Washington Nationals' Ryan Zimmerman Hits Walk-Off HR To Beat San Diego Padres, 6-5 final.

WASHINGTON - JULY 06: Teammates wait to congratulate Ryan Zimmerman #11 of the Washington Nationals after hitting the game winning home run in the ninth inning against the San Diego Padres at Nationals Park on July 6 2010 in Washington DC. Tonight's Top 5: VOTE FOR ZIM!!!

5. Walks = Runs For Everyone!!: Livan Hernandez walks Tony Gwynn, Jr. in the first AB of the game, and a Jerry Hairston, Jr. grounder gets by the mound and up the middle for a single and two on for Adrian Gonzalez. Gonzalez lines out to second, but a wild pitch with Scott Hairston up moves Gwynn and Hairston, Jr. to second and third so Scott Hairston's sac fly makes it 1-0 Padres after a half...San Diego lefty Clayton Richard gives up a leadoff single to Nyjer Morgan and back-to-back two-out walks to Adam Dunn and Josh Willingham and takes a Pudge Rodriguez' Future-Hall-of-Fame grounder off the foot before throwing low to first where Adrian Gonzalez bobbles it as Morgan scores. Dunn and the Hammer score when Michael Morse hits a two-run single to center, 3-1 Nats when both of Richard's walks score...VOTE FOR ZIM!!!

4. THE KIDS CALL HIM...VOTE FOR ZIM!!! Livan gives up singles to three of the first four Padres he faces in the third, with the third of three scoring San Diego's second run, 3-2, then 4-2 in the fourth when Ryan Zimmerman crushes a hanging 1-1 change inside from Clayton Richard and sends it into the seats above the visitor's bullpen in left. The wall there is 377ft, so call it 395ft and 4-2 Nats on Zim's 15th HR of 2010..VOTE FOR ZIM!!! 10 TIMES BEFORE YOU READ ON...VOTE FOR ZIM!!!

Star-divide

3. Ian Desmond Likes Clayton Richard!!! The Washington Nationals' beleaguered shortstop Ian Desmond is coming back to life, and the 24-year-old infielder launches a HR to left and into the visitor's bullpen in the fifth for a 5-2 Nats' lead and what would end up a very important run. Desmond's 5th HR of 2010 is his first since May 28, 2010 when Desmond hit his 4th HR of the year out of PETCO Field off of, yes, Clayton Richard, in a 5-3 Washington win over San Diego. 107 at bats between HR's 4-5, for anyone counting...

2. Mr. National Does It Again: The Nats' 35-year-old right-hander Livan Hernandez throws 111 pitches in 7.0 IP before he's lifted after surrendering back-to-back singles to Adrian Gonzalez and Scott Hairston in the top of the eighth. The Nats' veteran starter holds the visiting team to 9 hits and 2 ER while he's on the mound, walking two and striking out four, then two more score when he's replaced by right-hander Tyler Clippard, who gives up back-to-back singles, the second an RBI hit by Padres' catcher Yorvit Torrealba and a sac fly by Aaron Cunningham to make it 5-4 Nationals with runners on first and second and one down. Nats' lefty Sean Burnett takes over for Clippard and gets the grounder he wants out of pinch hitter Oscar Salazar, Cristian Guzman fields at second and backhands it low to Ian Desmond, who takes second, jumps the runner and throws...wide of first. Chase Headley, who'd hit the first of two singles off Clippard, scores the tying run. E: 21 for Desmond, E: 73 for the Nationals, tie game at 5-5 after eight and a half...

1. Desmond AGAIN!!!: Padres' outfielder Scott Hairston doubles to left with two down and Jerry Hairston, Jr. on first in the top of the ninth, and Hairston, Jr. thinks he can score, Josh Willingham comes up throwing, hits the cutoff man, Ian Desmond, and Desmond's throw beats the runner to the plate, Pudge makes the tag, still 5-5 after eight and a half...VOTE FOR ZIM!!! THE KIDS CALL HIM ZIM!!! THE KIDS CALL HIM ZIM!!!! WALK-OFF WINNER!!!: Ryan Zimmerman gets a 1-0 fastball inside from Padres' reliever Luke Gregorson and the Nats' Face of the Franchise hits another one of his trademark walk-off HR's, this one to center and over the 409ft sign for a 6-5 Nats' win!!! Nats' All-Star Matt Capps gets the win for the scoreless ninth, the Nats win!! VOTE FOR ZIM!!!

Yep.

Zim’s surge is happening about a week too late. If he had gone nuts a week ago, then we’d be talking about how he’s more deserving than Scott Rolen and how he should have gotten named over Scott Rolen instead of the whole Omar Infante brouhaha.

Wright earned his slot and there’s nothing I can do to make the case for Zim over Wright unless you want to start factoring last season’s post all-star break into the equation (which is the real reason you’d make the case for Zim over Votto). Second half of last year, Zim had a .969 OPS to Votto’s .946OPS with 19HR to Votto’s 14HR in a significantly tougher ballpark.

That was fun

That was a fun game. It was misery watching them blow the lead and pretty much knowing that it was coming. I really felt the dread sinking in when Livan started the inning and then when two runners got on it got real bad. Desmond’s error was bad, but it is something he can learn from and hopefully next year without the extreme pitch to contact staff and more experience he can really cut down on the errors.

I believe the vuvuzela is the instrument of choice these days...

Anyone up for a rally with vuvuzelas outside the park?

Maybe an hour before the gates open for one of Strasburg’s games?

Let me remind you that the Marlins....

…are the team most associated with the vuvuzelas. We need the “Let’s Go Caps!” horns.

It was a reference to his radio commercial

Get him to Syracuse bullpen as a flyer.

September callup for a “story”? Can’t see much else. Maybe trying to set up an org role for the Hernandez brothers. Might help our pathetic international situation. Of course, Chapman’s ridiculous contract might have helped more. Intersting note on that: the Reds have had him in the ’pen his last few outings.

by souldrummer on Jul 7, 2010 10:05 AM EDT up reply actions

He’s in the ‘pen because the Reds are contending, it’s like Price. They wouldn’t call him up before he is ready except for the fact that their BP is lacking and they are contending. They still want him to be a starter.

by Doncosmic on Jul 7, 2010 2:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I get that for sure.

I thought that they’d want to get him in the rotation as Harang insurance. Perhaps Wood’s decent start has them less inclined to go that direction and I guess they are bullish on Volquez returning to form as well.

If y'all are serious about this...

…you need to campaign for the man at other DC sites, especially those related to the ’Skins. If every ’Skins fan voted 5 times, the man would win in a landslide.

Don't usually hit that board, but done.

Hey folks, I realize that’s it’s offseason in Redskins land, and that the LeBron debate is sucking up a lot of airspace here and elsewhere. But don’t Wizards fan hate LeBron. Who cares where he lands? We’ll boo him anyways. Guy’s the Travelling Man who believes it’s his divine right to hold the NBA hostage.

Focus on the positive folks. Nats had a big win last night. Strasburg goes Friday. And Ryan Zimmerman could really use your help as he tries to get over the hump in NL All-Star Final Vote balloting. If you want to vote Zim, you can here.

Patrick Reddington if you are serious about your campaign...

…you need to step up to the plate and cross promote. Everybody on Federal Baseball knows that you are a Pens fan and probably root for Sidney. You have to take the fight to Japers’ if you want the votes to win. You have to take the vote to the ‘Skins fan. Make some crazy claim like you’ll go to Nyjer Morgan Bobblehead day in an Ovechkin jersey or something and put your fandom where you’re mouth is. Put it on Japers’ Rink. If you make it crazy enough, you might get your way to the DC Sports Bog and get some Redskins’ votes along the way.

But posting amongst this intimate gathering of Nats fans is not going to get this done. Red Reporter outnumbers us like 10 to one and they post at like 3 to 1 and they are posting like 50 times per head. So unless everyone here wants to post like 500 times at a minimum, you ain’t going to get it done.

You’ve got me on your team until at least Zim’s first at bat. If Zim craters tonight, it’s back to merit for me and Votto.

who is your AL pick?

I put Konerko and Zim 15 times each

by Rickfansince76 on Jul 7, 2010 10:49 AM EDT reply actions

This is a tougher call for me because I barely follow the AL

1) Youkilis probably deserves it the most. But he’s a BoSox and partnering with the Votto lobby so he’ll probably win anyways.
2) You could make a case that Rios deserves it more than Konerko on his own team. I started voting Konerko, though, because I felt he was my best nonBoSox option.
3) After Zim’s game, I started voting for Michael Young because if Zim’s going to go on a tear he deserves to get his Veep.

And like I said in my fanpost, it get’s tougher for me to vote Zim even if he shows signs of slumping again. Votto had the better first half and Zim kind of squandered his shot and his coverage with his June Swoon.

Anybody but Youkilis

There’s just something about him that irritates me. Maybe it’s the mindless RSN chant of “YOOOOUUUK,” maybe it’s that stupid goatee thing on his face.

I admit it’s not quite rational LOL
