Several armed men reportedly took Ramos from his home in Venezuela last night. No contact has been made with the kidnappers thus far, though the car used in the abduction was found earlier this afternoon about an hour away from Ramos' home. • From the AP/NewsInc.com:
"Nationals Catcher Ramos Kidnapped in Venezuela:
"Officials said Thursday they have found the vehicle used by armed men who abducted Washington Nationals catcher Wilson Ramos, a case that highlights a sharp rise in kidnappings for ransom in Venezuela. (Nov. 10)"

Something about this makes me wonder if the National were contacted with the demands
Nationals instructed to say nothing, family hasnt heard anything, but the police can confirm hes alive. If thats true that means someone has to have been contacted, and the way the nats used the word instructed, as if by a lawer, makes me wonder if it was them
MOAR SEVERINO!
I was thining the same thing...
How else would they be able to confirm that Ramos was alive? Also, the Nationals have far more money than the family of a rookie catcher making the league minimum…
The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant compared to the power of the Morse

This is also posible
That his family has been contacted, and instructed not to tell the Police. saw that in the comments somewhere

I swear to god I am going to send a letter to ESPN
I know it wont do anything, but this is F’n BS, for every 10 seconds of Ramos coverage, their is 10 hours of Penn State coverage. Im sorry, but PennState is nothing compared to a MLB player being kidnapped at gunpoint, and should at least be mentioned between replaying the same paterno S***. They call them selfs the wordwide leader in sports, F’n BS right there, and 100+ people on twitter agree with me, so I know im not alone
MOAR SEVERINO!
Lot of Twitter anger directed their way last night and this morning...
Not sure why they haven’t been covering the story. It is on the front page of ESPN.com of course, and there’s a video update, but the coverage on Sportscenter, etc. is apparently lacking.

100+?
Wilson Ramos is still a trending topic on twitter in the US, and has been since last night. That other affair was history as of this morning in terms of burning interest, however momentous it was in terms of the future of a college sports program.

Hey @SportsCenter I know the #JoPa story is a big deal, but give a little attention to Wilson Ramos, MLB catcher kidnapped from his home!

Im sorry, but a players life is a bigger story than sports center is making it, I know the whole 98% thing, and their is nothing new, but their is nothing new with PennState, and a players life should at least compare to CFB IMO

A kidnapping expert chimes in
Are the Venezuelan authorities up to the task of finding him?
No. Kidnapping is a problem most effectively dealt with by civilian law enforcement—the police. But Chávez [Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez] has done everything he can to give control to the military to weaken the police. The military does not have the method of operation or training to deal with a kidnapping …
Do you think Ramos’s life is at risk?
If this is a ransom kidnapping, then the risk of harm is low.
Trust me if Derek Jeter was the one kidnapped
It would destroy news coverage like none other , pattern would be an afterthought
I was semi-intrigued
until Brisbee brought up he could be the next Kaz Matsui… His last two years are not particularly reassuring.

As several writers have noted, it's now been 24 hours since Ramos was abducted.
Still no official word from the kidnappers.

Post has been updated (at bottom) w/ translation of the report from El Universal and the details of Ramos’ abduction: wtim.es/s99qCO
New details emerging from the Venezuelan publication El Universal from the actual abduction. According to the report Ramos was signing an autograph in the street near his house moments before the kidnapping when two trucks passed close by him, his father Abraham, brother David and a cousin. Realizing that they were in danger, the party retreated down the street into Ramos’ house.
The report then says that moments later, at around 7:15 p.m. local time, the kidnappers “burst into the place. This time, two men with their faced uncovered got out of a Chevrolet Captiva 2007, orange. They hanged the player with his arm (loosely translated I believe that means a headlock) and placed a Glock pistol 9mm in his head.”
This looks to be HUGE in Venezuela

Looks like the front page of their newspaper will have something about asking for Ramos to be set free

Students hold a vigil for the freedom of Wilson Ramos
by Adriana Chirinos Castro
At 6:30pm students of José Antonio Páez University (UJAP) held a vigil outside José Bernardo Pérez de Valencia Stadium, where they called for the liberation of Venezuelan major-leaguer Wilson Ramos.
Benicio Tosar, a student leader at UJAP, demanded that president Hugo Chávez and Interior and Justice Minister Tarek El Asissami pursue investigation as soon as possible in order to locate Ramos.
…
[Tosar] asked Ramos’ captors to release him. Tosar said that situations like this cause major league teams with Venezuelan players to be skeptical of letting them return home to play in the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League. “He’s a young man who came up from the bottom and fought to get what he has.” The candlelight vigil also features banners with slogans like “Free Wilson” and “No more kidnapping. No more insecurity.” In light of the kidnapping, the student leader said that the upcoming Caracas-Magallanes game on Sunday will have considerable significance and invited all baseball fans to join.
(translation mine. cut out one sentence that had to do with Venezuelan politics and legislation that I don’t know the full context for)
Thank you very much for posting this, and the translation
It is much appreciated.

Just pay it!
I will donate as much money as I can if needed, and I’m Shure the Venezuelan and MLB communities could get the money easily if needed. No reason not to pay it

I could use my Han-Chewbacca quote
but it seems flippant. I can unfortunately see the authorities taking the stance that paying a seven-figure ransom will “just encourage others to do the same”. Maybe that’s the influence of too many bad cop shows and movies, but …
Free Wilson. Now. Please.
Brain: "Pinky, are you pondering what i'm pondering?"
Pinky: "Yes, ... wait, ... no, ... never mind"
It's always easy to take that stance when it's not someone you know
Or someone that you root for. Free Wilson +n
I Dont know
this seems to be a HUGE story in Venezuela, and their country would look even more terrible if they didnt pay the randsom
