USA Today - Paul White: Nationals honor Andre Dawson, a Washington baseball icon?
"The ceremony appears to be some sort of gift and a first-pitch ceremony (thrown to another franchise Hall of Famer who never played for Washington, Gary Carter), as well as the unveiling of a ring of honor for other Hall of Famers with ties to Washington."
Who's going to see Strasburg, Dawson and Carter tomorrow? Nats noted today that tickets are still available...and what's a ring of honor...
Comments
I'd say I'm 50/50 tomorrow.
I’d like to go both Tuesday and Thursday, though, and I’m working on it behind the scenes. Are you heading down for the event, Patrick?

More on that later…

Ring of honor is probably just some sort of monument on the concourse ad boards, where the ads and stats are usually displayed.

questions
can the federal baseball cognoscente suggest questions for the ring of honor inductees
Can I ask what perspective you're approaching this from?
Are you reporting for someone or are you just curious? What venue would you be coming from?

The real solid article on this one is Shienin's article.
I guess this was for the Sunday paper, it was time-stamped Saturday at 8:00PM.
Phil Wood is presenting the award to Andre Dawson? That’s really bad news for the pro-Expos folks that are part of this whole thing.

My multitasking isn't working as well tonight.
Here’s the article on the Dawson ceremony from WaPo. Probably was linked elsewhere on FB, but it’s apprpriate for this thread as well.

Many thanks to souldrummer for posting the link to the Shenin article.
As a complete outsider I feel for both fanbases, the Senators’ crowd and especially the Expos fans. This really is a complicated history, but the bottom line is the Nationals were once the Expos. I think the Lerners and MLB would do well to embrace the fact that they are now a team based in DC but also should take steps to acknowledge their Expos’ past.
It was bad enough that the Expos were yanked out of Montreal and picked apart and MLB does not have to compound it by acting like they never existed.
I don’t see why the Nats can’t balance both legacies. To me, it doesn’t seem like you have to ignore the Expos in order to get the allegiances of the DC area fans.
Patiently waiting for "next year" since 1971.

That's why Wood's side of the story seems very irresponsible to me.
I like Phil Wood for so many other reasons. He’s genuinely knowledgable. He’s quirky. He loves baseball so very much. But here he just seems to be very small minded. It does not hurt the Nationals to acknowledge that there was an Expos team and Expos players that helped contribute to our team. The Expos deserve to be remembered somewhere. If the people of Montreal and the former players would like to consider us that steward for now, so be it. If MTL is offended that we have their team, then back off of it. If they do something with Hall of Famers related to DC and start reaching out to Orioles fans, I will be sick, though. Cal has absolutely nothing to do with the Nationals and when they try to go with the Orioles in the AL/Nats in the NL Kum-bah-yah stuff that bugs me.
Livo should be the guy presenting to Dawson, not Phil Wood. Livo was awesome for the Expos.

I agree with you, souldrummer...
Livo should be the one presenting to Andre Dawson, not Phil Wood. It would make sense, Livo is a bridge between the two franchises.
How is it that Phil Wood was chosen to present to Dawson? And as an historian you would think he could appreciate the fact that the Nationals have ties to the Expos. I understand the Nationals wanting to adopt DC’s baseball history. However, I think for the sake of history and as a gracious gesture not always adopted by other teams who change cities, it’s nice to occasionally pause and acknowledge the franchise’s previous incarnation.

Agree as well....
Wood is good for adding color and history to a a broadcast booth but his oddities and as you noted his opinion on honoring the Montreal past seem out of place in presenting a Hall of Famer an award in front of a packed house…..
