Maxwell, Nieves...
what, no Harris?
I mean, if the Nats insist on
- Having Marquis pitch, and
- Having the bench players get starts regardless of the results
then they might as well go all in.

Marquis can call his own game if necessary...
so why not have Nieves catch?

I feel bad for him.
I hope it’s just a precautionary thing and to make room on the roster for Marquis and Stras on Tuesday.

I'm disappointed about Det going back on the DL...
…but I’m even MORE disappointed about leaving Lannan in the rotation and putting Stammen in the pen. Yes, I know Stammen is a more adaptable pitcher. Yes, I know we would benefit from having more than one lefty in the rotation at a time. But, let’s face it, Stammen is coming into his own and is a more dependable starter than Lannan is. There is some logic here, but I don’t think it’s enough to justify this move at this time.
Or maybe I’m just cranky that we haven’t had consistency in our rotation for, like, a month now.

By the way, the Nationals want to TRY to score early and often...
Ted Lilly is a flyball pitcher and regularly gives up one run homers. But if the Dodgers actually give him some run support, he could be dangerous.
(Sorry Ted, since you are not a Cub or a National, I am forced to root against you today)

I was being sarcastic.
This is probably Bernie’s scheduled day off and Riggleman is a stickler for days off. Sometimes switches have to do with who the opposing starting pitcher will be for a particular game, but Max’s batting average is so pitiful that it would be a moot switch.

I've said for a while...
They finally gave Bernie a chance on a regular basis and he’s excelled, why not give him the same shot against LHP and let him learn how to hit them instead of sitting him in 2 of 3 games….

I'll argue with that.
We seem to have a lot of guys going on the DL after poor starts. Could it possibly be because they’re afraid to report injuries for some reason? I really don’t think that many guys could just “make up” problems because they’re not performing well without setting off an alarm.

…there’s isn’t a good equivalent counting stat (that I know of). You can quibble about the precise definition of QS, but it’s as good as anything else.

Those aren't "Crap stats"
They are good stats because they are closely correlated with runs scored, and, importantly, they are easily interpreted. There are more complicated stats that give improvement in the explanatory power, but that are fairly mysterious and therefore lose their effect. I like the fancy stats, but ERA and OPS are also useful.
Rob
"Ninety feet between home plate and first base may be the closest man has ever come to perfection." -- Red Smith
They aren't terrible stats, but the scale for those two aren't very good
OPS double counts results, and ERA doesn’t do a god job in discerning who is mediocre and who isn’t. Both stats will show you who shines, but the stats are most often needed to discern who can be productive in the player pool of mediocrity.
I’m not a stats guy, but I’ve come to appreciate them because they provide some variant perception and are especially helpful in analyzing college baseball, where stats are skewed even more
