Game 134: Madness?! THIS! IS! NAAAATSTOWWWWWNNN!!
- One run not enough tonight: Mike Morse (+9.4%) hits an RBI single for the early lead (+8.5%).
- When does Maya get here? Scott Olsen (-53.8%) loses control on the game quickly, giving up 9 ER in 1.2 IP with 2 BBs and 1K.
- Not helping: Craig Stammen (-7.3%) finishes nailing the coffin shut with another 6 ER in 3.1 innings of relief.
- Punches do not count in WPA totals: Nyjer Morgan (-3.8%) is 0-1 with a HBP, 2 SB, and a run scored. He also got ejected for some reason.
- Promising: Ian Desmond (+9.2%) is 3-4 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored.

I sure am glad these days that Desmond is on my fantasy team

Desmond is raking lately.
I like that kid. I am cautiously hopeful about him for 2011.

Cautiously hopeful?
How about Zimmerman? You convinced he’s gonna be good yet?

Eh. Give him another year and maybe I'll be convinced.

Just saw a slow replay...Morgan's punch missed Volstad, and Gabby got him good
If you are going to go crazy, at least do it right and hit the guy. Missing is pathetic…only grazed Volstad in the shoulder instead of his face.
What's more frustrating than being a Marlins and Orioles fan? Eye surgery???
Volstad was cut when another Nationals player jumped on him. Watch a slow replay and you'll see it

you're saying that Pat Listach cut Volstad, I don't think so
he was clearly trying to just hold him down
Bottom line, Morgan looked like a fool.....
Got trashed by Gabby, and unbuttoning his shirt and yelling obscenities at the crowd will earn him an extra suspension. He is awaiting an appeal, right? This will not look good for him.

I would be shocked if his appeal on the philly incident is denied
however, he’s going to get a hefty suspension from the brawl but probably an even larger one from his antics coming off the field
Gabby also blindsided him.
Volstad saw Nyjer coming.

Sanchez was a pretty dangerous cheap shot...

When I played Rugby we often had to take retaliation for our other teamates actions. Last 2 other Nationals got hit in addition to Nyjer plus they were blowing us out. Ok that is cool, but when you throw another heater at Nyjer, even though I am not loving Morgan lately the Nationals have to stand up for themselves. We may look like fools to those who never have been in a heated athletic argumnet, but Nyjer was well within his means to go after Volstad. Now was it smart, ??? , did Nyjer get his butt kicked, YES, but it was a statement that enough is enough. It is proabably hard to be Nyjer’s teammate or manager but he needed their support for that one moment….I am proud of Doug Slaten !

MASN just showed the results of Olsen's last 2 starts vs the Marlins
Each start: 1.2 IP. Total 16 ER.
Yikes!!

Yeah, have that in the post game too, hasn't gotten out of the second...
Marlins own Olsen…

What a crazy game...
Just watched the highlights.
1) Nyjer better pack his bags. He’s either getting suspended for a while or he’ll be run out of town. I loved how he got his “revenge” after the first beaning – two SBs. Why couldn’t he just do it again? Such is life.
2) Scott Olsen ain’t cutting it. I don’t know what’s up with him. Heard on Twitter that he might be put on the DL, and that Bally might take his place in the rotation. MOAR BALLYSTACHE!!!
3) Desi had a great night. I can’t wait to see him and Espinosa (I’m calling him Spinner) play together more next year.
4) Speaking of Spinner, GUY CAN RUN. HOLY HELL.
5) Mike Stanton’s been slumping for a while, but I still think he’ll be a great player.
Just my 5 thoughts. Go Nats!
The sky is the same color wherever you go.
Spinner--I like it.

Why couldn’t he just do it again? My guess is because it hurts getting hit by a baseball. If a guy punches you once and you take it, are you going to stand there and let him swing at you again? I’d hope not.
Given the way some criticized him for the 2 SB, NM was in a "no-win" situation
On the first plunking, unless he takes his lumps and stands on first. Frank Robinson used to be famous for hitting HR’s after getting dusted or plunked, but he’s an intense competitor and Nyjer is out of bounds? Suffice it to say, I disagree with Ray Knight and Patrick on this one, stealing bases in the early part of a game is about competing. If they were still holding him on first, then they are playing to stop the steal attempt. So he steals anyway (I’m just surprised he wasn’t picked off). I dislike throwing at people in a baseball game, you can end a career that way. But Nyjer didn’t start a fight (with a guy about six inches taller and 50 lbs heavier than he is) until the guy came after him AGAIN.
Bottom line, no one’s hands are clean in this. If the Marlins just let it go after one plunking, we wouldn’t be having this conversation either.
THIS. Plunk #1 was deserved.
Plunks on Nieves and Gonzalez were not deserved if intentional. I’ll personally give Volstad the benefit of the doubt on whether they were, but the umpires shouldn’t have.
Plunk #2 (or throwing behind, which is a missed plunk) was NOT DESERVED. PERIOD.
Should Morgan have charged? Nope, he should have said very heated words at Volstad and walked “menacingly” towards him.

Scott Olsen's Game Score from ESPN a 2.
Game Score is
50 + 1*Outs + 2*IP after the 4th + 1*K – 2*H – 4*ER – 2*UnearnedRuns – 1*BB
JZ's last night was 76, I think.
Stras’ good starts were both 75 if I recall correctly.

Olsen is trying to outdo Jason Marquis' spring start
and see if he can get a triple digit ERA for the month. I don’t think any regular starting pitcher has ever had an ERA of 100.00. Could be a new record.
As for Nyjer Morgan, I think he needs to go. While I think he had to do something after that second pitch thrown at him, he started all this business by going after the Marlins catcher the other day. And doing that soon after he did that against the Cardinals. What if a key player got hurt in the brawl, like Zimmerman or Zimmermann? None of this would have happened if not for Morgan’s strange plays at the plate in recent weeks.
Morgan is not showing that he deserves a starting spot next season (or even this season). And his actions and the hostility that they are generating will put team members at risk of injury, from brawls or bean balls. I wouldn’t mind if the Nats cut both Olsen and Morgan this offseason. Bernadina can take over in CF. Zimmermann, Maya, Hernandez and Lannan form a decent rotation for next season. One of the other guys (Stammen, Wang, Atilano, Marquis) can fill in at the other spot. And then Strasburg will return the year after that. No need to keep Olsen around.

Pat Listach may get into trouble
He may have punched Volstad. Coaches are not supposed to act this way, regardless…

Horse Crap
His player was at the bottom of a pile with 2+ players trying to injure him. He went in there to protect his player. If there’s video of Listach throwing punches, fin, suspend him. All I saw with my eyes was him trying to hold Volstad back from getting free shots at Morgan.
No offense, fish fans, but to say that Njyer shouldn't be stealing bases
when his team is down, is pure BS and quite frankly makes you guys look like a bunch of [ahem] felines.
Sanchez’s clothesline was a cheap shot any way you look at it, and if I was Slaten I would have made it hurt when I hit him.
Patiently waiting for "next year" since 1971.
Agree ! The Fish announcers sounded just dumb during the brawl ....

I don't think anybody on TV
thought is was a good idea for Morgan to steal those bases. Ex-players, long-time announcers, writers, etc. They all seem to say that Nyjer’s actions, while not morally wrong, were liable to escalate the growing feud, not tamp it down. And escalating the feud didn’t help anybody — it certainly didn’t help the Nats.
Rob

I’m glad he stole the bases. They gave him a free pass…what’s he supposed to do? The Nats have scored a lot of runs lately. Should they have forfeited the game in the 4th inning? Quit trying to win?
Personally, I loved Riggleman’s comments after this game.
Morgan will likely get a long suspension, and Volstad will probably miss two starts…but it could energize the Nats. We’ll see if they can beat the Pirates on the road.
This all gets into the discussions of how valuable steals are
The Nats have scored runs because they are hitting the ball hard, not because of steals and sac flies. Yes, they do score runs because of steals and sac flies, but the only way to come back into a game in which you’re 11 runs down is to play long-ball , not small-ball. A steal might get you a run or two. Sure, that’s a run or two, and that never hurts, but it was extremely unlikely that the Nats would be close enough at the end of the game to look back and ask “what if” Nyjer had managed to steal a base in the fourth inning.
Rob
"Ninety feet between home plate and first base may be the closest man has ever come to perfection." -- Red Smith
Well, one thing I noticed was
Jordan Zimmermann, right on the edge of the pile. How smart would it be for Nyjer’s antics to end up with Zimmemann suffering another injury, right after he got done rehabbing from the other one? A baseball player’s instincts are to get in there and protect his teammate. That’s what all the Nats were doing. But this should never have happened.
