Game 100: Souldrummer's Vindication
- Phenom? Miguel Batista (+25.0%) comes through big-time in an emergency start, throwing 5 innings of shut-out with 6 strike outs and one walk. Remind you of anyone?
- Can I call it a comeback yet? Nyjer Morgan (+6.4%) is 1-4 with 2 SB and a run scored on a wild throw to third on his second SB (+3.7%).
- Rookie power: Ian Desmond (+6.9%) tacks on with a two-run single (+6.3%) while Drew Storen (+4.7%) throws a scoreless inning of relief with 2 Ks.
- Also rising to the occasion: Sean Burnett (+10.3%) throws two scoreless in relief, as well, striking out one. Matt Capps (+3.7%) closes it with a 1-2-3 ninth to complete the team shutout.

No offense to Batista...
…but last night’s outing seemed less likely than a stellar Morgan game.

Great recipe.

And height attribute!
I’d totally get fined if I was at work…
Sunshine will come to Nats Park, I promise.
Glad to see the Nationals got the win and shut out, to boot...
and it’s unfortunate Strasburg had to be shut down. They made the right decision pulling him out, though. He’s still getting used to the everyday grind of baseball without the benefit of a lengthy stay in the minors. No need to take unnecessary risks.
Now, I have to get back to lab and watch the Cubs not give Ted Lilly any run support in what will most likely be his last start in a Cubs uniform…Poor Ted.

Just went with the first one that made me laugh:
Brain: Pinky, are you pondering what I’m pondering?
Pinky: Are you pondering cheese sticks?

Pass on cheese sticks, but I’m fixing up a soft pretzel, I think.

Was watching the game from the gym…Batista pitched well. Glad to see him get the win.
It’s also nice to see the offense get something going after the dreadful stretch earlier this month.
"Imagine if you go see Mrs. Universe, then you end up having Mrs. Iowa. Then you might get those kind of boos." - Miguel Batista
Miguel Batista helped me get through the first five innings without launching myself from the grandstand seats.
As the import of his historic accomplishment began to set in by around the 3rd inning I started referring to him as Miguel Strasburg and informing people that his line may very well have been better than what we would have gotten from Strasburg that night. In all serious, the man might have the largest percentage gain in WAR for a midseason performance in recent memory. It will be interesting to see how long my man’s five minutes of fame lasts. The game story was okay, the yahoo story today is priceless, and I hope some other national bloggers get into the spirit. But by the end of the game as Batista, Burnett, and even Storen and Capps’ relatively stressless innings began to inspire me to a fever pitch I found the energy to walk half way around the stadium and share this moment with Faithful Member The Herndon Kid and he had to be subjected to the “Let’s Go Capps!” cheer in full throat. Hope y’all enjoyed it. I’m trying to focus on Batista’s achievement today rather than get into the whole Strasburg medical stuff until I hear next start, DL, or season shelving. None of them scares me but so much because we are learning the lessons from the Mark Prior disaster and doing our best to prevent those disasters by keeping rubber armed guys around to pick up the pieces when things go astray for our young team.
On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park.
Not really much offense...
but this gives me a chance to remind everyone, using Tues. night’s great game as an example, to envision a future National’s team built on pitching and defense. Lots of games with less than 6 runs scored by both team’s combined, and the Nats winning a fair share. Guys, this is the quickest way to respectability. But they will need to trade Dunn to accomplish this, though I liked his pick last night. And I was just thinking that during the first half of 2005, when they were leading the division at the All Star break, the team was winning with mainly pitching and defense, and just a fair offense. Personally, I found a healthy Nick Johnson to have more value than Dunn.
There is no way a healthy Nick Johnson had more value than this years Dunn
