Washington Nationals Swept Out Of Miller Park, Milwaukee Brewers Win, 8-3.

Today's Top 5:

5. The Hawk: At about the same time the Nats and Brewers were beginning play in Milwaukee, in Cooperstown, NY, the Montreal Expos' Andre Dawson was being inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. The Hawk, who played  11 of his 21 seasons in Montreal, appeared on nine ballots for the Hall before he was elected last winter. The decision to enter into the hallowed halls wearing an Expos cap wasn't his, he'd said in some publications that he would have preferred to have been immortalized as a Cub, but he'll always be an Expo. Congrats, Hawk.

4. 44 Pitch First: The Nationals were originally planning on limiting their '07 1st Round pick, pitcher Ross Detwiler, to around 5.0 innings of work in his 2010 debut after Spring surgery to repair a torn labrum in his hip and 7 minor league rehab starts, but after abusing the bullpen last night, the reports before the game said that he'd have a longer leash. Detwiler uses about half of the pitches he was expected to throw in the first, however, allowing two runs to cross after a one-out error (E: 79: Fielding Error On Willie Harris) and back-to-back two-out walks load the bases and a single and wild pitch make it 2-0 before Joe Inglett leaves the bases loaded when he flies to Nyjer Morgan in center to finally end an extremely long bottom of the first. 2-0 Milwaukee. 8 Batters faced, 44 pitches, 22 strikes. K, E, FO, BB, BB, RBI Single, IBB, WP, FO...

Star-divide

3. 5 R, 0 ER: Ross Detwiler retires the Brewers in order in the second and third, then gives up a leadoff single to Jonathan Lucroy in the fourth, but has two down and gets the groundout to short for the final ou--- Ian Desmond drops a grounder from the opposing pitcher Dave Bush and then rushes a throw that gets by Adam Dunn for Desmond's 23rd error of the year, and the Nats' league-leading 80th error of 2010. Lucroy scores on the error two outs after the leadoff single. 3-0 Milwaukee. Rickie Weeks up next, and two pitches after the error Weeks gets hold of a hanging slider from Detwiler and launches it to left. 5-0 Brewers.

2. McGehee Kills Comeback: The Nats get back-to-back singles to start the sixth by Michael Morse and Nyjer Morgan and a one-out sac fly by Josh Willingham scores Morse from third before Adam Dunn's two-out single drives Morgan in. 5-2 Brewers. Nyjer Morgan singles in Adam Kennedy in the seventh to get the Nats within two at 5-3, but Alcides Escobar triples to start the Milwaukee seventh and after a one-out intentional walk, Joel Peralta gives up a 3-run bomb to Casey McGehee that puts the game out of reach at 8-3 Milwaukee.

1. Nats Swept: For the fifth time this season, the Washington Nationals are swept. Milwaukee wins all three in Miller Park after having dropped two of the three games the two teams played in Nationals Park back in mid-April. The Nats are now 17-36 on the road in 2010. They have a league-leading 80 errors, having reclaimed the no.1 overall spot after the Marlins had momentarily tied them in defensive ineptitude. The Nats are now 16-31 after ending may 26-26.

Trading Dunn

With the recent injury to Magglio Ordonez MLBTR is reporting the Tigers might have interest in Dunn. Andy Oliver’s name gets tossed around, and if the Nats land him in a package I think I’d be ok with the deal. Oliver is a left-handed power pitcher, and would go great sandwiched between Straburg and Zimmermann one day in the rotation.

I will gladly eat crow if Brandon Jones does well for the 49ers in 2010.

The bigger thing about this is that you've got another team in the sweepstakes...

…it strengthens Rizzo’s leverage position with the Dunn camp, potentially gets Kenny Williams to get itchy enough to move Hudson, and makes it possible to get stuff from a stronger Detroit farm system (I think).

I'd much rather see him go to Detroit

because I don’t want the Nats acquiring Gordon Beckham (I’m not sold on this guy, even though I’m no scout). The Tigers do have some nice pieces in the minors, and I wouldn’t hate seeing Dunn in a Tigers uni.

I don't think that it would be Beckham.

Beckham’s hitting better as of late, though, and he would fill a real need as a 2B not named Guzman or Kennedy. WAR and salary at 2B saved and subtract Dunn’s salary and that gives you some dollars to fill other needs. Doubt Chicago would trade him, though. It’s Hudson at best or Viciedo plus other stuff or take your fill of some of the other things in the ChiSox system. Here’s a link to a Fanpost at Sickels with some of the names in their Top 25 according to a poster over there.

Are you sold on him enough that he'll be an above-average 2B and a permanent fixture on this team?

Because I am, and he’s played much better this season since he has seemingly resolved the mechanical problems in his swing. At some point, I think it’s just as much about value and need as it is about getting as much as we can.

If Beckham can be a valuable piece and part of the Nats future, and we can get another piece or two for a good White Sox farm system, then I’m all for it. And showing the bluff on the Tiger’s interest can only help us.

Sunshine will come to Nats Park, I promise.

I don't think they are going to trade Beckham.

He’s been off the table for awhile and that’s part of why they have been talking to the Brewers more. If Beckham was on the table, the deal would probably be done already.

Good point, and I agree with your post above.

I wish we could get Beckham though, I’d do that in a heartbeat.

Tigers' GM say pretty adamantly that everyone's asking for Oliver and Jacob Turner, but:

“I’m not going to give away blue-chip young players for a guy for two months. It just doesn’t make sense…”

Vivian Jaffe: "Have you ever transcended space and time?"
Albert Markovski: "Yes. No. Uh, time, not space... No, I don't know what you're talking about."

by Patrick Reddington on Jul 25, 2010 9:17 PM EDT up reply actions

It's not just a two-month rental...

…it’s a rental plus two picks if you don’t sign him. That may not be “blue-chip,” but it’s not C-prospects, either. I hope all this hullabaloo somehow results in reasonable extension here in DC.

Yep...

…you should get at least a B level prospect given the draft picks that will be involved. For Nick Johnson, the fringy prospect back end of the rotation prayer named Aaron Thompson. For Dunn, you expected someone who can be a key regular by 2012.

Detwiler remains an enigma...

…he looked more like the back end candidate that I remember from Detwiler 1.0 last year than the hot streak from Detwiler 2.0 last year. At first, I was concerned because in the long first inning he couldn’t get the curve ball over and his velocity seemed diminished. They seemed to be able to foul off pitch after pitch after pitch and he didn’t have an out pitch. Once he started throwing the curve ball for strikes, the Brewers started swinging earlier in the count and he looked better.

Same guy, though. The mechanics issues make you worry about repeating his delivery and pounding the strike zone for 7 innings. His fast ball does not seem to be enough of a plus pitch to get swings and misses. That curve ball can be nasty to lefties and when he’s locating it he has better stuff than our current back end options. He looks more like a four; you hope some of that’s due to issues of rest. Maybe after the next start I’ll be more inspired to look at all the fancy PitchF/X bells and whistles that hardier souls like Natstats are friendlier with.

by souldrummer on Jul 25, 2010 9:03 PM EDT reply actions

Certainly agree with this...

…but the deal with Detwiler is when do we go from “Give him time he’ll get well” to “We really need to know what he have so we can do what’s best for our franchise.” I wish he’d been able to get another start or two at Harrisburg and didn’t have to go out on short rest today. All of the bad defense behind him only added insult to injury.

On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park.

by souldrummer on Jul 25, 2010 9:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes he did.

Given the rest, the AA performance, and the defense behind him you can’t get too upset about this start. I’m still trying to dissect his stuff. You forgive him for the command issues in the first that were amplified due to the bad defense. The dingers though are a concern. The lack of swings and misses on fastballs is a concern. They keep selling him as having 3 starter stuff and I haven’t seen that yet. He looks like a major leaguer when he puts it all together, but he’s going to ahve to make a great leap forward for us to be counting on him as a major rotation piece that’s a drastic improvement over guys like a healthy Marquis.

In other news...

…they are sending Jordan Zimmermann to rehab with Hagerstown in the first half of their doubleheader tomorrow. I don’t know what that means in terms of his prospects towards filling Martin’s spot or not. Probably has more to do with wanting to have some of the Nats staff check him out in Hagerstown during the day rather than schlepp out to Wilmington to see the P-Nats on the road at 7:00.

Thought this was interesting, Dunn and Riggleman on the Dunner's visit to Uecker:

Sports Madison.com:

Dunn:

“‘I could care less if I get in trouble for going up and seeing my guy after he had heart surgery,’ Dunn said. ’I’ll pay my fine.’”

Riggleman when told Dunn went to booth during game:

“’I wish you hadn’t told me that,’ he said. ‘I don’t have any comment on that.’

Ruh Roh.

Dunn seems like a genuinely good guy who plays the game because it’s fun for him and is warm with people. I don’t have a problem doing it, but I also don’t have a problem with him getting fined. Sad to see that this had to get out for all parties involved and I hope this doesn’t become some big brouhaha during the off day.

The more I think about it, the more I agree.

At first, it looked pretty innocuous. But you still can’t do that when you have a professional commitment to uphold. It simply doesn’t work that way, as goodish and sincere as it feels.

I personally don’t think the crime deserves a severe penalty, but I hope Riggles figures out a way to reprimand Dunn enough to show the players the severity of such insubordinations, but not come off as too hard or not amicable.

Bad Donkey.

I think this is his childish outburst and his rebellion against authority so he can prepare himself to cut the cord with the Nats if he gets traded. Now he can justify it in his head more easily. They got rid of me because I broke the rules.

I'm not reading that much into it.

Certainly the lack of remorse was troubling. There’s different defintions of “scheduled day off” here I suppose. I look at this whole thing as being more proUecker than anti Nats. He and his agent should still be looking as the Nats as one of the more likely teams to offer him a better deal or at least drive the market up with their clear desire to sign him. Alienating them openly at this stage seems to be the last thing he would want to do.

The first salvo in the Trade Deadline fest...

…Dan Haren has landed with the Angels. Makes sense for the Angels. They get a core rotation piece who will help them try this year and contend once Cliff Lee is on his merry way. Don’t know the prospects well enough to assess the Diamondbacks half of the deal yet. The Minorleague ball thread seems to believe that the Diamondbacks got housed, miss the GM they canned, and better hope that the Player To Be Named Later is someone almost on the level of Mike Trout.

It would kind of be like Manny karma. We train Manny so that the Indians can bat themselves on the back for hiring him for the cheap after he’s learned some lessons. Same plan for Gibson could work out.

Was Just Defending Dez on Another Site......

Did not realize it until I looked it up, but Cal Ripken averaged 25 Errors each of his first three full seasons. Did not realize that. I thought I would look him up, since a couple folks on here mentioned the high number of errors by Jeter and Ramirez during their first year or two.

Helpful...

…Desmond’s kind of a weird prospect because he was overhyped and rushed under the Bowden regime then injuries slowed him down. Last year was kind of a breakout for him and a lot of people were surprised about how well he did in the International League. FWIW, he’s genuinely not as highly regarded elsewhere as he is here. People are not but so optimistic that he’s going to improve his contact that much over where he is now, although they do believe the defense will improve. The Reds guys like Brendanukkah who are local to DC like him a bunch, though.
