"Mike Rizzo: I don't understand the concept of, they're frustrated with me. They knew exactly what we were asking for. The conversations were oftentimes short, because they knew what we were asking for. They didn't waver one bit throughout the process."
"Well see, Mike, the reason everyone else is frustrated is because, typically, these things are done via negotiation, and in a negotiation, both sides start with extreme positions, negotiate and eventually end up somewhere in the middle. They don't start with an extreme position and keep asking the other side reach to reach extreme position over and over again."

I’d kill for it to just take half that amount of time for ARod

There are a lot of similar names.” “A lot of these kids are not born in a hospital environment.” “Asia, when I was with Boston, we were really aggressive in Asia.” “But it’s a very competitive market over there.” “They’re more big league ready, but they’re more costly also.”

Is it a coincidence of scheduling or are the nats getting a lot more MASN1 love this season?
bmore isnt playing tonight so tonight’s not an example but it seems like it’s gone from no dc baseball to no dc baseball on TV to Angelos only allowing games to be broadcast when I’m at work to them playing second fiddle on MASN2 most nights to this.
It doesnt really matter to me either way because even though I have fios I dont have the HD tv but I’ve grown used to turning the TV to MASN2 only to find a bunch of orange lately. Funny thing is even though it doesn’t matter to me in practicality, i feel just a little bit better when nats are on 1 and bmore is on 2

Hey, I know your position on a lot of things.
You would have traded for Hudson I’m sure, and in the long run that probably would have been the best objective move.
On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park. In Rizzo and Ramos we trust.
Sums it up a bit
Tend to agree with the Rosenthal tweet that Rizzo was using the White Sox to drive interest more than anything.
But yeah… I’d have been content with Hudson + one of the bats that were being thrown around. Who knows…. Assuming that the White Sox were still willing to go Jackson + maybe they could have gotten Holmberg thrown in there, too (the other guy in the Jackson trade).
All moot now.

Hope you'll get your thoughts on record at some point.
That post on FJB about the Soriano trade was tremendously informative for me. I’m glad at least that the three other moves help the sting out of this. I’m not overjoyed yet. Certainly that game with the Dunn introduction and Zim walkoff is one of my all-time Nats fan highlights. But so was the Strasburg start, and the team has been I don’t know how many games under .500 since then.
I’m appreciating more and more about the human side and fan side of baseball and the fans are what make Dunn more valuable to us than some other teams, and that’s why they held him.
On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park. In Rizzo and Ramos we trust.
I imagine that the fans were the reason that they kept him around
In a sense, it sends a message that the team isn’t going to continually try and trade away players in the last year of their contract. It gives the impression that the team is moving forward, rather than trying to go in perpetual rebuilding mode.
Moreso than that, I truly don’t think that Rizzo got an offer that he liked enough. As all we’re privy to are rumors about what the offers were, I can’t really say whether he got an offer that probably should have been good enough to move him (in my eyes or the eyes of the general public). The whole situation played out positively and negatively for Rizzo in terms of his reputation both with Nats fans and around the league.
As for your question about my thoughts being on record, I’ll have something up by Wednesday at the latest. I was clearly the most outspoken of the “trade Dunn” people on the site, writing several articles about it leading up to the deadline. I see positives and I see negatives about not dealing him, and I’m going to try and give it a hardcore analytical approach from all angles. I’d have tried writing something up on Saturday, but my work week (restaurant biz) generally runs Thursday through Tuesday instead of the more traditional work week.

…you also hope that some of the analysis and interview pieces gets some more visitors to trust us a bit and offer their thoughts.
On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park. In Rizzo and Ramos we trust.
Hey, it's all good.
I don’t think Rizzo is a fan concerned. I think he is more Zim concerned, and he wanted to reward the core for doing well amidst adverse circumstances. I’ve posted elsewhere that Rizzo’s gambling on one of three things happening:
1) Dunn’s character and his genuine desire to remain in DC allowing him to at least win tiebreaking offers. No leaving for an immediate contender that matches the Nats.
2) The market for Dunn in the NL being not but so strong and Dunn not lying when he says he doesn’t want to DH.
3) His ability to draft effectively in a strong draft class, especially with extra money to go after overslot guys, should he be stuck with the picks leaving.
Jury’s still out, but I can at least understand the process. Had we not gotten Maya, I’d probably be critical because I’d think they are being overly optimistic about pitching. But as is, the jury is still out, and I remain a fan who roots for my team, wants to enjoy the joy of other fans who wanted Dunn, and trusts the FO in comparison to the perpetual fail of the previous administration.
On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park. In Rizzo and Ramos we trust.
I can see all of those angles, and I think it's good to reward Zimm
I assumed that he would progress as a player these past two years regardless of whether the team had gone out and gotten a bat like Dunn, but Dunn’s protection and experience certainly haven’t hurt his development.
My bet is that Rizzo tries to sneak Dunn through waivers to keep his options open, but there’s no way he’d clear them completely. Someone will place a claim (Boston would certainly, if he slipped that far down the pipeline) if only to block the competition.
Perhaps my biggest concern is that re-signing Dunn suddenly has to become the focus of the offseason. Dunn’s terrific, he’s popular with the fans, he’s a good clubhouse influence, and he and Zimm seem tight. That said, there may be better options (not saying at 1b) that the Nats could have tried to use that money to go after.
They still can, and it’s not my money. However, that’s a significant portion of the budget, and the decision not to trade him says that they have to show that they felt he was valuable beyond just putting a few more butts in the seats and a handful of extra curly Ws in the standings in the final two months of 2010.
by bluelineswinger on Aug 2, 2010 10:25 PM EDT up reply actions
See that's the thing.
We really don’t know what the maximum budget is. And we have no idea how the Lerners will budget for a contending team. For a loser, it’s clear they won’t spend but so much. For a winner, they have to be listening to Ted Leonsis and see that there’s a time for getting aggressive if you ever want to break through the fleeting attentions of the potential Washington season ticket base. You hope that this is a sign that they are either going to be very aggressive with Dunn or spend the money on Dunn ably for other commodities.
On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park. In Rizzo and Ramos we trust.
The most frustrating thing about Soriano...
…is that they basically pocketed the money from not signing Soriano it seems to me. That kind of violated their trust with the fans because it made it seem that they were just trying to make money and built a reputation that they seemed to be whole hog in with Bowden’s cheap dumpster diving. In a lot of ways you have a contrast in styles. Ted Leonsis gets overagressive with spending when he first comes in. On the flip, the Lerners are probably overaggressive with saving and hurt themselves with the fans. You hope Strasburg and Harper will be worth the sacrifice. But the sacrifice reservoir from Nats fans is almost run dry. I don’t know if there’s a season ticket holder on this site who would have been happy if Dunn wasn’t resigned and these are the more knowledgable season ticket holders that take the time to join the community here.
On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park. In Rizzo and Ramos we trust.

Kind of liking the late start time
Gave me a chance to watch Jeremy Hellickson’s debut for the Rays. Second best rookie starter I’ve seen this year…..
Topped off in the low 90s, but with nasty movement, fantastic change in the low 80s, late breaking curve in the 74-76 range. Great poise. 3 H, 2 BB, 1 HBP, 2 R, 6 K against a tough Twins team that was coming in on an 8 game winning streak.
Yeah I watched a lot of that too
He looked solid. Definitely looked like he had some years under his belt, great poise as you mentioned
What you watching it on?
I checked in with D’Back’s gamethread and the thread on Minorleagueball.com as well. Certainly lived up to expectations, and he was so dominant you almost wonder why they didn’t move somebody for the deal with Dunn or someone else.

Some of those load very slowly via your site and will hammer your bandwidth. Just a thought. It’s kind of a standard way to showcase some of your work. From the web site
Ball hits centerfield wall, girders or face of overhang in center field, between yellow lines and bounces back to field – IN PLAY. Ball hits center field wall between yellow lines and caroms over shorter fence – HOME RUN.
- Ball hits above yellow line in batters eye and bounces back to field – HOME RUN. Ball hits yellow line and bounces back – IN PLAY.

I'd rather have Balester than MacDougal.
But I’d rather have Balester in AAA. Balester’s velocity is solid, and if he harvests his stuff can be a solid and affordable relief contributor.
On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park. In Rizzo and Ramos we trust.
Agree to disagree on this one methinks.
He’s also had mutltiple MLB relief opportunities to show that he is not capable of getting the ball over the plate consistently. Bally had a hard time getting through the rotation multiple times as a starter and probably didn’t have the makeup to construct a game multiple times through with MLB hitters. He needs more control over his high velocity stuff, but I was impressed with what I saw both nights, and i wish that he had gotten the one pitch he needed to be the hero yesterday. I’m always going to be biased in front of our homegrown guys, though.

I hate the Red Sox more than the Yankees. At least the Yankees come out and say they’re going to spend what it takes to win. The Red Sox complain about the Yankees and then just outspend everyone else. They rank a clear #1 on my MLB teams that I just can’t stand list.
That said, reports (from the Indians broadcasters… again, haven’t seen the replay. Don’t know if he got run over or if it was a hook slide that caught him wrong or what… I know that Kalish was out on the play) were that it was a clean play.

Didn’t see the replay, but saw them wrapping him up and carrying him to the cart. Looks done for (at least) the year. A real shame for him, and a shame for our former Mannyger.
The plus for our old Mannyger is that they got something for Kearns (not much, but…….) and they now have their best relief pitcher in the closer’s role without having to showcase Kerry Wood instead of him.

Those Stammen bunt attempts over the weekend were truly horrifying.
Almost as horrifying as Riggles asking him to bunt in the first place as a .600plus OPS guy with men on 1st and 2nd and one out. Riggles appears to believe that Stammen can’t actually hit because it’s physically impossible for pitcher’s to hit. The one thing that the guy obviously does well he gives him little chance to deliever on. Stammen’s hitting ability should allow him to stay in games longer (save pinch hitters), get the position player treatment for sacrifice bunts (because he can’t bunt and hits well), and earn him the occasional pinch hitting appearance.

To me that's not a bad call
- With Nyjer running you know that he won’t get doubled up on a home-1st play
- If you don’t run he’s out at first anyway
I think assuming one out on an infield hit, it’s worth the gamble to score knowing if you don’t there’s a man on 3rd anyway with the same amount of outs there would have been had you not tried to score. . . or something like that
Pude looked safe on that one...

Storen's getting loose.
Will be interesting to see how Riggles plays it. The Brain suggest Burnett to start it off with the two lefties and Storen to face the righties. That would make sense given Storen’s splits so far. Storen’s got to improve against lefties if he’s going to be a legit big league closer.
