Elias Rankings Update
The updated Elias Rankings are out (care of MLBTradeRumors). Adam Dunn is probably one of the most exciting to watch on the list - as he currently projects as a Type A free agent. He's hanging in there on the 76.5 percentile. Of also of interest is Adam Kennedy...on 56 percentile...if he could just nudge up to over 58, we'd get a type B for him (although noting he likely isnt a free agent this offseason).

I don't think this matters for Kennedy but someone else knows better than me.
We already have agreed on a salary with Kennedy for next year. We gave him a two year contract with the option to buy him about for 500K if I remember correctly. Would certainly save us some hassle if he could remain a stopgap next year until Espinosa is ready, hopefully second half of next year or 2012.

You’re right – it was a 2 year deal with a $500k buyout. I wasnt seriously thinking he would be a free agent – but if he became a Type B player – then I think it might alter the thinking of whether they decide to use the $500k payout. It’s a difference of dropping $500k and getting no return versus a draft pick (Im assuming that we’d get the draft pick if we used the payout? Im not certain on that either).
In any event, its somewhat moot – we dont have a 2B for next year and it looks increasingly like Kennedy will be the backup to a PTBNL.
Ian Desmond is my hero!
Just because they are a Type A or Type B doesn't mean we get picks though, remember
Because we have to offer arbitration first, and a player might accept when we don’t want that.
Sunshine will come to Nats Park, I promise. (visit por favor? my website)
Dunn's probably not going to accept.
And the Nats would probably have no problem with him at 1 year 15-18Mil I suppose. Just another year through the trade deadline rodeo with Dunn.

Dunn's not going to accept arbitration
He’s either going to sign an extension that’s (probably) about what he’s been rumored to be looking for since Rizzo’s leverage is all gone now OR he’s going to test the free agent market. Particularly considering that he’s having a career year, Dunn’s value will never be higher on the market than it is right now, and it’s a mortal lock that some team is going to give him not only the money that he wants, but the years as well. He wants long-term security, and can you blame the guy? He’s 30, this is his time to cash in.
I’m pretty sure Kennedy’s FA status is a moot point. If the Nationals buy out the second (final) year of his contract, I don’t believe they have the option of offering him arbitration at that point. Really, the buyout makes picking up his option an even easier decision. In reality, it means you’re either paying him $2 million to play or $500,000 not to play. The Nats won’t find a better option out there for the $1.5 million difference.
The 2b market is a bit weak this year (Orlando Hudson and Felipe Lopez seem like the runaway top 2). They could take another run at the O-Dog. I would think that would depend on how Rizzo feels about Espinosa’s progress, though. If he feels Espinosa has the goods to be a big league regular by 2012, why bother paying much bigger bucks (and probably years) if you have a cheap, solid stopgap and feel you have a good young guy ready to take over the role soon?
We’re going to be watching AK20 in Washington again next season… I still say they don’t bother to bring anyone in and platoon him with The General.

+1
It’s not really what you want to hear as a fan. Basically, it’s a we’re settling for okay in the near term because we’re not ready to contend and we don’t want to throw money at this position. Kennedy does help us to believe that we can make real moves to upgrade elsewhere on the diamond. We could really use a credible left handed pinch hitter and some kind of outfield upgrade. Additionally, the money saved on Kennedy can be applied to longer term pitching solutions that get us closer to contention when the kids come up here.

I think AK might stay
Just out of the fact that I dont see Rizzo giving up draft picks for any of the guys still on there.
Ian Desmond is my hero!
Yep you sign him back next year for a role similar to this year.
Part-time player if Espinosa starts and respectable but not but so good starter if he doesn’t. Save your powder for 2012 or a run at a truly impactful free agent like Crawford.
