Does seem that everyone is irked that we didn't meet their expectations...
But if it pays off in MOAR wins and MOAR fans, it is probably worth it.

But is sensible. With Livo + 10:10 start, you need the energy.

Good.
I’m kind of rooting for the Marlins in that game. My goals are ABP, ABL (Anyone but LaRussa) and rooting against the evil empires in the AL East as well as the ChiSox while rooting for Minnesota.

Got to say I’m glad you guys survived the Cubbies today. I realize that there are Cubs fans here, but until they show some sign of taking down LaRussa we’ll have to go with the Redlegs.

What's Ray Knight saying?
On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park. In Rizzo and Ramos we trust.
No he was saying Adrian Gonzalez
Because the Padres have no other offense. I just can’t see voting for a first baseman for MVP when his numbers barely compare to several other guys at the same position.
Aim for the head baby Jesus
Park context?
Gonzalez plays in one of the least hitter friendly parks in the NL. Votto plays in one of the most. Don’t know about pros and cons of their defense, but if the Padres end up with the best record of the NL you’d have to consider them. Even Reds fans would probably admit that Rolen might have been their first half MVP.

You can check neutralized stats like OPS+ or wRC+ to compare.

Which are important, but also really hard to get (which is a definitely a positive point for the Terps). But concurrently, you have to weight for long spells of dominance and the state of other programs during that championship spell.

What do you mean?
“Don’t swing at first pitch” is what Desi should be thinking when he comes to the plate? If he does that, then he might as well not swing at all.
I think he might be better suited to tell himself “only swing at a (fastball) (low and away)”, with the pitch type and location to suit his needs.

And here we have another agree to disagree area.
At some point, you need a fair amount of batters take pitches and get high OBPs if you want to field a winning team. While it is no batter’s individual responsibility to take pitches and work walks, if the lineup does not field enough guys who either get on base frequently or run up high pitch counts, you’ll have the privilege of facing Cole Hamels for 8IP even when you manage to score four runs and won’t see the soft underbellly that is major league middle relief (Miguel Batista notwithstanding). Now on individual pitches what you’re saying makes a whole bunch of sense. But perhaps Desmond does need to change something since OBP is rather low?
On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park. In Rizzo and Ramos we trust.

RobBobs right...
….in that some guys don’t have but so much pitch recognition and they need to swing while the swingins good. My problem is that at some point you need guys that will get on base besides Zim, Dunn, and Hammer. Pudge’s a low OBP guy. Morgan’s a low OBP guy. Guz was a low OBP guy. Desmond’s a low OBP guy. We need more guys who will be ducks on the pond for the boppers.
On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park. In Rizzo and Ramos we trust.
Well then that's a philosophy

I agree with that.
I think that Epstein’s good at knowing guys swings and empowering them to make contact with the ball. Outside of the guys with polished approaches like Hammer, Zim, and Dunn, though, I’m not sure if he really encourages guys to try to get walks. Some of these guys need to get more walks.
On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park. In Rizzo and Ramos we trust.
Getting more walks is obviously easier said than dunn though
If the guys improve as hitters, the patience and the eye will ensue. That’s my thoughts on it.
I mean, you can tell a guy to take pitches and each guy will see an average of 5 pitches or so, but what good does that do if the result isn’t productive?

Compare Dunn and Reynolds. You have two hitters that have power, are pretty big, strikeout a lot. But Dunn strikes out out of patience, and Reynolds strikes out out of impatience.

As I said,
I don’t want him to swing at pitches he can’t handle. In ANY count. Simply taking pitches for the sake of taking pitches isn’t going to help though.
For years, people have complained that Dunn “takes too many pitches”. Not true. He’s just properly selective. If he doesn’t think he can handle a pitch then he doesn’t swing at it. THIS is what Desmond needs to do.

On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park. In Rizzo and Ramos we trust.
Discipline is finding the right pitch to hit.
Whether that’s the first pitch or the 20th, it doesn’t matter. Swing at the right ones, and often later pitch sequences give more-hittable pitches.

I think this is "almost" correct
I think that pitchers know that a certain percentage of their pitches will be mistakes. The more pitches a player sees, the more likely he’ll get a chance to hit a mistake. I don’t think that mistakes are more likely to occur later in counts though.
So, if Desmond learns the patience to wait for a pitch, he’ll get better. The only problem is that, as SD says, his plate vision isn’t particularly good and this makes him a likely strikeout victim once he get behind in the count. Thus, he loses his patience as well. Not a good combination I know.
Rob

An official Willie!
Rob
"Ninety feet between home plate and first base may be the closest man has ever come to perfection." -- Red Smith
Here's a question.
Let’s say Bernadina gets thrown out trying to steal. Bernadina gets double switched out. Willie Harris comes back in to bat next inning. Is that still a Willie Harris pinch hit at bat if he comes into play defense before he takes an official at bat?
On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park. In Rizzo and Ramos we trust.
Technically
As he walked, he didn’t get an official AB. Hate to nitpick. He got an official plate appearance.
by bluelineswinger on Aug 8, 2010 1:05 AM EDT up reply actions
Yeah,
you are considered to be a pinch hitter first, even if you don’t complete the at bat. Same way if they had switched to a lefty when Willie was announced and Riggleman went with another hitter. Willie still appears as a pinch hitter.

DAMMIT PUNK.
Time to join Jorgath for some sleep – he’s been conked out since the middle of the 6th.

I'm angry at the mostly meatless part of the order.
Big RISP FAIL tonight….
and that bad defense early on that allowed them to tie the game.
Not good.

Really the defense wasn't that bad.
Didn’t Morse rob a grandslam on that same play? We need more hitting from the lineup on a night like tonight. There’s a lot of pressure on Dunn and Zim to be superstars every night if Hammer’s not going to hit.

It's hard for us. Little room for error defensively when we don't score that many runs and we don't have dominanting pitching.
The Kennedy error was huge in this game. Still, you don’t expect Morse to save the grandslam. Weird game, exciting game.

I mean, Livan pitched a quality start
We can’t ask for much more, defense good and/or bad

Peralta was excellent as well.
I really have no idea where this run of success has come from for him.

Oops...forgot about him...he was good.

Slaten did fine, as well, for his .2
He seems to be coming into his own, though he is oft-forgotten in his little role.
