Game 139: I forgot my wife's lucky hat
- Rusty: Yuneski Maya (-21.3%) settles down in the last part of his outing, but gives up 4 ER in the first two innings of his 5 IP, striking out 3 and walking 2. Far better than Olsen's last start, although he seems to have broken fangraphs.
- No no-no: Willie Harris (+6.7%) breaks up a 5-inning no-hitter by cranking a solo shot to the seats above the out-of-town scoreboard, thanks largely to my noisy jinxing from the upper deck (+6.7%).
- Let Bernie hit the lefties: Ivan Rodriguez (-12.0%) blows the chance to set up a walkoff HR chance for Spinner by hitting into a game-ending GDP (-12.0%).
- Also failing to impress: Adam Dunn (-10.1%) is 0-4 with 2 LOB, while Nyjer Morgan (-9.5%) is 0-4 and needs to take more pitches.
- Promising: Ross Detwiler (+4.2%) and Collin Balester (+2.8%) dominate in relief, each throwing 2 scoreless with 2 and 3 Ks, respectively, and no walks.

At least a set-up role. Bally, Clipp, Burnett and Storen sounds pretty nasty to me...

Assuming both of you (Doghouse/Dave) were there...how was crowd? Anyone even aware of Maya's background?
Was surprised his debut wasn’t more of a story nationally…

Light crowd.
No sign anyone had any idea what was up with Maya.

announced at 18 plus, but i bet it was more like 13,000
very quiet. i’m sure a handful of the regulars knew what was up with Maya. the crew right behind Nats dugout stood and clapped when he got the bunt down.

I was there. Crowd was light and listless.
Mets fans can’t get excited because they know their team is a national joke. Casual Nats fans can’t get excited because we fell behind early and never really competed.
Not too many people knew about Maya. A few in the grandstand probably knew about him, but outside of the folks who are regularly keeping score and some other regulars not too many I imagine.
“Let Bernie hit the lefties” is actually incorrect. The platoon pinch hit at bat was Gonzalez for Bernie. Bernie hadn’t had a good game at the plate and Gonzalez did deliver a late inning hit. Can’t blame Riggleman but so much for that one. Pudge was a straight pinch hit for the pitcher’s spot. Not totally sure what the bench was at that point. Nieves, Kennedy and…..? Kennedy is probably a better option than Pudge there because all we’re looking for is a quality at bat that keeps us out of the double play so Spinner has a chance to tie with a HR or keep the inning going by putting the tieing run on base.
I mean we can break this game down all we want. To me, Gee got a bit lucky and Morgan played a not too smart game as a leadoff hitter against a rookie pitcher in the big leagues. He didn’t work him hard in his first at bat. Desmond swung early and hit the ball with doubles power at the centerfielder. Zimmerman gets out. Gee gets a big lead to work with and then it’s off to the races in a relatively stressless start against some aggressive and unlucky hitters.
Wilson Ramos gets all the credit in the world for working a walk in his first at bat. Spinner worked a walk, played great defense, and hit a shot at the third basemen that was really good contact. It was the veterans and the luck that let us down offensively and the growing pains that let us down with the pitching.
Enjoy your day Mets fans and dream of your Santana, Pelfrey, Niese, Dickey, Gee rotation for next year.

Yeah, I realized that after I'd posted.
But my larger point was, “please stop hitting into DPs in big situations, Pudge.” I was really crossing my fingers for the adjustment he’d been talking about from the Pirates series to stay inside the ball. Good to see Gonzo keep coming through off the bench.

sweetpearacer and I were there too. Sitting by the Nats pen.
When Pudge was announced, we looked at each other and facepalmed.
To me, Gee managed to find the “WHEE FIRST MLB GAME” high, while Maya had nerves early. I think it would have been more salvageable if we’d gotten at least 1 run in the bottom of the 1st, but…(shrug).
P.S. Batista was pissed after the game about his lack of recent playing time. Just sat there with this really peeved look until Robledo (the bullpen catcher) talked him inside. IMO he should have been warming in the second, though once Maya settled down not putting him in was fine.

See, now that's just greedy.
I was figuring Pudge would drive in one, and Spinner would get a 3-run HR for the walkoff…

Amen.
Pudge batting late in a game in a double play situation is a recipe for failure. Don’t know what other options we had given a relatively empty bench and a lack of offensive callups from Syracuse or elsewhere with the expanded rosters.

I would have batted Marquis or Stammen.
Or (god help us) Nieves. Because I think Nieves would have hit a non-DP runner-advancing out.
