It's been a good day so far in Natstown ...

I’ll be cheering for Capps to get the Twins as far as the Yankees in the playoffs – he’s really impressed me with the way he handled this year. And Gooz, love him or hate him, at times was the only high average hitter in our lineup (which says more about our lineup than it does about Gooz).

Rizzo has really impressed me with both of these moves – the two prospects for Gooz may be a bucket of baseballs, but this organization could use some institutional depth – and the catcher for Capps is an excellent leveraging of a one year contract. Let’s close the day by shutting up some Phans :-)

Agreed it has been a good day

Except that Stammen vs. the Phillies = probably a disaster.

HAH... I agree with you.

I wonder if he’ll make it out of the first inning.. I’m not too excited to watch tonight b/c I hate seeing/hearing all those stinkin’ philly fans… but nothing would make me happier than if we beat them tonight and shut them up.

They aren't going to trade Dunn

Heard this: The Nationals are frustrated in their attempts to get equal value for Adam Dunn, and conversely, rival teams are saying that the asking price for Dunn is enormous. This is why the Yankees turned away from the Dunn talks and snagged the player they perceive to be the second-best DH type on the market, Lance Berkman — figuring the Rays might have turned to Berkman if they had ultimately lost out on Dunn. It’s like a game of musical chairs.

Yuck

8:08pm: The Yankees are sending Mark Melancon and Jimmy Paredes to the Astros for Berkman, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post (via Twitter).

Melancon had brief stints with the Yankees this year and last year, but most of his pro experience has come in the minor leagues. The right-hander has a 3.67 ERA in Triple A this year with 9.3 K/9 and 5.0 BB/9. The high walk rate is alarming, but the 25-year-old had never posted a walk rate higher than 2.3 BB/9 at any minor league stop before this year.

Apparently that’s the Astros return for Berkman……….. after kicking in $4 of the $7.5 million to pay him the rest of this year and buy him out next year.

He's not exactly having a banner year

And at 34 and coming off of an injury, he’s not exactly at the point in his career where he should be expected to turn it around completely. That said, his .372 OBP is nothing to sneeze at (average is down, walks are up, slugging is down considerably)

by bluelineswinger on Jul 30, 2010 9:32 PM EDT up reply actions

I think anyone paying attention knew that Berkman was gone when they got Wallace

I just don’t think anyone thought that they’d do this poorly for Berkman. The rumor is that he rejected a trade to the White Sox earlier in the day….. in the same article, he was quoted as saying (about his no trade clause):

“My ideal situation is to win a title here. If this organization feels those aims are better accomplished by trying to strip down this roster and reload with younger guys, I don’t want to stand in the way of that.”

I don’t think their return from the White Sox would have been stellar or anything, but they could have used a guy like Morel or even Flowers. I think they would have gotten one of them.

Honestly, I'm just hoping he doesn't get traded to the White Sox

Partially because I know Jackson will be part of the return if that’s the case (and I’d rather have seen the Nats get Hudson than Jackson)… Partially because I really don’t like the White Sox very much, and I’d like to be able to cheer for Dunn to win the World Series wherever he goes.

When I first went nuts with the post about whether they should sell or not, I said the Rays were by far the best fit, and that’s where I see him going. I still stand by that now, though I thought for a long time he was headed to the south side of Chicago.
