Way to go Kevin Mench
Back in the big leagues after a short hiatis in Japan. At least in 80 games at Syracuse this year you have more walks than strikeouts. Say hello to John McLaren for me.
Why not us? Why not now?
Its good to see Mench here
Hopefully he does well and doesn’t turn out like Blaylock or anything

God I hate the Dodgers
My boss is a Dodger fan. This team is so boring, even down to their uniforms
Vin Scully is God though. Will be nice to hear him for a few games as he tells us about childhood through college and about every extended family member of the Nats, and whatever the hell else he feels like talking about. Love that guy

Good evening, DC Faithful...

Lannan, you're playing the Dodgers B-team.
No Martin, no Furcal, no Manny. Failure to deliver a quality start would reflect poorly on your case to remain on the big league roster the rest of the way.

Promise I won't bring this up on a consistent basis
But it seems that Daniel Hudson has taken to the National League for the Diamondbacks. After going 8 strong (3 H, 1 BB, 1 Run) in his first outing with Arizona against the Mets, he looked equally as good against the Padres tonight, going 7.2 innings while allowing just 1 run on…. well… 3 hits.
Then again, Donkey’s got 2 bombs for the night.

There's a lot of baseball left to be played...
…and a lot of negotiating left to be done. We’ll see how it plays out. I wish no ill for Dan Hudson (unlike Aaron Crow). It’s up to Rizzo to sign Dunn. But it’s hard for me to believe that we’ll find two picks who are going to have more value between now and 2014 than Hudson if Dunn walks.

Why I promised not to do it consistently. I will admit I’ll be watching his career fairly closely though. I obviously tend to disagree with quite a few of you on how valuable he’ll be.
Still depends what else would have come back with him (if anything), but I do feel that he’s good enough so that there’s a good shot Rizzo regrets not pulling the trigger to acquire him.

Though the buzz is that his stuff doesn't necessarily belie it
108:31 in AAA this year in 93+ innings. Don’t think he’s ever a strikeout an inning guy in the majors, but figure he settles in over 7. By all accounts, command and control are among his strong points. Wanna watch one of his starts, but with the Nats on the west coast right now, I’m watching the Nats while he’s pitching.

Well, he gets a lot of slack for other good deeds,
but you’ve got to make the defense make the play at first with a runner coming around third.

Dunn had been lagging on his walk totals this year
I have a feeling he’ll be walking a lot more in the next few weeks.
Rob
"Ninety feet between home plate and first base may be the closest man has ever come to perfection." -- Red Smith
The question is
How many times was there a runner in scoring position with first base open in those games? I used to argue that in the right situation I would intentionally walk Bonds with the bases loaded in a close/late game where I had a multiple run lead. I could make a similar argument with Pujols.
by bluelineswinger on Aug 7, 2010 12:58 AM EDT up reply actions
I once heard that said of Cuban pitchers...
…they’d rather walk in a run against a good hitter than give up a multi-run run. I can’t remember who told me this or what the context was, but for some reason I recall it was specifically Cubans.

Interesting
Actually swear I remember it happening once in an MLB game with Bonds, and I backed the decision.
I think it was the ninth inning, bases loaded, 2 outs, and the Giants were down three. Bonds got intentionally passed. Next guy made an out and the game was over.

As much as I disliked Bonds, I always hoped they would walk him
rather than give him an opportunity to launch a roid -fueled bomb.

In said game
The Diamondbacks had an 8-6 lead with two out in the ninth. Bases were loaded. They walked Bonds intentionally to cut the lead to 8-7. The next batter, Brent Mayne, lined out to right to end the game.
The researchers said the bases loaded intentional walk happened three times (recorded, at least) in the 1900s….. Nap Lajoie and Bill Nicholson were the other two
