Around SBN: The Ten Worst Swings Of The 2011 Season

Nationals News: Jordan Zimmermann, sooner rather than later

Jordan Zimmermann has come off the disabled list and was optioned to AAA Syracuse. He made six rehab starts and accrued a 2.38 ERA.

Derek Norris says that he's excited to play in the AFL this fall, particularly because he was kept out last season with a hamate injury sustained during the final at bat of the 2009 season.

John Lannan made his return to the major league rotation on Sunday, going five innings and allowing two runs. He wasn't at his best, but Steve McCatty said that he was "back to what [he's] used to seeing," a good thing to say about the Nats' Opening Day starter.

Atahualpa Severino was optioned to AAA Syracuse on Sunday, Justin Maxwell will be called up to take his place today. Severino didn't make his MLB debut during this stint with the major league club.

The Nats finished their homestand 4-2, winning both series against the Braves and the Phillies. Jim Riggleman says that the Nats aren't that far from competing.

Stephen Strasburg has resumed playing catch and hopes to be pitching again soon, but the Nats are certainly going to handle him very carefully. He's eligible to come off the disabled list on August 6, but likely won't come back that early.

Nyjer Morgan was heckled on Nyjer Morgan bobblehead night by Phillies fans. Watch the video on Nats Enquirer.

The future is bright

You could be waiting for peter angelos to die, as opposed to waiting a couple years for some bats to finish developing.

That AFL stint is going to really determine Norris' expectations for next year.

If he lights it up or shows radically improved defense, he’ll be Top 50 or Top 100 on some prospect lists. If he continues to show the injury influenced holding pattern, he’ll remain the highly debated high ceiling prospect that he currently is.

The Nyjer Morgan post is a tricky one.

The right field out of town scoreboard seats at the wall was probably the most concentrated area of Philly fans at the park. Don’t know how they do it, but I remember sitting there in a heavy Mets fan area during my first game at Nats Park. I didn’t here too much there that totally shocked me from the Philly fans. They’re loud, they’re proud, and certainly not my favorite people there, but I heard of worse incidents from ushers and got some evidence of the “us against the world” mentality that Philly fans crave. I think by Sunday, I was more kill ‘em with kindness, prepare to gently remind them of how expensive they are when they lose, and try to show that we are more intelligent fans than they are and love our players more than they do. A particularly fun one for me is when I complemented Eagles’ front office on the bus home after the game. They then said “Well, our front office makes a bunch of mistakes, too.” Then I’m like “I’m a Redskins fan, I know mistakes! And you can’t even name me a major national joke mistake that you guys have made. You guys are still down on McNabb who should be a hero in Philadelphia. My hope is that the McNabb trade represents a new era in DC sports, but I’m not counting on it because I don’t like an IQ test between Andy Reid and Eagles ownership vs. Mike Shanahan the GM and ’Skins ownership.” Guy eventually had to admit I knew more about football than he did, and fellow Redskins fans felt proud feeling that at least if we put together a winning team, we’ll know how to act.

As far Nyjer, Nyjer kind of plays into a lot of stuff by interacting with the crowd during most games. It’s part of what makes him a fan favorite for some Nats fans and a fan target when he doesn’t realize that there’s so many Philly fans in the RF outfield and they’re going to feel empowered to heckle him. As always, you ignore the trolls and silence them with your play. Ryan Zimmerman was totally and completely dissed by Charlie Manuel when he picked Omar Infante over Zim for the all-star game. I believe he has at least one game in the standings lost to making that man mad after the Zim walkoff bomb.

Likewise one of the better heckles for me was on Saturday...

…all of these Philly fans for me were walking away with Nyjer Morgan bobbleheads so for the 90 min before the game I was like "Y’all are the most intelligent fans and passionate fans. [yeah, yeah, yeah]. You are the losingest franchise in MLB history, but you stick by your team. [yeah, yeah, yeah]. You have been rewarded with championships in 1980, and 2008 and you’ve had a two year stranglehold on the NL pennant because your FO has built the team wisely (yeah, yeah, yeah). So after all of this I have a question for the most intelligent passionate fans in the world. [What is it?] Why would a Philly fan who loves the Phillies take a Nyjer Morgan bobblehead into his home? [watch hilarious mental gymnastics ensue] Could post elsewhere on this stuff you’re interested but as always I think my focus needs to be on our wins and losses and our organization more than getting distracted with too many Philly incidents.

Good look, Quinner.

I don't see the logic, or benefit

in antagonizing or trash-talking the Phills fans. If I happen to be one of the few that goes to an away game with my team’s colors on, and I am just quietly/respectfully enjoying the game but some local starts talking smack (playfully or not), that would only encourage me to do the same, and to yell louder, etc. Or, if I’m one of the loud ones already and get the trash, then this would not only encourage me, but it would almost certainly REQUIRE me to get louder, because the DC fans apparently LIKE it.

I also want my team cheered loudly when they succeed and rooted hard when they want to rally.

Philly fans in general make life miserable for the home team, one of their unique qualities. I go to baseball games to socialize to and I like socializing with the opposition some. I prefer to use the term “engage” or “heckle” rather than antagonizing or trash-talking. There’s a tension in baseball between the “quietly/respectfully enjoying the game” types and the shouter hype machine fans. I’m more comfortable as a shouter who is genuinely annoyed by the majority of Philly fans and wants to repay them with some discomfort. I think ultimately there’s different sections of the ballpark for both sides. Even when finances improve, I’ll still probably go to a bunch of games in the grandstand because that’s a better for the shouters. When I’m in the 200s, I try to be respectful of those who paid a premium to sit there or who are more likely to have established section norms. I commented elsewhere that my one moderate incident with overly trash talking or talking smack with a Mets fan after the Strasburg start Pudge walkoff is not something I’m particularly proud of.

I hope

We use all the extra money the Phillies fans brought us to buy Jayson Werth.

by David Huzzard on Aug 2, 2010 12:51 PM EDT reply actions

Not me.

Werth’s in a good lineup and a good ballpark and has been contractually motivated the last two years. I prefer Crawford, but I may prefer the subtler Giants get AubreyHuffesque shorter term moves for next year while we wait to rebuild. I don’t know enough about the 2012 free agency to know whether it’s better to use our powder this offseason or next offseason.

I hope we use the extra money they gave us to sign Cole.

So,

when’s Zimmermann coming back up? I could easily watch the rest of the season without John Lannan on the mound.

I felt for you that whole start.

I knew some people were going to use the two runs as a benchmark for justifying more Lannan starts. I also knew that you were probably going bananas inside with the HBP coming around to score, backwards pitching, lack of Ks, and reliance on the heavy strand rate. And this start was lacking in the other Cool Hand Lannan trademark, the pitch count limiting double play. Whether that’s due to stuff or luck I don’t know, but that’s what he’s got to get if he wants to go the 6IP for start that will keep him in MLB. He’s certainly in real danger of not making the rotation next year because I believer Maya indicates that the new administration will be more loyal to Stammen’s stuff and Livo’s respectability saving service than Lannan’s toiling for the 100-loss teams.
