Wire Taps: UPDATED: Washington Nationals Trade Cristian Guzman To Texas Rangers For Tanner Roark, Ryan Tatusko.

Update:

• INF Cristian Guzman To Rangers for RHP's Tanner Roark and Ryan Tatusko.

One of the original Washington Nationals in 2005, and one of the first free agents to choose the nation's capital as a destination, infielder Cristian Guzman's tenure with the Nats' ended this afternoon when, according to MLB.com's Bill Ladson, he was traded to the Texas Rangers in return for prospects who have yet to be identified. The Guzzzzzzz is gone...what's next....

Guzman, who is in the last year of a 2-year/$16M dollar deal signed back when Jim Bowden was the Nats' GM, was thought to be untradeable at the beginning of the season because of the high price tag, and there's no word yet on who will be responsible for the remainder of his contract or what the Nats will receive in return...

Awesome news.

Even without knowing whom the Nats got, I’m happy to see Cristian “the albatross” Guzman gone. I trust Rizzo got someone the Nats needed. Maybe more playing time for Gonzalez?

So long, Mr. Attitude.

I can’t say I’m sorry to see him go, but I’d like to know what we’re getting in return. In due time, I guess.

Eh, I didn't mind it so much.

My only problem is that Guuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuzman helped keep him a fan favorite beyond the point where his production warranted it.

pass

big time… its always so curious to me that the defense guys who cant hit gt a pass while the offense guys who cant play defense face ex communication.

the guy’s career OPS+ is 66, that’s Rey Ordonez territory, folks.

offensively

we are talking a 20 point difference in OPS+ between Kennedy and Everett…. And Kennedy can’t hit… see what i’m gettin at? It would essentially be like having a pitcher who can play defense.

Write up on Guzz from Fangraphs, nice shout out to Rizzo
For Washington, they’re capitalizing on an aggressive market that is lacking in the available stars of recent years. After snagging Wilson Ramos from Minnesota for Matt Capps, the prospects they get back from Texas could be pretty good considering that the Rangers are overpaying in farm talent for salary relief in lieu of their recent bankruptcy. However, we’ll wait and see if the bigger dominoes (Adam Dunn and Josh Willingham) fall before tomorrow’s deadline.

If the Nats wait to the offseason, they probably can't.

My worry is Morse in RF with that.

While I love his current hot bat, I’m worried it wouldn’t last if he were playing every day and pitchers had a chance to adjust. And he isn’t the greatest defender. CF/RF is still a question mark for me—Nyjer/Bernie would work, we just have to cross our fingers that late-season Nyjer can become full-season Nyjer.

Let's face it, the real reason for the last two trades was to reduce the Nats salary level. Now Guzman for two apsiring minor leaguers for the future. At the rate the Nats are going, there is no future, at least as a contender.

Now watch who theget for Dunn. It will be either straight cash ala Yankees, or again two promising minor leaguers for the future via the White Sox. I’m sick of the penny pinching!

by wxguy on Jul 30, 2010 6:49 PM EDT reply actions

The Guzman trade did not reduce salary.

We gave the Rangers 2Mil in cash to obtain better prospects. The Rangers are almost bankrupt and they don’t take on salary in their deals. It’s starting to feel like they are asking for a stay of execution to make a run in the playoffs and drive up the selling price of the team.

On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park.

by souldrummer on Jul 30, 2010 11:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Addition by subtraction

Great move by Rizzo. Given that Tatusko is 25 and at AA ball, the context of his numbers doesn’t look quite as fantastic. H’es a Grade C prospect at best, as is Roark. I’d have thought that all they’d get was one Grade C prospect, so the return may actually be better than I would have expected.

Removing Guzman alone makes this move worth while. Like the Twins move (to a far lesser extent…. The Rangers still have an incredibly deep farm system even after giving up some good prospects for Cantu and a great one for Cliff Lee, and didn’t give up too much in this deal), I like the deal for both teams. The Rangers had been rumored to be going heavily after Dan Uggla, who would have cost them a pretty penny. Dealing for Guzman is the better option here.

A) He’s far cheaper from a trade perspective
B) They must feel comfortable that Ian Kinsler will be back soon enough (don’t think he’s far, but given their lead in the division, as long as he’s back a week or two before the playoffs to get his rhythm back, they’re fine)
C) Guzman brings more versatility than Uggla, and can spell Young at third, Andrus at SS, or Kinsler (when he’s healthy)

Solid move for both teams. I’m thinking Rizzo went the way of statistical analysis a bit more with this trade, and I think that Tatusko is the guy we’re more likely to see. He’s probably another AAAA starter down the road, but hey…. what were we expecting for Cristian Guzman?

by bluelineswinger on Jul 30, 2010 7:22 PM EDT reply actions

It's kind of like the Miggy move to San Diego, minus the expected contributions-part

He gives them cover for Kinsler in the short-term (and allows for Kinsler to try to fully shake off the ankle problems he has had), and provides a great bench presence.

Since I figure that we’re kicking in almost all of his salary for this year, I would have liked to see at least one better prospect in return though.

Sunshine will come to Nats Park, I promise.

by ajk9hy on Jul 30, 2010 7:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Can't argue with that, but I wouldn't have expected it

Seems like they went for a couple of the Rangers third tier prospects instead of maybe trying to get maybe one tier two. They weren’t going to get a Scheppers or Perez by any means, but maybe a Moscoso or something.

Honestly, I think that Rizzo likes what he sees with Tatusko, and thinks that maybe he can overachieve.

The Berkman deal is a bit baffling, and troubling

The rumors surrounding the situation say that the Astros are paying a huge chunk of his remaining contract AND that they’re not getting anything other than non-prospect minor leaguers in return. To the best of my knowledge, details haven’t been made public yet (perhaps because Berkman has not officially waived his no-trade clause), but you have to wonder whether the Yankees cheap acquisition of a similar (but lesser at this point in their careers) player drives the asking price on Dunn down.

Then again, it could have the reverse effect. I’ve said from the start that the Rays are the best fit both in terms of having players who can match up AND having a legitimate need for a player like Dunn. The Yankees’ acquisition of Berkman could force their hand and make them go overboard, particularly since they’re a division rival (both figure to make the playoffs, but there’s a big difference in the ALCS between having Adam Dunn and Gabe Kapler/Willie Aybar in your lineup).

The shame of the whole Berkman thing is that the word on the street is that the White Sox had a deal completed for him earlier in the day (where they presumably would have done better, though not great) and Berkman nixed it.

by bluelineswinger on Jul 30, 2010 8:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I say shame

Because I want no part of Edwin Jackson, and I’ll lose all the positive feelings that the Capps/Ramos trade gave me if Rizzo were crazy enough to deal Dunn (at least straight up) for Jackson. I’d have been happier getting Hudson (even if it were straight up) than Jackson.

The laugher is that the Diamondbacks probably got more for Edwin Jackson than they did for Dan Haren.

by bluelineswinger on Jul 30, 2010 8:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, the D'backs went from fools to jewels in a day.

I’m with you on happier for Hudson than Jackson. If the ChiSox were willing to move Hudson for EJax, you better be dead sure that EJax is at least a credible 3rd starter next year.

On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park.
