Game 117: Not good. Not good at all.
- When does rehab finish? Jason Marquis (-32.2%) labors through 4+ innings, giving up 5 ER on 7 hits, 3 HR, 2BB, and only 2 Ks. Miguel Batista (-10.9%) doesn't help with a 1-inning, 5-hit, 3-run relief outing.
- Hammer time! Josh Willingham (+6.0%) is 2-3 with a walk. Really, that's the best total offensive contribution from tonight. Nationals are 1-11 with RISP, 6 team LOB.
- First pitch swinging: Ryan Zimmerman (+1.7%) jacks a solo shot to bring the Nats within 2 early (+8.7%).
- Number one in the NL! Ivan Rodriguez (-14.1%) wears the GDP crown with a RISP inning-ender in the 5th (-11.4%).

Stupid closers.
We bring in Carr instead of Wilkie and he immediately gives up a leadoff double.

Just not good enogh...all the way around.
Lots of dead wood at the plate and…
lots of balls-not-coming-out-the-hand-good throwing on the mound.
UGH, ugh, ugh.

Right now, we just don't have all of the horses we need in the rotation and we have too many out machines.
I’m still not giving up. It’s going to be hard for me not to get more hyped out affiliate pennant races than non-divisional games going down the stretch. Let’s get a series win in a Strasburg start and get some hope back before we head down to Atlanta.

I don't think there's a HUGE problem with out machines
Yes, the team does have some. But a team of Bernie/Desi/Dunn/Zim/Hammer/Kennedy/Pudge/xx/yy should be able to score some runs.
I think the big problem, for which I have no solution, is that the team very rarely strings together a bunch of hits. Crooked numbers in the Nats’ line occur way too infrequently considering the overall quality (especially the power) of the hitters.

To get crooked number, you've got to get rallies where you have 7,8,9 guys come to the plate.
To do that, you need threats up and down your order.
Tonight’s lineup was what Bernie, Desi, Dunn, Zim, Hammer, Kennedy, Pudge, Harris, pitcher.
OBP’s for that lineup:
Bernie – .332
Desi – .300
Dunn – .358
Zim – .390
Hammer – .385
Kennedy – .326
Pudge – .301
Harris – .287
What concerns me most about that lineup is the steep change from the Bernie/Desi to Dunn and the Hammer to Kennedy/Pudge. To me, that means it is much less likely for guys to be on base for our boppers and much less likely for the bottom third of our lineup to hit our boppers home when they are pitched around or only hitting singles. Pudge of course, is even worse than his line suggests because of his league leading 21 double plays.
The way for us to get around are problem seems to me to be either to have additional sluggers after Hammer (Ramos, Espinosa?) or more protypical OBP guys in the one and two spots so that our current sluggers can bash those in.
I’m rambling because it’s late. We probably agree on most of this stuff and are just differing on the semantics of “out machine”.
If we can even get competence out of some of the other positions in the lineup than we are on our way. Ramos could be the upgrade over Pudge that’s needed. He’ll have more power although it doesn’t look like he’ll get on base much more. Espinosa could be the upgrade over Kennedy. He’ll certainly have more power, but I don’t know whether he’ll get on base much more.

The team looks horrible.
Glad I didn’t miss a ten game winning streak while I was away…and I hope to not be away much longer.
Hope you're feeling up to watching a win tomorrow.
And that the team wins one for you tomorrow.
