Look at that lineup ...
Let’s hope tonight is the preview of a bright, bright future! Dunn, Espinosa, Desmond and Zim in the infield, Ramos behind the plate with Maya on the Hill, and Morse and Bernardina flanking Morgan in the outfield. Morgan is the oldest guy on the starting squad!
[tries to get on board with Morse as starter]
[Boat pulls away from dock with me still standing there…]
I want the Nats to break the bank for an everyday RFer, have no problem with Morse seeing time at first and in RF, just don’t see him as an every day player….

how about instead of dumping a bunch of cash in Crawford’s lap, the Nats go after Jose Bautista and get him to play RF? That’s a lot of taters in the middle of the order if Dunn sticks around. That way, the Hammer can stay in LF, and Morgan/Bernadina can play CF. Also, Bautista could eventually slide to first base one day, assuming he could since he arleady can play the hot corner.
by Andrew Davidson on Sep 7, 2010 5:35 PM EDT up reply actions
I'm still not sure how the "Nats will get Crawford" talk started...
I know MASNBen reported that the Nats were interested, but so is just about every other team in the league, as they should be. Bautista’s ridiculous season scares me a little though, he has never put up the type of numbers he has now, but if he could keep it up. Batista and Crawford are both 29 at least, while everyone else on the market is 30+. Hope Kasten was serious recently when he predicted the Nats making a splash…

I know Bautista hasn’t put up the numbers before, but I would think he would feel nice and comfortable smashing dingers in between Zimmerman and Dunn. A lot better protection than Wells and Hill, or any other combo of the Jays best hitters. Scary yes, but potentially awesome? Heck yeah! Just, for a moment, imagine this as the 2011 Nats batting order: 1 – Morgan, 2 – Desmond, 3 – Zimmerman, 4 – Bautista, 5 – Dunn, 6 – Willingham, 7 – Espinosa, 8 – Pudge, 9 – Pitcher. Um, Wow.
by Andrew Davidson on Sep 7, 2010 5:51 PM EDT up reply actions
No Bautista here ...
As I noted below, his season just screams “Brady Anderson” to me. He has never hit more than 16 HRs and never had an OPS above .757 in a season before, and now we’re going to sign him to a multiyear contract and bat him 4th? How about this instead:
1. Crawford; 2. Desmond; 3. Zim; 4. Dunn; 5. Willingham; 6. Bernadina; 7. Espinosa; 8. Ramos/Pudge; 9. Pitcher.
THAT lineup can play for my team any day. And it can play defense, too!
well, Crawford’s career OPS is .779 and the team is going to give him nearly $20 million per? Bautista would be more like $8-9 million per.
I don’t hate the lineup, I just hate the amount of money Crawford is going to be seeking and likely getting. Also, Bautista’s Rdrs and Rdrs/yr are very close to Crawfords, so he can play D too. Again, I wouldn’t cry if Crawford signed, but the money just seems too much.
Heck, you could bat Bautista 5th or 6th even, not necessarily 4th. Brady’s big season came at the age of 32, and Bautista is 29, so I think the similarities aren’t quite the same. Also, the 4 seasons following Anderson’s big 51 HR campaign, he managed an .832 OPS (ages 33-36). Assuming Bautista signs a 4-year deal, he’d be ages 30-33 for that contract, pretty prime years for power hitters. It’s a risk giving money to a guy coming off a career year, but I saving the extra money from Crawford’s deal could land the team an extra arm and utility player.
by Andrew Davidson on Sep 7, 2010 6:16 PM EDT up reply actions
Except Bautista will also cost a good bit of talent.
If we’re going to pay big for someone, I’d rather give up money, which the Lerners have plenty of, rather than young, cost controlled talent, which the organization needs all of to progress to a perennial contender.
Or, if one of Norris/Ramos is going to be traded, to do it for a pitcher rather than a bat.
Needs moar dingerz.
You'll notice I said "let's hope" not "This is"
I know that everyone has to (1) stay healthy; and (2) pan out for this to actually BE the preview of a bright future. I think the Nats should go all in for Crawford, but I’m not sure who else I would want them to break the bank for. Werth concerns me – likely to be expensive, limited defensively, injury prone and one wonders how much of his success is due to playing in a bandbox. Bautista’s season just screams “Brady Anderson” to me. Let’s not spend 3-4 years paying off one guy’s career year, shall we?
For the record, I’m still on the dock about Morgan and Morse. I’ve now reached the point that I think that Bernadina is going to be a solid MLB outfielder, though not a star, whose bat is more than enough for him to play CF.
The only reason Bautista’s season doesn’t scream Brady Anderson to me? Steriods are tested for now-a-days. I think Bautista could be had for half of what Crawford is asking/commanding, and Jo-Bau wouldn’t create any roster problems in terms of moving guys around in the OF. I’m not saying Crawford isn’t awesome, but he really is only a LF, and I don’t think Willingham would make a good everyday RF (despite his arm). Bautista, on the other hand, has been a fairly good RF for the Jays and also can play 3B (which leads me to believe he can one day play first base, IE, when Harper arrives).
by Andrew Davidson on Sep 7, 2010 5:58 PM EDT up reply actions
I meant "Brady Anderson" in terms of "freakish outlier of a career year" not "steroids"
I know that there are loud whispers about Anderson’s 51 HR season, but until there’s more than whispers I try to give the benefit of the doubt.
I heard an interview with Anderson on XM, and while I had previously assumed the worst...
He almost convinced me he was innocent. He had obviously taken a lot of time to collect evidence to support himself since he’s heard this ever since his big season and quick disappearance. I want to believe him…

well then, insert foot in my mouth. I take it back, if Anderson wasn’t on that list, I shouldn’t have said what I did. I thought I had read he was, and that was just foolish accusations on my part.. I think it was mostly just freakish luck and a hitters park with a short RF line
I remember that season well, most of his HR’s were line drives pulled right down the line.

well that’s no fun. maybe the Mets have a beanball planned for a certain Nats player that was hustling for a two-bagger in a blowout and don’t want their franchise player getting hit in retaliation. Or, Wright’s scared of Maya. Or, he just needs a day off.
