Hey there

By the way, I replied to your post on Bunning’s career earnings. I think those have to be adjusted for inflation and standardized to today’s salary scale. Even if what he said isn’t exactly rational, he was a HOF-pitcher in an era where pitchers weren’t commodities, they were just ballplayers.

Sunshine will come to Nats Park, I promise.

Just not thinking, that's all

Considering he’s had bigger gaffes, I can live with it. Nothing more that something facetious being represented as something more.

Plus to be completely honest, I’m sure Bunning sees a little bit of himself in Strassy. Both had nasty fastballs and nastier hooks.

Sunshine will come to Nats Park, I promise.

by Mevans12 on Jul 29, 2010 4:17 PM EDT up reply actions

That isn't always necessarily the point

Smoak’s not going to replace Dunn now, but I’ll take Smoak in a heartbeat

Sunshine will come to Nats Park, I promise.

by ajk9hy on Jul 29, 2010 4:20 PM EDT up reply actions

I'll take Dunn over Smoak

every day for the next five years. I think Smoak is overrated (from the three times I’ve seen him in person).

Also I don’t think Rizzo could get a top prospect for Dunn anyway

by Mevans12 on Jul 29, 2010 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions

In the terms of a minor leaguer I know

“Smoak is nasty”. And that was just an example, speculation. Dunn’s value would not be that high anyway

Are the Astros having a fire sale?

The Astros will flip newly-acquired prospect Anthony Gose to the Blue Jays, reports ESPN’s Jayson Stark. The speedy, defensively-talented center fielder went to Houston as part of the Roy Oswalt deal.

Reed's ERA

is all of 1.62 at AAA. Seems like good value if true

by Mevans12 on Jul 29, 2010 4:28 PM EDT up reply actions

It was 1.62 at AA, not AAA

Nonetheless he is a talented guy, high strikeouts, big frame, 92-95. Rangers are pretty solid in the pen and will continue to find guys to convert to relievers in the minors, so they can part with talent to win now.

He has a high K/9 at pretty much every level, which is good. The PCL is hitter-friendly too, fwiw.

by ajk9hy on Jul 29, 2010 4:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Am I dumb?

I know that, I was just giving a specious comparison to the Ranger’s players that have played there this season, and Smoak is included there. The Rangers, loaded as they are, have like a 85 OPS+ at 1B, and that doesn’t cut it. Cantu would help that.

by ajk9hy on Jul 29, 2010 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Haren and Oswalt are the type of players that...

you have to give up good young talent for.

1) Nats have very precious little young talent
2) They should be trying to trade for more, not give any way.

This team isn’t competing for anything this year and next year. Very hard to have 10+ wins from year to year. We’re just now getting past all the damage Bowden did to this franchise. I think most people don’t understand how long it takes to build an organization. It’s like this was an expansion team.

Hi all - checking in from work right at the end of the game

Catching up on the signing chatter, I am convinced that the Bryce Harper deal will be done. Both sides have that much invested in getting Harper’s foot on that ladder to the majors. A more important signing, for me, will be A.J. Cole. He slipped to the 4th round on signability concerns. If the Nats step up and buy him away from Miami that would be a HUGE statement about the Lerners’ commitment to the team IMHO.
