Ahh....

It’ll be so nice to get back to the park after a 16-day hiatus. Well, not really that long: I did catch a P-Nats game in the interim, so that helped. But that’s kind of like methadone. I want the good stuff!

Love Willingham...and wish he was ours, but...

there is only one Hammer.

There is only one Hammerin' Hank

I remember watching him hit #715 when i was a kid.

That said – that’s like saying “there’s only one Lefty” (Lefty Grove? Lefty Gomez? You get the idea). So take no offense to The Hammer’s nickname, just marvel at his walkoff magic :-)

Mike Morse

Has 12 hits in his last 24 at bats, is hitting .349 on the year, and hasn’t committed a fielding error since 2005. How about Bernie in center, Morse in right, Morgan on the bench.

Mike Morse is bad in the outfield

I watched him play such bad defense in Seattle that he actually injured himself doing it. Maybe he’s a different guy now…but I doubt it.

You know who’s better at defense? Ryan Langerhans.

Just sayin’.

by short on Jul 27, 2010 7:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I forgot to mention

That before the play on which he hurt himself, I was so disgusted with his defense I was actually thinking, “Maybe he’ll just get hurt and I won’t have to watch his antics out there any more.” Literally on the next ball he tried to field, he dove and injured himself.

It still haunts me.

Well, I guess it’s what you get when you start a different guy at the last minute. Overall, success so far.
Reminds me of a joke: A man falls from a 40-story building. As he’s passing each floor, he says to himself, “so far, so good.”
It’s not the fall that counts. It’s the landing.

1. A cure for all forms of cancer.

Short of that, NO DEAL.

So there’s nothing other than routine and tradition that dictates having a standard 5 man rotation?

Why wouldn’t a team run, say, a 6 man rotation with the manager picking a different starter every day?

"Don't mind WM...he's an all-around jerk."

by Whiter Mage on Jul 27, 2010 8:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Not even that.

It’s theoretically possible to go with a 1 or 2 man rotation. Not kidding. Just don’t expect them to be throwing even 80mph fastballs every other day.

I mean, I get that, but what’s to stop the Yankees from running an 8 man “rotation” with all star starters and you have to guess which one is starting and if you don’t start, you might hit the game as a reliever? Just the comfort of confined roles?

I guess I’ll have to watch for a while. I don’t get yet why throwing is so hard depending on the inning you do it in. I get starting vs relieving – you expect the starter to go further.

by Whiter Mage on Jul 27, 2010 8:15 PM EDT up reply actions

yea, but relievers go more often, and their arms are conditioned to do so

by Doncosmic on Jul 27, 2010 8:16 PM EDT up reply actions

I know that, I’m just trying to grasp the finer mechanics. I guess that’s just the modern system, but I don’t know why you just don’t train each pitcher to go ~65 pitches a game and then out. If you use 3 pitchers a game, you use 3 pitchers a game, but don’t you carry 12 of them anyway?

"Don't mind WM...he's an all-around jerk."

by Whiter Mage on Jul 27, 2010 8:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Tricky mindset switch from starter to reliever.

Gotta appreciate this game a lot.

No Stras, the guys really stepped it up tonight. Who knew that single run would stand up?
