Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Will Never Top Michael Jordan

Mock Decent; Eury Perez Swipes Shorebirds; Minors Report 8/19

Probably the biggest news in the minors today is that Jordan Zimmermann is scheduled to make what could be his final start for Syracuse in the final game of the series against the Louisville Bats. It will be a matchup against Aaron Harang, who is also expected to contribute to the Reds playoff efforts down the stretch. I'm very curious to see how Zimmermann does against Cincinnati catching prospect Devin Mesoraco. Devin Morasco's hit grand slams against our pitchers in back to back games and victimized Syracuse starter Andrew Kohn (L, 1-4) in a Chiefs 6-2 loss to the Louisville Bats.

Jesus Valdez was the offensive bright spot in a 5-3 Harrisburg loss to Erie. He had a 2RBI and plated all 3RBI in the game. Garrett Mock's rehab start was spoiled by a three run home run in his final inning of work. Mock's line: 5IP, 4R, 6H, 4BB, 0K, 3R HR, HBP. Hagerstown played a doubleheader after last night's rain out. In Game 1, three 9th inning errors ruined a solid start by Paul Demny and an outstanding 2-3, 2RBI, 4 steal night for Eury Perez in a 4-3 Hagerstown loss to Delmarva. In game 2, they bounced back with 2RBI each from shortstop Rick Hague and catcher Adrian Nieto. Potomac was rained out.

Not a fan of the 0K/4BB stat for Mock.

That doesn’t help my cred. And, of course, it’s all about me.

Yeah, I forgot about that part when I said "decent".

Point for the grizz. ;-)

Eury Perez is on a serious hot streak. That trip to the Futures game really helped his development.

I personally think that him and Marrero can be everyday starters for us someday.

Hope Perez channels his inner Juan Pierre. I’ll be interested to see where you stand if a rising Perez is challenging Nyjer Morgan for a starting job in two or three years, though. ;-)

Well if Eury performs in the majors,

It will be hard to keep nyjer on the roster as well. Hopefully we will just trade him to a contender(nyjer).

Thankfully...

we probably have at least 3 years until the Juan Pierre showdown happens.

Both of those guys get the positive side of Juan Pierre comps.

Fast as the dickens. Raw. Zero pop. Range but not arm in the outfielder. If they have the contact and the smarts, they could be Juan Pierre without the caught stealings.

Juan Pierre has had a decent MLB career. He had 10.6 WAR (baseball-refence.com) his first 6 seasons in the league. The bad in there was a -.2WAR season in 2005 where bad defense and a cratering OBP, flipped him into bizarro Juan Pierre, the creature that the Dodgers paid way too much for starting in 2007. I think the trick with these guys is that the main tool is there speed and getting on base by any means necessary to get steals.

FWIW, so far Eury Perez has been solid with the CS and has had an 80% success rate on the basepaths.

Nyjer, however, is flirting with bizarro Juan Pierre with the caught stealings and cratering OBP this year and drop in defensive performance.

i just don't value speed/no arm/low OBP types.

if you’re not going to provide any power at all, you’ve got to get on base at an elite level, 375 or better, to make yourself useful. we’re not going to know anything about Eury for another year of two. he just turned 20.

Indeed

Bill James’ RC stat is pretty telling. For a guy hitting .285/.342/.371 in 380 PAs, the marginal value of 10 stolen bases with no CS is less than 2 runs (a 4% increase), about the same as turning five outs into five walks.

Where'd you get that Bill James one from...

…I have to tell you that in the weeks I had The HIstorical Abstract from the library I learned a bunch.

...or you've got to provide elite defense.

For me, the problem with all of the Juan Pierre types is that the defense isn’t there as much as you’d like it to be when you look at the advanced stats.

I don’t disagree with you on disliking these guys. At the moment, though they are our guys and that’s who we’ve drafted. So I’m going to root for them until better alternatives arrive.

Are you in the JMax lobby? That’s really the only alternative we have for CF right now as close to a prospect. I don’t know enough about guys below Eury. Rizzo seems to prefer to stockpile middle infielders and college arms over upside OF talent.

It would be much easier if Burgess or Hood were credible in CF. Burgess is too slow, though he’s got a cannof an arm. Hood is too raw.

IMO, the Nats will have to go out of the org to find a CF to play next to Harper in RF.

that scenario involves hoping Burgess or Hood (or next year’s first round pick) plays in LF.

J-Max’s time is done. I was in his corner, but he’s past the point of being able to prove he can’t make contact at the major league level. the team simply didn’t give him the opportunity last year they gave Bernie this year.

Now there you may be onto something.

They were married to Milledge in CF for too long and they were trying to win games with Harris. Hard for me to remember who else got into the CF mix last year. Maxwell certainly could have been worth a shot last year. Now I think 25% of the problem is in his mind. So yet again, we hold onto him a year too long but you can’t blame them for that.

Expecting much out of Hood before 2013 seems aggressive. He’s raw in the field, can’t steal bases, and hasn’t shown much pop. He’s showing more contact so he’s earned the right to see if he can continue to improve in the field. I think Ramirez has as good a shot to play LF as Hood right now. His bat is ahead of Hood’s but his defense is probably way behind.

For me, the deal is who is this mysterious CF we’d have by 2012 who is a reasonably priced free agent? I think CF is one of the positions that they are almost going to except some weakness at if they spend for Dunn and they spend for somebody to replace Hammer.

FWIW, one of Burgess’ best tools is his arm and I think he needs to get a shot to play some in RF if he gets to the bigs if for nothing else than to increase his value for other organizations if he want to move him.

by souldrummer on Aug 20, 2010 4:49 PM EDT up reply actions

i just can't see Ramirez in the field at the major league level

yeah, a season’s worth of Maxwell as the RH platoon in CF last season when they were losing 100 games probably would have served everyone better than what transpired. but Morgan had to go and fool everybody for 250 at bats.

i think for the next two years, if they found a right-handed hitter to platoon with Morgan (or Bernie), CF would be serviceable then you talk about upgrading when Harper comes up.

I haven't seen Ramirez play yet.

His defense is certainly bad from everything that I’ve heard about, and I can’t disagree with you much here. I hope Ramirez gets to play LF every day in Potomac so I can actually see in person what he can and cannot do. I’m not really plugged into anyone who is blogging for Hagerstown about what’s going on from a scouting perspective.

That beat guy is writing for them regularly.

I’d almost pool some money for all the minors sites and get everybody to link to him if he’d be responsive to what people want to know and try to pass along some scouting info for the fans at home. I think guys like Morrow in Harrisburg and Parasiliti in Hagerstown don’t realize that there’s a potential audience of hardcore minors guys who are hanging on a lot of their words.

GBI note

Also bear in mind that sometimes “interesting” can be quite sarcastic. Case in point: Potomac signing a guy idle for three weeks since his release instead of combing the indys for a kid with something to prove.

You're the big Potomac Fan.

I defer to you on the dark depths of the Potomac Roster. I guess the flip side of that is what’s the damage in promoting whoever you think is best from the Hagerstown roster for 3 weeks to try to give them a cup of coffee in Potomac. Put Ramirez on the Potomac roster and let him play left and DH during the stretch run. I do realize that Ramirez isn’t strong defensively in left, though.

Isn’t the guy local? The only reason it would make sense to me is maybe he’s cheap and local and just going to sit on the bench anyways.

Players like him that can always put up the numbers in AAA, but just can’t do it in the majors frustrate me.

Bergmann's gonna need a shrewd agent.

He hasn’t been bad for Syracuse. If he can find an agent who can read the tea leaves well enough, he might find an organization that’s shallow enough to help him get another cup of coffee.

He’s been passed by Balester to me, though. Balester will get a lot more rope based on stuff alone. Now that he’s been passed by Balester it’s time to say “happy trails” to Mr. Bergmann. My question is why he accepted the DFA in the first place. Once he got booted from the 40-man it was going to be near impossible to get back on and there were several other veterans in front of him.

That was in one of the early editions of the links.

I probably should have added that to the summary before the jump. It was in the gamer for Syracuse as well, which is probably the best of the links if you want to inform yourself before you get into the Mock debate.

Grizzy and RobBobs...

…were debating Mock in the last minors thread. I jumped in to weigh in with my thoughts as well. The article’s a good one. Not sure where his stuff his. 0K/4BB in a Harrisburg start is not a good sign. Supposedly, freeswingers from Erie were making contact early and that might have limited his strikeouts.
