2) Their bullpen beat our bullpen. We allow 3 runs, they allow 1. Give Hoffman and Villanueva credit for catching up large.
3) Brewers played exceptional defense. Edmond’s play was a real difference in the game.
4) Our outmachines were kind of painful. Really, really need some credible offense from the catcher position.
