MASNSports.com's Ben Goessling: Nationals Move SS Danny Espinosa To Triple-A Syracuse.
I'm willing to admit when I'm wrong, and I didn't think, since I hadn't read or heard anyone say it, that Nats' shortstop prospect Danny Espinosa was on the fast track to the nation's capital, but after reading MASNSports.com's Ben Goessling's article entitled, "Nats move Espinosa to Triple-A Syracuse", wherein Mr. Goessling writes that the 23-year-old '08 3rd Round pick, "...could get a September call-up with a strong month at Syracuse, though it's also possible the Nationals will have him finish the season there and wait to bring him to the majors," I'm beginning to think I was wrong...sorry Espo-backers...

No. It's what got Bowden his job, not what he applied.

I'm not a scout...
…so I’m not fully qualified to agree or disagree on a lot of these moves. It will be interesting to see what the corresponding move is. Do they send Michael Martinez back down to Harrisburg? [my guess] or move Lombardozzi up? (parallel aggressive move)
For those in the Espo lobby, this has got to be good news because if he rakes in Syracuse down the stretch and helps them get to the playoffs, he could certainly be in the DC mix sooner rather than later. I don’t like to read too much into the DC consequences of these moves as I hope that prospect development isn’t affected too much by major league situations unless you are contending. Certainly this reduces the chances that they invest a lot of cash or trade commodities in 2B or SS upgrades next year. Hopefully Kennedy can continue to play well enough to justify retaining his option. Half the value of the Guzman trade was to free up Kennedy and some others.
Just curious, are people interested in me putting up some following the minors stuff? I would probably go narrative style in contrast to “Across the Affiliates” at Natsfarm.com and the standard boxscore summaries at nationalsprospects.com. The other thing that I would add to those sites is probably putting up some info on publicly available nonsubscriber info on our prospects. I’m not a Baseball America or Baseball Prospectus subscriber at this point, so I wouldn’t really be linking or commenting on that stuff.

Sunshine will come to Nats Park, I promise. (visit por favor? my website)
As you've probably guessed from RobBobs comments...
…I’d like to see Lombardozzi kept at Potomac. Potomac’s currently in first place in the Carolina League (I realize many of you don’t care about minor league vics), and I remain in the take it slow camp. Lombardozzi has certainly done a bunch to vault from scout’s don’t like his tools to probably finding his way onto our top 20 lists next year as a C+ player. I’d still like to see him finish this year strong and start at Harrisburg next year. Send Martinez back to Harrisburg and now let’s focus on Marrero and some of the pitchers. Incidentally, the two guys from the Guzman trade are both scheduled to start at Harrisburg in the next three days. 3/5 of the Harrisburg rotation is players we’ve gotten from these late season deadline deals. Thompson, who we got for Nick Johnson, is the third although he’s been a mess all year.

It's definitely a delicate subject
And interesting psychology— sometimes that late call-up means the world to players though, so hoo knows. I’m fine either way.

I have been discounting the idea of a September call up because I know Rizzo likes to take it slow, this changes all of that.

They have a better system then we do and their fans have a history of seeing great players come up through the system so there’s far more interest in the minors over there. If there’s significant interest here, I’d consider putting more of my minors observations here. So far you’re the only person who has expressed interest in it. Natsfarm.com and nationalsprospects.com already cover the minors box scores and transactions.

A good move
Espinosa was raking at AA with nothing left to prove. I said the other night I thought he would be a leading candidate to get a September callup, and now he has about to month to earn it.
Syracuse is certainly worth watching now, what with Zimmermann, Ramos, and Espinosa.
I Like it
Espinosa has earned it, and now in my mind is a september call up, along with Marrero. Lombardozzi and Burges are most likley the next to move up at A ball, with norris needing one more year there. Good luck Espinosa
Diagree with this.
Conservative as I can be, I think that Norris should start next year at AA. Supposedly he’s made some progress defensively, he’s maintained his high walk rate, and the drop in power and contact seems to be partially due to some lack of power or bat speed due to the hamate bone injury. We’re sending him to the Arizona Fall League and that will affect our assessment of him for next year, but I say you send him to the Eastern League with the hope that he graduates from there for 2012 to go to AAA Syracuse and the Washington mix if Ramos stumbles.
I’m conservative on a lot of guys, but Norris is not one of them. That OBP is wonderful, and I think his bat could play at AA today.
On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park. In Rizzo and Ramos we trust.
agreed
Norris seems to be the kind of prospect who has to be pushed along. His walk rate is really promising…I think the power will come as he progresses through the system and gets a little more aggressive at the plate. I’m really looking forward to watching him in the AFL, but I think he has to get out of A ball by the beginning of next year.

Much Royals love over at minorleagueball.com today. Sunshine and roses about their 2013 potential pieces and especially their AA rotation. Crow didn’t even make the list of their 5 best pitching options for 2013. Now that is some scary stuff. He’s not having a great year, but he’s probably certainly be on our list if we’d drafted him when he came out or even if we’d redrafted him this year. Still not upset that we’ve got Storen, of course.

I was doing some reading about the Royals this morning as well

if norris can hit good in the Arizona Fall league, he should get the call, but if not, no reason to rush him as hes still young, and you dont want to kill his confidence. but im no scout.and i could easily change my mind if he hits good in the fall league, and the rest of the year.
Call to where? To the bigs? That’s a major jump from A ball to the bigs. I think he should start next year at AA regardless. AFL is kind of a reward for his work, cementing his status as a top prospect in the org, and giving him extra at bats due to time missed due to injury.
On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park. In Rizzo and Ramos we trust.
no, not the bigs, AA bad wording on my part. but i am very conservative when it come to our prospects. do you have any idea if marrero can play RF?
No.
He’s already failed in left and he’s slow as molasses. If he was even a plus defender at first, he’d be a better prospect.
On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park. In Rizzo and Ramos we trust.
Like they say, these things have a way of working themselves out.
Marrero needs a year at AAA. Dunn’s still got to be signed. Marrero could be a valuable trade piece if Dunn ends up blocking him. There’s a lot that has to happen for that to occur, though.
On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park. In Rizzo and Ramos we trust.
Espinosa's getting moved up because Kevin Mench is coming to DC.
though my preference would have been to let him continue to destroy AA pitching like he has. i don’t think this promotion is “rushing” him, but he’s a guy that is going to make the bigs with his glove and any ounce of confidence gained with his bat will be important for his development.
regardless, good for him. he has been on a tear and it’s good to see performance rewarded.

Was Mench that critical to Syracuse, though?
Don’t we have organizational guys elsewhere in the system whose development is less critical to the org? Just like they reached down to get Whiting and Leatherman for other jobs at Syracuse that were viewed as fill-in kind of things, Mench’s promotion shouldn’t really be the reason you promote Espinosa. He’s probably going to be sent back down after Morgan’s DL trip is up. Either you believe Espinosa’s turned a corner with his hot streak and deserves to go their to stay or you think he’s not ready yet and you keep him down here. I think that the Mench promotion is kind of a convenient opportunity to promote him up there for the rest of the year myself.
On the other hand, I’m with you and was leaning towards wanting him to continue to rake in AA.
On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park. In Rizzo and Ramos we trust.
What benefit does HE, as a player, gain from playing against competition that's beneath him?
If they believe he’s capable to play at a higher level in August, then they should bring him up in August. It doesn’t help him a bit in his development if he comes to the park thinking that the game is easy.
Rob
"Ninety feet between home plate and first base may be the closest man has ever come to perfection." -- Red Smith
There's an element of agree to disagree here.
I don’t believe that the competition is beneath him. There are concerns about his strike zone discipline. His OBP has dropped this year from .375OBP to .334 OBP this year. That suggests it may drop further into a Desmond like .300-.320 OBP at the next level. I don’t want him thinking he can slug his way to the bigs with poor strike zone discipline, which is what he seems to be doing at this point. Some folks here believe that his hot streak and his 3HR game indicate he’s turned a corner and is worthy of Syracuse. Rizzo may or not believe this; we’ll see how long he stays there. As Dave mentioned, this move was the corresponding move to the Mench promotion. This could just be a cup of coffee at Syracuse until Mench comes down. Or it could be an opportunity to see just how hot he is by giving him a full month to 6 weeks up there and maybe even a September call up.
Take away his big night and look at his last 9 games and he’s got a .341 SLG and a .298 OBP (did that by hand feel free to check my math). That doesn’t feel like someone who has completely mastered the league. He had a very solid July. I’d like to see him match that up with a very solid full month of August so that I can be confident that this isn’t just a period hot streak but a real mastery of the level.
I don’t think there’s major damage being inflicted. Some guys can get aggressively promoted and be persistent through their struggles and be steady even if they slump when promoted. Some guys need the boost to their confidence of fully mastering a level so that they have no doubt that there promotion is warranted. You tend to like the aggressive approach from what I’ve read. I like the conservative approach. Rizzo seems to be on the more conservative side of the fence in most cases from what I’ve observed about his promotion stuff.
Burgess was a good example of this. He spent all of last year at Potomac. He started out hot with a different approach this year and people wanted to see him promoted to Harrisburg. I went through the league a second time and pitchers adjusted to him and he’s remained at Potomac. I’d argue that had we promoted him around midseason or quarter season (and there was certainly room in Harrisburg’s outfield) he might have major struggles and screwed up his swing. As is, he should have this whole year to work on mastering Potomac and based on his age, I feel that he should be given a shot at Harrisburg next year. No sense in having him spend more than 2 years in Potomac.
About the only guy I’m aggressive with is Norris because I believe his strike zone discipline translates well at a lot of levels. I’m not a scout, though, and Rizzo and his people can dig beyond the statistics and into the makeup and process to figure out what’s the best move of course.
On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park. In Rizzo and Ramos we trust.

Regardless of whether he makes it to DC in Sept. or not, Espinosa, more than any other Nats farmhand, looks like he might be a good one.

I just feel like Mench is such a boring, no-reward call-up. Thoughts?
Legit prospects or and guys you care about need some starts and some at bats.
Mench is just going to sit around for the most part I hope. I do understand the building sentiment for Boomer and he’s gone from afterthought to fleeting hope so far this year.
Boomer is having an out of body experience at Syracuse so far. I’m listening to the game. Boomer should have engineered in the first. Serves a single to leadoff. Michael Martinez flies out. Whiting steals, throw gets away and Whiting’s sitting on 3rd with one out before Lambin weakly flies out to right without scoring the runner.

That’s certainly what he hopes. He’d be pleased as punch to be a 4th outfielder in the bigs. I have a hard time believing that he’s got enough of an arm to play on the corners, though. Weak arm and lack of physical tools plays better at 2nd than CF to me. Again, hope I’m wrong and Boomer continues to shock the world. These things have a way of working themselves out. Desmond has defensive and OBP questions to work out. Espinosa has to show he can hit better at AAA, Especially by getting on base, than he has tonight so far (0-3, K) so far over at least a half season. Then you see whether Desmond’s worked out his defensive stuff. If he has, you might keep him there. But most scouts say Espinosa’s got a better glove at short than Desmond has and you might move him 2B to get rid of some of the throwing areas of aggression that we’ve seen.
