MASNSports.com's Ben Goessling: "Sources: Nationals unlikely to resign Adam Dunn."
Ben Goessling: "The Nationals are in the final week of the regular season, meaning they have just over a month to extend first baseman Adam Dunn's contract before the slugger can file for free agency. And according to sources familiar with the team's thinking, they're likely to let him walk."

Again, this kind of speculation stuff doesn't really move me too much.
At this point, we know he’s going to file for free agency and both sides are probably going to kick the tires on some other options. The team that we’ve been watching since Strasburg went down has an excellent bullpen, a below average offense without Willingham, and horrific starting pitching. I’m more interested in seeing how they market their current starters and try to obtain additional starters to address the greatest weakness on this team. We’re certainly a better team with Dunn and we can certainly afford re-signing him to a three year deal so I hope that happens. Better starting pitching, though, will be the true test of whether the front office means to compete. They don’t have Strasburg this year and you can’t count on Livo or Marquis past 2011. Pay for a reliable starter and give us a team that could turn into the 2010 Padres if all of the chips break right while expecting 75-81 wins.
As far as the Dunn news today goes, the MLBtraderumors article on Dunn was more helpful to me as I continue to learn more about how free agent compensation works. Right now, Dunn is a Type A but he is not the most noteworthy Type A out there so that could hurt the compensation that we get.

And improve the market for Dunn0r.
Although, it will be interesting to see how a historically deep 2011 draft class affects the value of supplemental and second round picks, especially with the looming CBA playing a role in the amount of leverage 2011 draftees have (sign NOW or potentially deal with hard-slotting).
Yankees exploited a flaw, big time, by signing 3 Type A FA in one offseason, and then not signing any the following offseason.
Needs moar dingerz and moar Josh Donaldson.
Blah blah blah
They’re not going to “let” him walk; but they aren’t willing to pay him enough not to file for free agency and see what kind of offers he gets from other teams (and what other players the Nats might take in his stead). It’s not like the Nationals are prohibited from negotiating with him from that point on. I’ve been under the assumption that Dunn would file for free agency for weeks now, but also under the assumption that he may well return.
How do you square this doom & gloom statement with the Nats using Dunn as part of their 2011 season ticket adds on MASN? Someone in the team management had to approve those ads. Ben’s article is just noise, not news.
exactly
And, it makes no sense, unless its a MASSIVE overpay, for Dunn to not test free agency. Maybe someone throws him a 5 year deal.
Especially with people looking at the 2010 Mariners and seeing why focusing entirely on pitching and defense isn’t the best idea…
Needs moar dingerz and moar Josh Donaldson.
This the money quote that gives me hope:
“I can tell you the only person in the front office who wants to resign him is the owner,” said one scout for an opposing team who covers the Nationals regularly.
Even if that’s the only vote in Dunn’s favor, it’s the only one he needs.

This might be interesting as much for what it says about their willingness to spend as much as anything else.
If the Lerners want him, something must be motivating them besides money. The whole “Lerners are cheap” lobby says that they don’t want to resign Dunn and are willing to go with kids and profit for next year.

Agree, but IF Rizzo doesn't have a vote of confidence around Dunn
I’m rather wary, since Rizzo is one of the better scouts in the business, and has shown that.
But then, so was Jack Zdurecnik (sp?), and the Mariners really, really can’t hit and don’t have much pitching beyond Felix and Pineda.
Needs moar dingerz and moar Josh Donaldson.
Ouch...Rizzo does love those draft picks...

Albert Markovski: "Yes. No. Uh, time, not space... No, I don't know what you're talking about."
